Both the Superstar saga and Bowsers inside stories remakes side modes explained stuff that the original games didn’t really bother to do

Dark Star might’ve been if you had gone strictly with POW upgrades for Luigi, and upgraded the rest of his stats with Beans, but that’s still an RNG fest

It’s possible @kirbyfraftgames. I beat it and the game with level 36 Luigi with A-Ok gear (dark mechfawel head drops it), Dx hp socks found in bubbles lake, and DX pow gloves (you should know where this item is).

the interesting part about the Dark Star's 4 orb attack, is when both bros are alive, and the orbs are 4 of the same color and it chooses specifically Top to Bottom, this attack is basically frame-perfect in that circumstance. you have to jump it perfectly by the 2nd orb otherwise you'll jump the 3rd, but the 4th orb will almost always catch the bro right in their hitbox as they jump, as that orb's too fast. I did what's called a nerve mode challenge run where you do Jump/Hammer/Punch/Fire breath only, no items, no equipment/Badges, Stache/Horn only on level up(it must be +3 stat every-time for consistency) and challenge medal on as well as +1 level per area arc(say its bowser's turn in story, he gets +1 level, if is the bros turn they get +1 level). you're allowed to fix mario and luigi's exp by killing one of them so its close together or exact same after the sockhop battle. you're also allowed to heal w/Bowser's inhale cuz its important and he dies in 1-2 hits anyways. giant battle heals are also allowed cuz its a temporary item. also, the Excellent+POW badge's literally required for Dark star+Dark Fawful and the final boss, these're the only exceptions. so normally the bros would be at level 22 by Dark Star with these rules, but I can confirm its impossible to beat Dark Star at this level because it outspeeds, meaning it always recovers from its vulnerable Cycle after the bros act. with its ability to potentially heal over 90 hp specifically after the 2nd vulnerable cycle, its impossible at this level. at level 35 however, this's where Mario outspeeds without any speed upgrades or equips. this lets Mario act 1 more time in the Dark Star's vulnerable cycle. combined with the effects of the regular Excellent!+Pow Badge, which is required to win, level 35 is key. I can confirm all those +3 Stache/Horn levels each level up are required, as otherwise Dark Star becomes impossible due to its potentially healing over 90-120hp, and I can confirm this is absolutely true, it can and will heal multiple times. I can confirm that 4 same-color orb move going top-to bottom makes Dark Star the hardest boss in the game w/these conditions. that's not even including how aggressive it is, going 2-3 times a turn at low hp. I found out the true reason as to why top-to-bottom is so hard is because of how close the 3rd+4th orbs are to the screen when it goes that way, whilst bottom to top is a lot easier to dodge cuz its further out. the good news is this challenge run is completely possible if you use the Excellent!+Pow badge on Dark Star and the rest of the finale's bosses. using Excellent+POW badge on Dark Fawful's cuz you don't want to have to wait 5 turns for what's legit forever when Vacuum helmet escapes, granted I can confirm its possible without. its just the Vacuum's drag attack(only 1 chance to stop or its a reset)+Dark Fawful's Star Ray switch up at half hp, as well as the above 5 turn wait time for Dark Fawful to detach from the helmet, is what makes this fight difficult+extremely tedious. but its possible. the badges just cut down the total amount of turns but not the difficulty, so they're allowed Dark Bowser is literally an estimated 475k hp wall of 1500 hp revives alone specifically, without the level 40 upgraded Excellent Badge, but I can deff confirm its very possible, cuz its the easiest final boss in the series the entire game deff wasn't meant to be beaten like this but I can confirm its completely possible, even with the unique Mario Solo vs Junker. Junker saves the run solely cuz he gives you one less button to worry about, keeping Luigi completely safe.

I have a feeling this might be possible by grinding out the A-OK Wear before fighting Blizzard Midbus (dropped by Dark Mechawful Heads) and getting the Giant Shell from Bowser Path (despite it being a shell in name, it's gear for the bros), then using the Shroob Boots (from the Shroob fight) to drop enemy POW with jumps. I saw the Giant Shell used in a no-dodge challenge run somewhere on KZbin (though they used the Bro Socks from the Yoo Who Cannon challenge in the Cholestoroad, which wouldn't be allowed here since it uses Mario). The Giant Shell reduces damage taken to 0 if the move would do less than 20% of the wearer's max HP, which would completely remove all skill requirement from the Luigi sections of the challenge except for maybe dodging the attacks that use Starlow and overall making the challenge even more of a slog since you wouldn't be able to take advantage of any POW boosts aside from the occasional Super Strike. Great video overall, definitely gonna stay tuned for future M&L challenge runs.

Honestly I didn’t know this was this much to the game when I did this challenge 💀. A lot of people have given me suggestions on how to beat the dark star. Apparently Luigi can enter the star shop but he just needs to talk to the toads (I have no clue how to make him do that.) I do plan on coming back to this challenge with the remake but most likely I would do it without Luigi this time which would open up some problems still but it would be fun. Apparently in the manual for the original Super Mario Bros it is stated that Peach is the only one with magic that can rival that on Bowser's side. Maybe that's why the first thing that usually happens is her kidnapping. Also she floats stuff around in a lot of games (including herself) like the trophy in Mario tennis In this scene her power was being amped by Starlow, which also happens with star themed helpers in the original paper Mario and the new Princess Peach Showtime.

I'll be real even though Luigi is one of my favorite characters he is always goofing off in the most serious of moments in these games, which is why I wasn't too fazed by Starlow being annoyed. Something to note from a close friend of mine is that in the Japanese version her insults become more endearing as the game goes on, which could've been lost in translation.

I did this run on PC and I used MelonDS. It’s definitely a lot easier using a controller than mobile. I have an iPhone so when I first played this game I used Delta Emulator. I found it difficult on mobile for sure. Just lock in and really focus on your button presses while you’re on mobile.
