I'm just trying to choose my first wooden ship to build and the one thing that was holding me back was the thought of having to do the planking. Harry as soon as you began to measure that was a lightbulb moment for me, thank you so much for this video it's now so clear and simple. This is without doubt the best modelling lesson I have had

Thank you so much. I really wanted to find a simple and intuitive way to describe the process of planking, without sending the viewer to sleep. Hopefully I managed that.

Thank you thank you thank you. Finally someone that actually takes the time to really explain the process and the math behind it. Especially on how and why the hull is separated into 3 segments. I’ve had a kit I’ve put off for a couple of months and now I’m excited to get back to it after this video has just been that spark that goes “ohhhhhhh! I get it now!” Thanks again!

Harry, very clear and a good method for those of us that do not get on with numbers. I have a job to do mental arithmetic while doing something else so now use Alexa as my calculator. It enables me to concentrate on, literally, the job-in-hand and keeps them free at the same time. Keep safe from Oxford, England.

Hi Harry Greetings from the UK I love your videos and at 82 years old I am on my third wooden sailing ship.the Occre La Candelaria After two catastrophic disasters I have managed to fully lay my first set of planks on my third model thanks to your videos.I am about to start my second layer and Occre are suggesting using contact adhesive I hate the bloody stuff can you recommend anything more suitable? Many thanks Roy

Thank you Roy.. I swear by Selleys Aquadhere PVA white wood glue, although most good quality hobby wood glues should work. This bottle should last you 2 or 3 wood model builds. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264788801260

what would really like to know is how do you hold the second level of planks while the glue is drying without putting holes in the nice planks thanks@@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels11 ай бұрын
Hi Roy… The second layer should be of very thin planks about 0.5mm so they only require a little soak in warm water, wipe dry, then use PVA white wood glue and a plank bending tool. This tool is a soldering iron with a big round end on it. With your plank a little damp, and just touch glued approximately into place, I use the soldering iron tool to gently heat press them to position and the shape of the first layer. Don’t over do this or you burn the planks. The heat sets the PVA white wood glue and irons out the planks firmly in the bend and twist you need. They should then be stuck fast and formed to your hull shape. If they won’t bend enough you need to either add a taper or a joggle/steeler plank. I have shown this technique in one of my other planking videos.
@HarryHoudiniModels11 ай бұрын
You can also add drawing pins just outside your plank, so they only make a tiny hole in the first layer, not the second layer plank. These will hold the plank in place until you can use the soldering iron plank blender for stubborn curves or twists.

Brilliant! Very cogent explanation, although I think the Bounty hull shape adds to the simplicity. I would be interested to see how this would apply to a more complex hull where the number of planks in a strake varies from the other strakes & the end of the planks would mean cutting the ends by more than 50% (I guess this is where stealers come into play). Still, I enjoyed this very much!!!💯

Fun fact most people know about Bligh and the Bounty mutiny fewer people know about the rum rebellion but not many know about the third mutiny bligh was involved in the fleet mutiny at Nore another fact about Bligh is he wasnt the monster Hollywood made him out to be if anything he was lenient on his crew compared to the average captain of the time

Thank you. Very good and certainly has helped me. Just finished my first layer and it’s dreadful. My problem is that when I divide the bow and stern ends by the 15 planks I need at mid bulk head, it comes to way less than half a plank width to fill in the gaps. So I don’t know what to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve currently got the last few planks only glued to two bulk heads which I know is not right. 😢
@HarryHoudiniModels11 ай бұрын
In my earlier videos I show how to chock the bow and stern with balsa blocks. This solves the problem of planks hanging in mid air and gives them a shape to form around where the bends are more obtuse. Not sure how you would add those blocks after started planking, but if you can squeeze them in, it helps support the tapers. Also look at my video on Joggle and Steelers. This method avoids going too thin on tapers by turning a 3 plank run into a 2 plank run. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6CYp6ScoN-AbrM

Can I use a wood glue for the 2nd planking? Thanks
@HarryHoudiniModels6 ай бұрын
I use PVA white wood glue for all my planking. Did I forget to show that? I don’t like to use superglue with wood. May stick today but has a habit of shearing then snapping off in the future. Contact adhesive can be used but doesn’t have the same flexibility as white wood glue. So if you make a mistake it is very hard to correct it.

All depends on where you and what you can get… I use Selleys Aquadhere. It dries quick enough to get tacky and hold in just a minute or two, then sets firm overnight. Dries clear and sands easily.
