Hi Kevin, I'm glad you have found the videos useful, Its a great hobby to get into, relaxing, with a great sense of achievement when you complete things. Couple of tips, dont rush to complete things, if your struggling to do something stop, dont be afraid to ask others, there are a number of great forums, and content creators on youtube who are always willing to offer help and advice, lastly dont be afraid to change things, kit instructions are a guide, not always accurate, main thing is to have fun.

@g-kip I have seen the method you are using before and it certainly does appear to be a better way.i never show the front of the Soleil because each side is not a mirror of the other.This is something that annoys me. Next ship will be planked the way you are doing it.

Great video! On bending the plank with heat, what if you make too tight of a curve? Can that be addressed or tossed? Thanks.

Hi, straight after heating and bending the plank, the plank remains reasonable plyable for a while, if its a minor over bending you can usually correct it when placing the plank, you can reverse the plank and attempt to reshape, but care would need to be taken, slowely and not applying too much pressure, I will try and demonstrate in my next video if i have time.

Great couple of videos. This has answered some questions I've had about this technique. What are the chances you could add a third video demonstrating stealers and drop planks? I haven't been able to find anything that adequately explains/demonstrates how these are determined and implemented.

Hi Mark, thanks, I will be doing some planking soon on the Santisma Trinidad, there was no need for stealers or drop planks on the model in the videos, rule of thumb if your plank would be less than half its width, you would use a stealer or drop plank, hopefully i will be able to show this on the current model.

I would love to see a continuation of this planking. I'll be keeping an eye on your channel for more videos. I'm 2/3rds of the way done with my 1st ship so am new to the hobby. Do you have a video where you explain the reason for (and how to place) the strips of wood that jut out from under the deck at the beginning of Part 1? The strips that you butt the top edge of the first plank onto, that is. So kind of you to make these videos. Thank you.

Hi Dakota, I will shortly be planking the hull of the Santisima Trinidad, with regards the pieces of wood jutting out below the deck of the Marie Jeanne, the model instructions specified that the bottom of first plank be level with the bottom of the deck, I used them purely as a guide, to make placement of the plank easier. (cheating), with regards planking the position of the first plank is dependant upon the kit and style of the ship, generally kit instructions are ok for the first step, general rule if the plank sits naturally ie not needing to be forced into position, and looks to be running the correct line of the hull you should be ok. Where kit instructions tend to be wrong is the lower half of the hull, with funny shaping ie triangular shaped wedges at both stern and bow, thin slivers of wood to fill in gaps etc this would never have been the case, a hull plank should never be cut more than half its width. if you measure and mark out the hull and taper the planks where needed this shouldn't happen, hope this helps.

I'd really like to focus on first planking next build and have purchased a beginners kit (occre albatros) to practice. My first planking on current build is a mess and has funny shaped pieces everywhere. Same with the 2nd planking. Your method looks like one I'll feel confident adopting. Hi Dakota, no worries, its a great idea to start with a smaller beginner ship, so many people jump straight into the advanced kits and never complete them (myself included, I started with HMS Victory, some ten years ago, made such a mess of it and wasted £100's of pounds, I never touched another kit for about 5 years). Im always happy to answer (to best of my ability), or point you in the right direction if you have any questions or queries, so dont worry its no bother.

Thank you so much for these two videos, they have helped a lot. One question I have is why the plank you lay in this video only goes up to the 5th rib? is this because it is the halfway point of all measured ribs or something more particular?

Hi, im glad the videos were helpful, with regards planking to the 5th rib, this was advised in the kit instructions, also the length of the planks were not long enough to complete the full length of the hull, though technically dependant upon the length of the hull a 3 or 4 shift pattern for the planking would have been used.

Great tutorial thank you as i am about to start my first ship. A continuation of the planking would be great to see. Hwo did you decide to run that plank only to the 5th rib? I thought you would of cut the length half way through the rib to allow the second something to purchase. Would appreciate to understand the thought process behind.

Hi Gareth, the 5th rib was determined by the kit instructions, I will soon be planking the hull on the Santisima Trinidad, I will film the whole process. What ship are you starting with?

@g-kip thanks for the reply I will look out for that video. I was given a 1:96 HMS Peregrine by a family member, bit bigger than I would of liked to start with, but they knew I built other models, and they were not up to completing it. They have just built the Hull structure, so I am currently fixing some mistakes and prepping for the decking and planking.

Its a nice ship, if your doing the Coral kit, its a double planked hull, so the first planking is a bit more forgiving, as you can use filler to fix any issues, as long as you fix the imperfections in the hull, the second planking is easier, with the planking you shouldn't have any real issues or need to do any marking out until you reach the black planking level (about half way down).

@g-kip thanks for the advice, its definitely going to be a baptism of fire, but I have no timeframe and I am planning on just taking my time. Think I might document it as a beginner experience and lessons learnt for people coming along behind me. Plan for tonight is just to organise the wood as the instructions are not in English and I get goggle translate to work out types lol

Hi! Why goes the plank only to rib five? With this method could it go the whole length, couldn‘t it? I am a newbie, building right now my first ship. I am planing to make use of stealers and drppers. Btw I am filling the spaces between the ribs with wood. Cheers!

Hi Robert, the supplied timber for the planks isn't long enough to do the complete length, so the shorter plank alternates from bow to rib 5 and then rib 9 to the stern. If the planks were long enough this method could be used, the main thing if you measure and mark up the Hull, you will see in advance where you will need to use steelers etc,

@@g-kip Hi, that was quick! Thank you! My planks are long enough, no problems there. I studied books on historical ships and found out, that shipwrights of old did put their planks together. No trees high enough presumably. But they did it to a regular muster. I am not tryingto do that - it would be extaordinarily time consuming…. My first one will be with stealers and droppers, so as to have some progress :-) Afterwards maybe I try my hand at tapering of the planks. I am afraid it will be time consuming too. I shall see. Thanks again for your video - not too quick, so one can follow the steps and listen to your comments and explanation.

Hi Robert, you will also find if following shipwrights methods, curved planks would have been cut to shape from larger pieces of timber, not something that can be replicated with a kit, unless you replace the timber

Hi, its the hardest part of the construction, but it gets easier with practice, despite it looking like hard work it is fairely relaxing lol (when its going right)
