==========
In this Bowflex SelectTech 552 vs PowerBlock EXP review, I break down the features and differences between the two dumbbells to see which one wins the title of best adjustable dumbbell.
==========
Build Quality & Durability
==========
The PowerBlock EXP is made of solid steel.
The Bowflex 552 is made of heavy duty plastic.
Because the Bowflex has more moving parts and they’re plastic, I believe the PowerBlock (which are made of iron) is more durable than the Bowflex.
If I accidentally drop one of these weights, I believe the metal would be stronger than the plastic
=====================
Mechanism of Adjustment
=====================
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 uses a dial turning system which makes it fairly quick to change, however, the dumbbell must be on the base to change weight.
The Powerblock EXP uses a magnetic pin system. You stick the pin under the weight you want to pick up and you're good to go.
When it comes to changing weight in 2.5 lbs increments, the Bowflex is faster.
The PowerBlock EXP takes a bit longer due to the adder weights (2.5 lbs weights) being inside the dumbbells but honestly I don’t even mess with the adder weights.
===========
Dumbbell Size
===========
The Bowflex 552 has a constant length whether you pick up 5 lbs or 52 pounds.
The length may interfere in some exercises such as bench press, curls hitting thighs, and overhead shoulder presses.
This may limit the range of motion in exercises.
The PowerBlock EXP allows you to pick up only the weight you select.
This allows the dumbbell to be smaller with lighter weights which allows for better ROM during certain exercises.
========
Warranty
========
The Bowflex 552 dumbbell comes with a 2 year warranty.
The PowerBlock EXP comes with a 5 year warranty.
===========
Expandability
===========
The Powerblock EXP gives you the ability to expand as you get stronger.
So for example if you buy stage 1 which goes up to 50 lbs, you can buy stage 2 which makes it adjustable to 70 lbs, then stage 3 which goes up to 90 lbs
Bowflex is limited to 52 lbs when you buy the Bowflex 552 or 90 lbs if you buy the Bowflex 1090.
If you buy the Bowflex 552 and you outgrow them, you can't add more weight to it.
You have to buy the additional set of dumbbells (Bowflex 1090) in order to add more weight to your workouts.
=====
Price
=====
Both these adjustable dumbbells are not cheap, however, buying a whole rack of dumbbells is much more expensive.
PowerBlock Stage 1 - Replaces 16 pairs of dumbbells
Powerblock Stage 2 - Replaces 22 pairs of dumbbells
PowerBlock Stage 3 - Replaces 28 pairs of dumbbells
Bowflex SelectTech 552 - Replaces 15 sets of dumbbells
Bowflex SelectTech 1090 - Replaces 34 sets of dumbbells

Yep. Thanks for the excellent comparison, Shredded Dad. A friend of mine has the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells, and I figured I'd look at them, but then I stumbled on the Power Block via Google. Your review helped me understand way more about how they operate, so it looks like Power Block is better for me. Now to track down a good adjustable bench!

Awesome review! After doing all the math and research, I purchased the Powerblock U-90 in 2011. Cost $727 but I'm glad I put in the investment then. Still considerably less that purchasing two dumbbells at each weight increment. The stand was around $100 and I use them about 4 times a week and they look brand new. The urethane coating is super nice and reduces noise and will prevent any rusting. I have nothing against Bowflex, but the size and hearing that the selectors broke easily steered me to what I have been using for 9 years.

I bought the Bowflex 552's, and I love them. I was considering the Powerblocks, but they were about the same price, and the Powerblock just seemed a little odd and unnatural to use them. It was expensive, but it is easy to use and replaces a whole rack. But if you don't have the budget, Dicks Sporting Goods and many other places sell dumbbell handles in either standard or Olympic size, that you just add weight plates to it, kind of like a mini barbell. They are much cheaper, around $20-$30 a handle, and are worth it if you already have plates.

Bowflex is coated steel. Which is similar to most expensive plates you would find in a commercial gym. The weight is also mounted to a central and balanced point which is why traditional dumbbells are constructed in this form. I would argue looking at the powerblock that the balance is inconsistent.

I've only tried the Powerblock a few times when the local gym had a set, and I never was able to get used to having my hand inside the weights. I felt that it banged my forearm a lot and during curls the weight rattled a bit which was very distracting. I also felt like the mechanism jammed up occasionally, but again these were publicly used Powerblocks and I imagine they were not well cared for. I did see a sample set of the Bowflex at Dick's Sporting goods and I thought the mechanics worked really well, but with the amount of plastic involved I did have concerns they would wear out faster. I ultimately bought adjustable IronMaster dumbbells. They are very solid, which I like, but if I were to go back and do it again I would buy something else. Liek the adjustable dumbbells mentioned in this video, the Ironmaster dumbells are quite expensive, especially considering their relatively simple construction. The empty weights plus the screws themselves are supposedly 10 lbs and the default weights you get when you buy a set are only 5 lbs each; I had to buy some 2.5 lb plates separately and will probably need to buy some 22.5 lbs plates for convenience. Right now, to add/remove between 20 lbs and 45 lbs, I need to move 6 plates on each dumbbell. The plates are square and nest into each other, so I often pinch my fingers during in the process. This takes probably 30-45 secs to do both dumbbells if I work quickly. At their lowest weight, the screws on the IM dumbbells actually don't seem to grab the threads very well. I've had them almost come out on me several times while doing shoulder raises with 15 lbs. At 20 lbs I had zero problems though...probably because the 5 lb weights are thicker than the 2.5 lb plates and apply sufficient back-force on the threads when the screws are tightened to hold everything in place.

I've owned both and the powerblocks are better. With that said, the bowflex stopped working properly after about 2 years, and then purchased the powerblocks. I sold those after a year and simply bought a dumbbell set. I recommend the set if you don't plan to go past the stage 1 50lbs. When you start going into 70 and 90lbs range, then space starts becoming a major issue with dumbbells. The powerblocks are better built then the bowflex, but bowflex are easier and more convenient in making small weight changes. Removing the adder weights to go up 2.5 or 5lbs gets annoying really fast. Going up at 10lbs intervals is a lot for some people, especially people who have just started working out. I had the powerblock EXP Stage 1 with the stand for about a year, and sold them and just purchased dumbbell set (5-45lbs in 5lbs increments) with a vertical stand, and size difference is an inch or 2 in width.
@dkmchui
@dkmchui 2 жыл бұрын
The exact same reason why i got the non exp version 10-50 lb for the 5 lbs increment without the adder weight. Anything past 50 lbs i use barbell. The 50-70 and 70-90 expansion set don't make much sense in terms of their size.

@@Dratio I ordered mine at the first hint of the gyms possibly being closed. I was eyeing them anyway to make my home gym more complete and finally found a good enough excuse to buy them now. They basically feel like regular dumbbells you find in a gym when you are using them. The only real tradeoff there is that adjusting isn't as quick as the dialing system on the Bowflex. The relatively small weight increments are neat, particularly on the kettlebell. You can even get microplates.

When they are on the floor however, I find the “peg” isn’t rigid enough and the prongs go into different weights. I often need to get down on all fours, and guide the prongs into place. @@13bigginge You're correct...sort of. Each weight is manufactured from multiple pieces of die-cut sheet steel (probably 1/8"). The plates are then riveted together to form the core plate and encased in plastic. I say encased because the plastic isn't bonded to the steel core. Consequently, it is possible to crack the outer plastic casing and expose the steel plates underneath.

I like the PowerBlock theoretically speaking because it's metal, seems more flexible and compact. However, it also seems very convoluted and awkward compared to the more standardized shape and mechanism of the Bowflex system. I would say PowerBlock wins hands down if it were only HEX shaped instead of shaped like a frigging loaf of bread. It just looks totally awkward, and that square shape is probably a hazard if you do actually need to drop the thing. A hex shape would be much easier to deal with I think. That goes for both systems actually.
@bingbung
@bingbung 2 жыл бұрын
The powerblock may look complicated, but it's actually extremely simple and intuitive when you try it in person. I could not for the life of me tell how it worked through videos, but in person, they are so cool. It's just like changing weights for a Lat pull down machine - just move the pin up or down to change the weight. And the fact that it's square actually makes them easier to put back in place-and hold together every firmly as if one solid block. Even better is that the ends of the powerblock are flat so you can rest them on your legs in between shoulder Press reps.
