People don’t realize the effect that a good, caring teacher has on students. Even years after school, I still remember each and every teacher who was caring and supportive. I never had a father so the teachers honestly at times filled that role.

I'm still in contact with my 7th grade English teacher 30+ years later. He definitely took on the role of father (second, surrogate and otherwise) to many of his students. I now run a daycare from my home but early in my career I taught then subbed at a middle school I once attended in my pre-teen years. While subbing, I stood up to one of the biggest baddest rudest students that even the principal didn’t bother. This was a 6’1” 300lb full facial hair 13 yr old boy while I was 5’6” 110lb 27yr old woman. He was very disrespectful to the lunch ladies so I jumped up to defend her and had this boy standing chest to chest to me glaring down on me while my colleagues told me to back off. After 5 minutes of dead silence from the entire lunchroom to see who would break first, he simply smiled and said “I like u. Yes ma’am, I’ll apologize and clean my own mess up.” 17 yrs later … he still gives me the biggest smile followed by a hug and asks how I’m doing and if I need anything. No lie … I peed myself a little that day. And while my story isn’t on this story’s level, I saw a big bully w a bigger heart. Teaching is a tough job. And it takes a special kinda person to take that job on. I love it but I prefer teaching toddlers at my age 😅😅😅

I'm a school bus driver and stopped my bus in the middle of traffic--no hazards on when a 6'3" 250-300lbs 16 year old boy thought he could taunt, disrespect, and threaten me by trying to run up on me while I was driving and telling them to sit down. His friend jumped in front of him to stop him advancing. When I shot up out my seat I told him " You met the right one today buddy, I don't get paid enough to be threatened and I WILL give you the beating your mother's afraid to give you, take the charge, and get off and out of jail before the weekend is over and have a new job by Monday." Everyone went silent, even he was stunned for a moment and sat down lol. Drove everyone back to school and had the principal escort him right off the bus for good. You cannot let these kids think they can treat you any kind of way and get away with it. I'm glad that student respected you and backed down when he realized you were not taking his BS. You ironed him out and he respected you forever for it.

I already knew my limitations was going to land me in jail if one of those kids put their hands on me….. but also, I relate deeply to this story because I’ve seen many teachers try very hard to build a connection with trouble children. They would do anything to help that child only for the parents and the child to turn on them. This is a truly heartbreaking story. I’m now a therapist for children with autism, I just couldn’t do the school system anymore. As always, you are doing an amazing job by putting out the victims story so that we can hear their voices. You should never trust anyone in your personal space no matter how in need or helpless they seem. Some folks are under privileged but unfortunately the ones who try to help them are the ones who may suffer most. You ever see people make it out the hood and they are accused of never looking back? Unfortunately it’s because of circumstances like this. The same ones you feel bad for and try to pull up the ladder can be the same ones to pull you down because all they see you as is an opportunity. You wanna help someone underprivileged, you do so with caution from a distance to protect yourself. He should’ve left his help at school trips and pizza parties like most teachers do. I’ve had some an amazing teachers who cared a great deal about us but they didn’t let their help go any farther than teaching us that education was the key to making it in life , no invites to their house none of that. They know the reality some people are coming from a deeply broken environment and you don’t wanna get yourself too expose to that.

My brother in law is a math professor at a high school. Has been for double digit years. He’s incredibly special, the way Mr. Levin was. He slides into his kids souls and meets them right where he knows they need him to. He’s also extremely musically talented and has a flow that most who look at him would never expect. He still hears from students who have long been gone from those high school hallways, always being reminded of just how special he is and was to them. He’s humble and quiet too. Bless up to Mr. Levin. Taken way too soon but certainly left a legacy of an imprint on those who were lucky enough to have known him.

This is such a heartbreaking end for such a caring teacher who was doing all the right things in his life. The worst thing is that it was his good heart that the killers used to target him.Thank you for covering this with such dignity and kindness for the victim and his family.Too much attention is often given to the perpetrator on ither channels. My heart goes out to his family and his students.May he rest in peace.

Unfortunately I remember this horrific story because my cousin attended Taft high school and he was one of Mr. Levin's students during those years. This teacher was supportive, dedicated and devoted to his students! These students loved and respected Mr. Levin. They were encouraged and inspired to reach for the stars because of his influence. I remember seeing so many of them crying on the streets and in front of the school. They were upset and angry over the tragic murder of their beloved teacher. One of his students, punched a building, and broke his hand. He was crying so hard! Mr. Levin truly cared about his students. I am so sorry about what happened to you Mr. Levin! RIP. Your beloved students, including my cousin went on to do great things in life because of your example, your dedication and your devotion to them. You did not die in vain.

R.I.P. to Mr. Levins because he seems like a good man that cared about his students and his career. I am glad that he made an impact in New York City because there are some rough schools there. I should know because i am from New York City. However, he made a mistake about giving out information that he should keep to himself. This was a great case. 😢😢😢😢

I went to public schools all of my life and was taught mostly by Jewish teachers. Some of the best teachers I've ever had. Many of them came from well off families but yet chose to teach in some of the poorest communities because that was where they felt they were needed.

I just wanted to point out that Jonathan has kind eyes; what really aggravates me is that he seems like the type of guy that would've given Corey the money if he asked for it and told him to keep it. You killed a man with a heart of gold just to get $800 a day for a few days. The students that needed to be hospitalized probably lost the only stable support system they could rely on, my heart breaks for them. Imagine the impact he would've had had he been able to live to retire. I really don't understand this world we live in.

Once again, another excellent piece of work. Good stuff Jose. Another story that hits close to home. Taft was my zone HS and I graduated grade school as this happened in 1997. I remember being absolutely terrified to go to Taft. My Mom would actually use this school as a scare tactic for me to get better grades. I knew some STONE COLD KILLERS that went to Taft. Didn’t even matter if you could fight. Kids has knives and guns. And gangs was rampant. I actually almost ended up here but I got accepted into a better school. RIP to that teacher Mr Levin. Believe it or not, there was A LOT of teachers in the Bronx at that time that actually cared. Unfortunately this cost him his life. Between broken homes, deep seeded generational curses and trauma on families, Gun violence, incarcerated parents, drug addicted parents due to the crack epidemic, drug wars, alcoholism, systemic racism, a broken economy, hunger and poverty etc.. You truly had to a be special soul to even step foot in Taft as a teacher in the 90’s and early 2000’s. 🫡 This was definitely the worst school in NYC maybe even the entire USA. Prayers to his family 🙏🏾

Lived over there right on that block and when I tell you that it's very very very harsh out there... I remember trying to enroll my then 15 year old into that exact school, me being simply naive not knowing anything about it. The security guards didn't even let me in the building, one woman guard pulled me to the side and said you do not I repeat do not want your child here! That was 6 years ago . Sad that it's still the same way decades later after this incident...

I have to say thank you so much for doing this story. It took me two days to finish watching it. I couldn’t watch. Jonathan Levin was my English when I was in 1993 at Taft High School. This teacher was amazing. I appreciate you bringing this story about Mr Levin. Everything said about him was true. I remember how love and caring he was. I remember how I learned about his story. I was approximately 6 months pregnant. I was taking the train to go to college. I saw the name on the newspapers and thought to myself, “wow, how strange, that’s Mr. Levins name”. It was him. I still have all the newspaper clipping.

This is so so sad, you have a teacher who's willing to go out there way to help you, and you took his life for $800. you could have worked somewhere for 2 to 3 weeks and made that. This makes someone who wants to help, not help because they have to be concerned if you would turn on him/her. You know how hard it is to have a good teacher. That is a profession that most people would not take on. May Jonathan's soul rest in peace 😞.
