The best way to try to interpret her music is based on how it feels. This song made me feel stuck or trapped without really understanding the lyrics. Later I learned it was about sleep paralysis, and basically she represents a dream demon in the video. Also, she’s on the radio A Lot, just turned 18, and has absolutely exploded on the music scene. Her music is the music that no one knew they wanted until they heard it and realized it’s everything.

Especially because so much of her sound revolves around feeling. Like in xanny the chorus is distorted and bass heavy because that’s what it feels like when you breathe in smoke. And the verses are light and airy, which is what smoke looks like. It’s so cool

She perfectly shows what it feels like to have sleep paralysis, to be trapped in your own mind and body and to see things that are there, but not. When I watched that video I was hooked, was the first one I watched from her and then got interested in her art. She has synesthesia like me, she knows how that feels like combined with deep depression and seeing shit. She is a decade younger but she really makes me feel like I'm not alone in my fucking basement, facing demons. And therefore I really admire her cause it takes some freaking bravery to show your inner demons and what they look, sound and feel like.

She’s definitely an individual. She and her brother write all the music together and he’s an incredible producer. Love her originality. She's so real and she touches on real problems that everyday people deal with. She seems to have similar demons that I face, depression, anxiety etc. I love that she's not afraid to face her fears and be real about stuff. I'm just reiterating now. Anyways, she's amazing. I love her voice it just makes her lyrics feel so alive. I don't think there is a song by her that I even remotely dislike. I love them all. I love how she also leaves her fans to the lyrics for themselves. I think that only makes it easier to connect with the songs on your own personal level. However, I would love to know some times why she wrote the song with her brother. They are just both amazing people that I'd love to meet. One last thing I'll say is she reaches so many people to the young and old. She doesn't have a specific demographic. At least that's how I feel. Anyone I have ever had listen to her music doesn't have anything negative to say.

The one thing I have to say that got me fully into Billie’s music, is the fact that you can’t avoid really really FEELING something, every time you hear her music. You stop everything else and just listen. The lyrics and her fantastic voice are unavoidable, and you get immersed in a whole different way than any other music, sorta. I’ve never felt all this with another artist or music group, and it grabbed me instantly. Her music is crazy good!

Bury A Friend is the first Billie Eilish song I discovered and I immediately fell in love with it because it hit straight home with me. It gives the impression of experiencing a bad dream, and I've been in that state of mind more than any person should where life gets so bad and traumatic that you can't believe it's real, that you must be asking yourself whether you're actually living a horrible nightmare. To me it felt satisfying to watch and listen to because it gives recognition to the bad shit that happens in people's lives. I think that's something very important that people crave when they experience suffering, is just recognition because nobody wants to feel they're goddamn alone in the world. To me this song is about having toxic people in your life and feeling like you've become a toxic person because of it, because of narcissistic abuse. It's becoming aware of the horrible ways you try to cope with it, becoming aware that you're capable of behaving like a person you never wanted be and a person that causes harm to others who cause harm to you. It's about knowing you can be just as horrible as those harmful people and literally saying 'why don't you run from me? why aren't you scared of me?' I think there's a sense of remorse involved too because if you really mean harm to someone, you're never going to give them an open warning pretty much. It's about calling somebody out for suspecting they have bad intentions. It's this entire story of just a toxic relationship or friendship, really, at least the way I see it. It's about knowing what makes you valuable to harmful people who want to exploit you and openly saying what you suspect they could be after. For her it's fame, she talks about how people want to exploit her for fame. I think the lyrics are still vague enough to be left to your own interpretation though but I mean I've seen interviews of her, I'm pretty sure about that one but I'm still giving you my interpretation in my own words. The part where she's singing about debt and selling her soul, I think it's about thinking: to redeem yourself for something horrible you've done you gotta do things that are against your nature, against who you are and harmful to yourself and I feel like that ties in perfectly into this story of experiencing a toxic relationship, the way that I know toxic relationships. But for Billie, I'm not entirely sure what that part specifically means to her. I think that's basically my entire interpretation.. Long story short: it's about a horrible, harmful relationship from my point of view. But all of that really says allot more about me than it says about Billie, probably.

As someone who suffers from sleep paralysis on a regular basis, this video is such a spot on representation of the feelings and hallucinations associated with it. Mine mostly consist of someone standing at the end of my bed staring at me, seeing spiders all over my roof and walls, and feeling immense pressure on my chest, throat and head. The hands grabbing at her and the needles is probably the best representation of the suffocating feeling I get with the immense pressures I experience.

There are many layers of personal meaning in this song. One of the main themes is the philosophical question of where our consciousness goes when we fall asleep. That theme is bled into a larger philosophical question of what happens after we die. This is something specifically troubling to Billie having friends who’ve lost their lives at a young age and dealing with that reality as such a young girl.

"I wanna end me" pretty much tells you the main meaning of the song. She was depressed and had suicidal thoughts for years. Her song "Bad guy" got her a lot of radio rime (I'm pretty sure you've heard it somewhere). You should watch that next it's more upbeat and kinda "silly" in a humorous way (which is obviously why got radio time although songs like bury a friend are better imo). If you want another spooky "You should see me in a crown" is a must. "When the party is over" also got radio time and has a very memorable music video. "Ocean eyes" is what got her popular online which she recorded at 13(!!!).

The song and video are about nightmares and sleep paralysis, including the title "bury a friend" which is about the fear of losing a friend, something she went through and we can all relate as being a real nightmare. Well since you asked here's my 4th and hopefully last comment lol. I could write a book on Billie apparently. Billie says the song is about her night terrors. It's obviously of course mixed with her suicidal thoughts. She also says it's about the question that she's always wondered about, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" Which is the title of her debut album which this song is on. She keeps repeating this one important detail, she likes to leave her songs up for interpretation. She loves that each individual person who listens to her songs will have a different idea of what it means to them personally. She thinks that's beautiful. I can say that the high pitched whirring in the background is actually a bit they recorded from Billie at the dentist having her teeth drilled lol. So that's something. Finneas likes to record sounds that he likes as he goes along his day and he often winds up using them in songs. For instance almost the entire beat to Billie's song Bad Guy literally comes from the sound that the crosswalk button makes in Australia lmao. And the man in the video, unfortunately I dont know his name, is a friend of Billie's. She says she got an idea and texted him asking for him to just send an audio recording of him saying her name. "Billie." So that's where that came from. They're friends in real life. But of course I'm quite sure he's also an artist.

IMO this song is extremely deep, it is facing the human negative thoughts, actions, & in a way evil side of being within a human body. I believe she is confronting the parts of herself she despises & wants to avoid becoming this side of her. Watching what you say, your actions, emotions & thoughts towards others. The fact that some of those negative traits are what made her reach fame. She knows that she had to embrace that side to be able to become a star, but the constant internal struggle to avoid becoming the “evil” side of yourself. Amazing song & video.

The song is about her night terrors and sleep paralysis. It's basically about being trapped in her own body while she's having extremely vivid and terrifying nightmares, basically waking up to hallucinations and seeing things, but is completely paralyzed and unable to regain any control of the situation, and desperately wanting it to end. Night terrors and sleep paralysis are horrible things to suffer from on their own, let alone having to deal with them both on a regular basis.
