You always want friction to be applied to the very bottom of a divot from a relatively flat tipped spindle against a correspondingly shaped divot bottom. Any time you engage the sidewalls, in any way, you are wasting your energy. Why do we want the very bottom of the spindle tip to get the hottest? Because the ignition won't come until the dust pile builds high enough to touch the bottom of the spindle. Let me show you the best way to modify a pointy spindle. What is the metal you use on top of your work table? Thanks!

Hello Mr West- thanks for the tips and I have a bearing block similar to yours of fatwood, however mine does not look as cool as yours does. Thanks again- You and Mrs West be good-

You can Google David West bearing block (or any topic) and my videos on that topic will come up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH-VhqiqqMqglbc

A possible cause of pointy spindle: The wedge extended into the divot a little beyond the centre. Possibly, a slight difference in hardness in the fireboard caused the spindle to inch toward the edge of the board. This, in turn, caused the divot to be a little closer to the edge of the fireboard and the wedge to extend beyond the middle of the divot.

I'm glad I get to talk to someone about this. I thought the same thing when I saw that good close up of the used fire board. I saw that the notches in both divots extended way beyond the center of the divot and were much wider than they should have been. I didn't remember being that careless when I cut them out, though. I watched again and noticed that the initial notches were indeed made perfectly... It was the spindle drifting! It drifted so far forward, towards the divot, that it became pointy and then left the notches looking like they had been overcut from the beginning. LOL! The next notches will be square point and only enter the divot about half as far.

Love the vids. Thanks for the info, but I was wondering do you think you could do a a fire roll with sand and coconut husks
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Жыл бұрын
Fire roll ignition doesn't work by friction alone there's a chemical reaction also. Coconut husks work without filler material.

You are presenting great information. You have such an extensive amount of experience, when and where will I be able to buy your book?

Lol. Never.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl You really should think about it. Using different chapters for different techniques: bow drill, solar, flint & steel.....and add some apocopate pictures captured from your videos.. A lot of the dialogue could also come from your videos; use a voce to type program, like LILY SPEECH, to reduce the amount of actual typing. It would be lots of work, but could keep the boredom away on those days you aren't able to engage in real fire starting.

I haven't had a chance to go through all of your very interesting videos but I was just wondering did you ever do a video on a fire piston. They have always intrigued me and I ordered one from Amazon a model SXTL for $19.99. it's a beautiful kit that comes in a metal tin and a supppy of char cloth, tinder and of course the fire piston itself but I can't seem to get an ember. Many videos on KZbin show people getting an ember with no trouble but as of yet, nothing for me. I would love to see a video on this.

I’m the opposite. It doesn’t interest me at all. But, I’m in the minority as many have asked me to do a FP video over the years years. I’d like to try one, but then I’d lay it down and never use it again. Thanks for the info.

What type of wood are you using on this set?

The 2x6 lumber used nowadays can come from 6 different varieties from around the world. This species turned out to be better than the lumber I’ve used in the past.
