As a kid in the early 70s, I got my first ball. It was an 8 pound Brunswick Black Beauty. Because it was so light, it would not return after the first shot. So, I had to use a heavier house ball on the spare shot. The house ball would then return, while pushing my 8 pound ball back to me... True story. 😊

we have a couple older ladies in the league Im in that this happens to. one uses a 6# the other uses #8. they have to wait for the person in the next lane to take their shot so it forces the light balls back. it funny and annoying at times.

Reminds me of this one time a few years back I went bowling and the lanes the put me and my friends on had no balls in the area. Then we bowled our first shots and our balls didn't come back. Turns out, some people had used a bunch of the 8 lbs. house balls which were too light to come back up which clogged up the entire return system. Instead of saying something, they just threw every other ball some that over 50 were stuck. they hade to take the cover off the lane returns.

Oh, yeah! The Black Beauty was my first ball at 8lbs at age 5 in 1974. I still have it and had it plugged about 8 years ago to work on my swing drills. Dang thing actually hit pretty good when throwing it two handed. Lol.

Now I'm wanting to see a series of episodes with odd challenges. The 2 lbs ball is one, obviously. How about a 30 lbs one? Maybe a different set of challenges for a bit of team sport? Your team has to complete a predetermined set of frames with each player taking turns on each throw (meaning two players per frame). Set up a 7-10 split for your team mate and they have to clear it. 8 points for a partial completion (meaning the setup is done properly) and counts as a spare and 10 points for a completion and counts as a strike.

If you watch carefully he makes a good adjustment half way through the game. He rolls it in the first few frames and then he starts lobbing it way down the lane in the later frames which worked a lot better.

With all the new-fangled ways of bowling, a two pound ball opens more possibilities, like throwing the ball overhand. I don't think that's ever been done before, at least not in serious competition. It would have the opposite spin of throwing underhand, so it would be almost like bowling left handed if you were a righty, and vice-versa if you were lefty. That might be handy in certain situations, like a righty trying to pick up a 1-2-4-7 spare.

Reminds me back in the late 70's. The head mechanic at Dick Hoover's Lanes in Brunswick, Ohio would routinely throw 8lb house balls... just messing around. Amazingly, while just cupping the ball, would routinely throw big arcing strikes. Way to go Jabby!

A topic that would be interesting is Weight vs. Speed. I would think a heavy ball rolled slower then a lighter ball rolled faster could carry the same energy. I roll a 16lb ball at 13.5 mph and my teammate rolls a 14lb ball at 15 mph. Which one carries more energy to the pins? Is there a graph showing energy of a bowling ball as a result of Weight vs. Speed?

Is there any reason he throws with hook on those 1 to 4 pin split attempts? Surely it would be better to just go straight down the middle and just aim for the outside of the pin you want to fly inwards? The first 4 frames for example, were all crying out for a laser-straight second bowl, take the hook and oil out of the equation and it wouldnt matter that you were only using a flyweight ball.

The issue is not only controlling it but the fact that it deflects so much that it's hard to carry even a perfect shot and with the exception of single pins cover spares.

We bowled in grade school with completely hollow bowling balls that you could bounce like a basketball. We bowled in the gym floor. They must have been designed just for that.

Makes me wonder about spare shots when you have separated pins. Would using a lighter ball make some more kind of splits since the ball will actually bounce instead of going straight through. He picked up that one spare because the ball deflected and took out another set of pins. It seems it might be helpful for spares that are harder because you rely strictly on pin action to carry across the lane.

I think so....we had a very old guy in our league who threw a light ball. I cant remember the split but it was pretty big and his ball bounced off the one pin and into the other. Something a normal weight/speed ball would have no chance of doing

In my "heyday", I rolled a 10 pounder. Since I've become disabled, I can only roll Duckpin balls. The last time I rolled my 10 pound ball, I threw my shoulder out, and couldn't move my arm for 2 days. However, plug up one set of those holes, and I would easily give that 2 pounder a chance. I throw with a backspin straight ball(both 10s and Ducks)... I'd actually like to see how to goes with a ball that light.

its simple physics. F=MA. Adding more Mass is gonna allow a lot more pin action and obviously increases in score possibility. Likewise you can also throw a light ball really fast and have large change in acceleration when it hits the pins. Both are possible but the control with a slower ball is better. So yeah they can bowl just as good but its harder.

For the feel and the power. When the pins weigh 3.5lbs, it's a fight for a 2lb ball to power through it and not just bounce off. I did this challenge with a 3lb rubber ball, and a 2lb foam ball 2 years ago, with a 235 average, I scored an amazing 57 with the rubber ball, and a 38 with the foam ball. It's humbling, I'll stick to my 16lb thank you. :D

I think this is an interesting issue. I throw a 14lbs bowling ball, but was looking for a lighter ball to practice getting your hand better behind the ball instead of above it. To experience the feeling better! What is the best weight for a man to practice with assuming the ball is drilled with fingertip holes?

I've always heard practice with what you use. Practicing with a lighter ball, and switching to heavier for league/tournaments would likely throw off a lot of things.

I have been bowling for 42 years (65), am 5'9", 160 pounds, and have always thrown 16 pound balls. When I tried 15 pounds I left too many 10 pins. The reason 16 pounds is the limit is it would give big guys too much of an advantage to allow even greater weight.

I’ve actually left a variation of the split he had in the 7th frame-my 10-pin stood along with it. Except mine was with a 16 pound ball, right through the nose. Not sure how the laws of physics even allowed for a leave like that…I think the house maintenance was very poor. Sadly I did not convert-couldn’t find a 2-pound ball quickly enough.

After a bicep injury I used 12 lbs for 1 1/2 years. No one could tell it was 12 from the way it hit the pins. The book Bowling Beyond Basics will give all the math and details. Summary is that power = (mass X velocity squared) / 2 So a very small increase in speed makes up for a big change in weight. A lighter ball thus hits just as hard provided it is thrown a little faster.
