We bought a 1951 Chevrolet 3 window 3600. Same body style as our 1949 5 window 3100. But this one will be a 2wd pulling truck.

I was born 21 Dec 51, I grew up with these trucks, and 50's vehicles of all kinds, it was a magic time to be alive, it's good that you could save that truck...

I would have thought it was originally a 3/4 ton flat bed but not 💯 percent sure. Nice buy👍

I had a one-ton cab (3800) with the short running boards a few years ago. Used it on a 1/2 ton frame and built a street rod out of it. Most 3800 cabs were purchased from the factory as cab-and-chassis assemblies, and then the buyer installed their own grain box, service box, flatbed, etc, themselves or had a dealer do it. I think they all came with the short running boards with the factory rear lip. The cabs, grilles, and hoods were all interchangeable (3100, 3600, 3800), but the larger trucks used wider front fenders from the factory to accommodate bigger front tires. I've had many 1947-53 Chevy trucks over the years and this is what I have learned. There are probably exceptions to all these different options. Your "new" maroon truck was probably originally built as a grain truck, which would also explain the nice rust-free floors and cab corners. They were usually only driven a few times per year to and from the field, and not driven on salty roads in the wintertime.

15 inch wheels or 17inch. 15 inch will be a 3600 3/4 ton. 17 inch wheels will be a 3800 1ton. Plus the one ton usually has a one ft extension on the rear of the frame.

3600 is 3/4 ton. Looking at the length of the bed (of course it could be the camera angle), I think you have a 3800 which is a one ton. You can tell for sure by actually measuring the bed length. If it is the one ton, it will be nine foot long. If it's shorter, then it'll be the 3600 or 3/4 ton. A 292 Chevy inline six cylinder will out pull any small block especially if you build it right, mainly because it has more torque. You will just have to change the cross member for the rear engine mount to make it work right, but then you would have to for the small block anyway. The doors are wrong for a 1951. The 51 is the only year with both wing glasses and turn down door handles. So unless someone changed out the doors, it's either a 49 or 50. Of course the year won't really matter for what you're planning. If you do decide to go with a 292, make really strong front motor mounts because the high torque will break them otherwise. However you decide to build it, it's gonna be awesome, and I'm looking forward to seeing the final results. A Jim Carter truck parts catalogue is a good source of information on these old Chevy trucks. Also, they're a good source of parts.

The truck doesn't appear to be a 1951. 51 would have have wing windows. If you need any parts give me a shout, I have a salvage yard in Independence and I specialize in these trucks. Also don't scrap the stock parts your not going to use, there's prob some guys that are looking for some of those pieces.

I didn’t realize that was you in the 49, I don’t go to Boonville much anymore..I’d sure love to have a late 40s-54 Chevrolet 1/2 ton!

Love your videos, I have had my 51 3/4 - 5 window for 50 years now. My cab does not have the air vent by the drivers door. Just curious.
