My Dad grew up in Altoona, PA just up from the 24th St. bridge and showed me pics of what his house looked like before diesels. Can’t imagine how black the ground was after a decent rain back in those days or how he didn’t get lung cancer as he’s 86 years old.

Hi JT At 7 mile Ohio the 2nd train, the DPU no.4654 🚂 looked brand new ,like it had just left the factory 🏭 paintwork shining with no dust or dirt on it at all. Underneath the bouncy bridge reminds me of the film ,The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, when the freight train derails and Harrison Ford's character, Dr Kimble flees from the wreckage careering towards him and hides under a bridge. Take care

Love the bouncy bridge update with the hoofin' action. That was one spiffy looking DPU, like it came right off the cleaning rack. The scene from Cass reminded me of my first time solo firing J. Neils Lumber Company Shay #5 back in '75 at IRM. It was the start of a busy Saturday pulling the caboose train and I had just put 30 lbs. of grease down the lenngth of the driveshaft. As we pulled off the coaling lead I set the lubricator to maximum and my engineer had the cylinder cocks open to prevent.hydo locking. Just then a gorgeous lady dressed in an 1800s long white dress and hat proceeds to set up a wooden glass plate camera. My engineer stopped and asked me to tell the lady that it might not be good to stand there when we went by and maybe she should shoot one of the later runs. I hopped down from the cab and mentioned to the lady that I had just lubed up the locomotive and told her what my engineer said. She accused me of thinking she was a bad photographer because she was a woman and that she knew exactly where and when she wanted to be and to stop bothering her or she would turn me in to the management. I started to protest and she started yelling at me. I walked back to the locomotive and told my engineer what happened and he just said " She's the boss!". So with the throttle and lubricator wide open we went by her in a cloud of steam, coal smoke, oil and grease at the blistering speed of 10 mph. I looked back out of the engineer side door to see what looked like a soaking wet Dalmation and man was she P.O.ed! She did turn us in to the board of directors but the President just told us to forget about it. Thanks for bringing back a great memory JT!

Well I guess the bouncy bridge can now be called the solid span is it no longer has that squeaky or clicky sound to it. That first train at 7 Mile was more of a Blow by than a run by. It was worthy of note in the consist were two Conrail Autoracks side by side and a bit later an AMGX drawbar connected set of old Detroit Edison aluminum cool cars. That flat side auto rack was like a movie marquee for that movie Lost In Space coming soon will a passing siding near you. Hopefully this oppressive Heat eases up in the next few days.

Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for taking us back to the former bouncy bridge in Somerville, Ohio and to 7 Mile, Ohio for some railfanning on 18 June 2024. It has been a while since we were at either of these locations. The second train over the bridge was going at track speed. You had a lot of railfan action in 7 Mile, Ohio with the four trains that passed. Is that grain elevator complex a functioning business or is it closed? The five Shay locomotives at the Cass Scenic Railroad were creating voluminous clouds of smoke. How to they manage to create all that smoke? (23 June 2024 at 2125 CDT)

There is still some bounce in that bridge. During the auto racks on the 2nd train, from other side bridge, the lighting was better and it can be seen the ties in the foreground are bouncing maybe 1 inch or so. ALSO if you set the playback speed to .25 the bounce can be seen better. If you then pause it, you can see the springs on many, but not all, those auto racks are compressed! so some are full of heavy new vehicles. Most of the springs we paused to look at for the 1st train where NOT compressed. Keep up the great vids!
