I also have a Four Wheel Camper (love it!). I installed lithium batteries and toasted the battery isolator. The battery isolater cannot handle the charge current. I replaced it with the Renogy DC DC Charger - works great! Caveats: (1) make sure the charger disconnects when the engine is off; (2) make sure your alternator can handle the current - I have a 135 amp alternator. Alternators are horribly inefficient at low ARM. The Renogy DC DC Charger will automatically limit the charge current to the charger rating, this is absolutely necessary as lithium batteries will draw way more current than just about anything else and will toast an under powered alternator (ruining your whole trip!}).
@glorifyhymn3 жыл бұрын
Consider getting the Sterling Power Battery to Battery Charger. I actually got the Sterling Power Pro Alt C alternator to battery charger for my 2006 Tundra about 4 years ago and it works great. I get 130 amps charging power to my 3 Battery Born Lithium Batteries. It's been fantastic!
@rd46604 жыл бұрын
DC to DC charging. I think you’ll find the alternator very very useful for charging if you’re stuck in a snow and/or clouds for more than three days. I have 450 watts solar on the roof but when we were in Yellowstone this winter we had zero solar gain. If we didn’t have our alternator to charge our battery bank, we’d be screwed. And no, we don’t have a generator by design.
@BoundForNowhere4 жыл бұрын
For sure! Thats exactly why we're still working towards getting that solved. We tend to be in mild weather and some how have not had an issue but if we hang out in the PNW we will certainly need to get this sorted!

Have you updated your vehicle to battery charging set-up? I have a FWC on order (Still 4 months out) and, like you said; no lithium or complex charging system in their options. There's a 160 watt solar system, but I think it's pretty expensive for only 160W. I'm thinking i should probably do like y'all did, and just take the cheapest they offer, and do the rest myself.

Can ya give some tech specs on the fold out solar panel? Are you going to get a new relay for your alternator charge even though you don't need it right now? I like the outtakes...hilarious.
@nomadchad82434 жыл бұрын
I would leave the Tundra alternator out of the mix. Even the correct setup will shorten its life and they're expensive to replace. It would be more economical to add batteries or solar.
@chazlyle414 жыл бұрын
I tend to do the same. Keeping electrical separate can be inconvenient once in a while but much more stress free in the long run. We charge a lot of electronics in the vehicle while moving and just use solar for fridge/fan pretty much.. we do tend to move a lot though. Those staying in one place may need more power if they’re gadget heavy.

Great video. I'm struggling looking for an overland vehicle to do the same type of travel as you guys. How has the Tundra been, any issues, warranty claims or repairs? Anything you would do differently with the truck as far as accessories, add ons or suspension?
@BoundForNowhere4 жыл бұрын
Honestly not a single issue or complaint for us! This truck does ANYTHING we ask it to! We love a little slower on trail because we're a little wide and tall, but otherwise this thing has been everything we'd dream it would be!
@chazlyle414 жыл бұрын
The only downsides to the Tundra are the size/weight and gas mileage. As well as a few things being hard to reach under the hood. A First Gen Tundra such as a 2006 model can be had for a decent price and has a good balance between size/mileage/load bearing capacity. Unfortunately these campers are overweight for a Tacoma once fully loaded up but that doesn’t stop many many people from using them anyway! Greater size means more space! Which is so great when you live out of your rig, just not as great for maneuvering it haha which you’ll spend a lot of time doing. I hope you find the fit that works best for you! :)

Victron now has a DC-DC Smart charger/isolator. 30 amp, bluetooth that would solve your alternator input needs for lithium. www.victronenergy.com/dc-dc-converters/orion-tr%20smart I got mine a couple of months ago and have not yet put it in my slide-in Hawk to replace the BlueSea unit. I just have AGM at this time, but like the Victron line of BT enabled devices.
