For some reason, so many of us keep thinking our years in the frame as somewhere in the 2000s. Where "10 years ago" keep meaning somewhere in the 90s, "20 years ago" is the 80s, and numbers like 2025 (or 2027) feels like the "distant future but in our lifetimes". Tourism will never be big anywhere in PNG. The costs of airfares, accommodation, lack of safe public transportation and suitable hospitals. I am looking at going to Bougainville when they offer a specials fare again. Last time it was about K1000 return (US$287.83 ) from here the last ones sold out in under 5 minutes while I was asking my boss for time off. I did Manus return for K 354 return instead. Tuesday special fares. Usually sold out as soon as released. Accommodation in a 2 to 3 star hotel is about US$100 a night, local transport is interesting to say the least. At least I have Bougainvilleian friends not only there but here that I can plan with.

New Caledonia votes on Independence this year, and it's going to be tight, but they'll likely become a new country before Bougainville. So start saving, because you'll need a new map before 2027.. Chuukese also votes for independence from Micronesia, but even if that's agreed it might not go well.

The mine hasn't operated for 30 years. It is going to take some work to get it up and running again. There are also legal issues around ownership as Bougainville Copper is a PNG subsidiary of Rio Tinto but with PNG government owning 20%. Just some of the wrangling that needs a bit of time to sort out before independence.
