Bowden Cables For Robotics

In this video, we discuss how Bowden cables work, where you can find them, and how they can be incorporated into robot and animatronic projects. We also discuss my recent experiments with Bowden cables, the problems I faced, the problems that I still face, and the discoveries I made along the way.

Awesome video these cables are used in so many places everything from household appliances and uPVC door frames to cars and aeroplanes! My first encounter with these was when I was a child and used in my nitro fuel aircraft 4 control surface movement! It's a shame they lost popularity when small solenoids and servos became incredibly cheap

I ordered the tubes and cables on Amazon.

A problem that arises when using monofilament is flexibility... It stetches and thus tranfers less power to and from the points intended. This is amplified when the entire assembly rounds bends/corners be cause of leverage and friction within the tube... Stiffer cable used in the tube is a better option. However, then fasteners become necessary as using knots becomes problematic.

I definitely noticed this and ended up using stuffer fishing line on other projects where I used this technique.
