Hey Everyone! Here is the greatly anticipated tutorial on how i got this client to a white blonde from magenta/red box dye in one appointment! shes been dying her hair this colour for years and is ready to try something completely new. her hair is very slow growing so she had to wait a long time to have these roots get to this length, which means a long time between the last time she coloured it, and our appointment. so if you have box dye in your hair, the best way to go about this kind of transformation is to be patient. let the colour fade gradually and slowly so you have the safest lift possible. i hope you all enjoy this tutorial and learn something new from it to add into your bleaching practices in the chair! let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
remember to follow us on instagram @bobbyhairstudio and on tik tok as well. if you would like to follow my own account, its @vancity.blonde on IG.

I’m a 15 year old guy whose always (since I can remember) had an interest in hairdressing and I get called gay and stuff (which I’m not, I’m straight) and get looked down upon for wanting to do hairdressing like it’s not good enough. I always pretend to want to do other things. It’s videos like this and KZbinrs like Katie and Brad Mondo that really encourage me to do this when I leave school. It just sucks that my family think that if I don’t go to uni (in Australia you go to tafe for trades including hairdressing) I have no support.

In cosmetology school, almost all the guys in my class were straight lol. Your family may criticize you now, but if you decide to follow through and go pro, they'll be hitting you up REGULARLY for hair services. Just don't let them bully you into free labor.

Thank you! Been doing hair for almost 15 years. I LOVE learning from other stylists. In my experience, I've learned more from trial and error (both my own and from other stylists) than I learned in cosmetology school. Thank you for taking the time to not only record this, but the time you took to thoroughly explain everything!!! I truly appreciate your words of wisdom!!!

Looking all of your videos taught me a lot about blondes. A few months ago, a stylist ruined my blonde hair, turning it into blue, yellow, grey and white, it was a lot going on. I decided to dye my hair brown because I was so tired of paying a lot of money and ending with different results. I let my hair rest for a long time, and now I decided to go back to blonde, all by myself and trust me, your videos help a lot. Thank you so much! Wish me luck. 🤣

I understand your frustration, but don't do this yourself. This is a highly advanced and specialized technique, and things can go wrong. Do research finding a stylist in your city and you should get good results, because this suff is so tricky that a regular stylist (who has training and experience more than you) can easily get it wrong.

I have never seen any of your videos and I am ACTUALLY gagged, because from from all the mistakes I’ve made in my career over the past decade have created the EXACT SAME METHOD to our madness, we do our foils almost the same, the paddle, the foils, keeping the hair up closer to the head, working over the part line to keep it insulated, the towel. Loved this video!

That’s so wild! It shows that great minds think alike, when we learn from our mistakes we often create similar solutions. People that pay attention to working out their kinks tend to be able to think ahead in future situations that could lead them into another mistake. It’s pattern recognition!

I do love the paddle. I bought one 6 years ago and I use it for almost any bleaching or coloring jobs I do at home. Since covid began no one at my house has been to a salon so the occasional cut and color I did for family members over the years became doing all of the cut and color for everyone. My oldest daughter wanted to go from dark brown to lavender after she had her first baby in 2020 and that was a time.

I can’t tell you how many times I got told that I need to go brown first before I went blonde. Which didn’t make sense to me because my hair was already so light.

Absolutely amazing! I went to my hairdressers to get the red taken out of my hair. Im naturally dark blonde, but I wanted this result. I thought it would be a really long process? Thank you for making such a well explained video. The hair came out perfect from what she started with😍 if you don’t mind me asking, when you said you added more and more 20vol with each bowl. What ratio of bleach and developer did you use? Or when you meant you started with a little bit of 20 what other volume did you add to get up to only using 20 with you last bowls? Did you start with 10vol? Sorry if it’s confusing but I hope you get what I’m saying. Have a nice day 💕✨

This is awesome, you are a super professional! Everytime I want to go blonde every single hairdresser I go to starts telling me that it's too difficult, that noone ever bleaches hair like that nowadays and it's out of fashion, and we end up with just some highlights in my hair. 🤷‍♀️ Thinking about buying a box dye and doing this myself at home.

That's probably why SO SO SO many people are also watching KZbin videos and doin their hair at home😂. I had to stop paying hundreds of $ for a basic hair dye job. I went to sallys and bought all my supplies, did my research and have dyed my hair x10 better than any salon I've been too!!👏 FYI: skip the box dye, you can buy quality brand bleach, developer, toner, dye & other supplies for actually cheaper while keeping hair in good condition also. Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner like Oplex.

I'm not a hairdresser but am genuinely curious: When you have a client like this where you have to use so much bleach and leave it on for such a long time, how do you make sure the hair isn't being damaged to the point of breaking while it's sitting in the foils? I am just stunned by this color correction -- that client's hair is just gorgeous.

It all honestly comes down to experience! My experience with this lightener, and my developer bumping as well as treating the hair to a bonding service have all worked for me over the years. I couple these tactics together and it allows me to have a lot of faith in the strength of the hair to endure the lightening for so long.

I wouldn’t consider hair color from sallys box dye ive seen professionals use hair color from there but they do sale to everyone. Some of their color is extremely hard to get it but not still not anywhere near as hard as box dye if my clients do dye their own hair I recommend going to sallys vs going walmart picking up an actual box dye. Btw have tried using olaplex with k18? To me their an amazing combination after i rinse the color i use a neutralizing shampoo then i add olaplex 2 let that sit a good 15-30 mins in a conditioning cap under the dryer then shampoo that out using a moisturizing shampoo sometimes a clarifying then a moisture if i still feel any bleach residue then use the k18 mask sometime i use the spray again then a little mask if i feel like the hair needs more repair. The mist i think has more of the peptide i could be wrong but I know hair usually takes in mist sprays better than creams and mask. Great job!!! One question when u put the towel on top was it a warm towel ?

That’s a good tip! I consider the ION to be a box dye. It’s pretty strong and even though it’s a step up from garnier, it’s still a permanent dye! I used a room temperature towel for this but if the room was cold I would have warned it up with my hair drier first

Ok so glad someone said it, Ion is not box dye and this method is dangerous on actual box dye tbh.

I rather my clients use ion than some actual box dye chemically ion is not the chemical category as box dye as most box dyes react really badly with bleach I’ve seen hair literally start smoking from trying to bleach box dyed hair. Now not all box dye will do it usually really cheap ones that do it but I’ve seen it expensive box dyes as well. Now ion some times is hard to remove from the hair especially their semi permanent colors but that could be a good thing too.

"Box dye" is generally considered to be dye you can get without a license (especially permanent dye). I do agree that there are levels though, from "definitely will cause damage and make lifting a dangerous process" to "isn't as good for your hair as professional products but is more easily worked with." Not all box dyes are created equal for sure.

bob with amethyst black box dye one application at 2 boxes over pure white blond that started breaking. I know it wouldn't hold color. I didn't put back orange underneath because I knew the amethyst would fade to a woody pink brown rather than a warm red without the orange. The roots will be as stubborn as ever. To do my hair right I need to watch the layers for overlap. Starting in the back I have to decide on vertical or diagonal slices and concentrate on the front and crown for my blond look.I have to keep moving and not go to the very ends until round 2 and roots will still be last so I will go around my heard 3 times. At the root time though, I will mooch large hand fulls of bleach back and forth without friction to over saturate as there are not so many ends and I need to move faster in the front. If it's orange that's where I stop. If it skips orange and goes to a pale yellow thats fine too, but if the ends should go all the way to platinum just past 15 minutes I may have to skip the roots a little and wait until I break the base for my color touch up which I don't bleach on. Face it, no one will touch my hair in this condition and just adding more box dye will make the problem worse. I look hideous in midtown browns, so blond is my only choice.

This looks really great! How long has the bleach left in the hair in total? With the whole process? Most of the time, when I do the first part with the foils and when im done with all the sections, mostly I'm already like a hour further. And then is when I get really nervous because I'm thinking (omg the first foil is already in there for a hour!). I'm always very scared for this total bleach makeovers. So I'm very curious how long the bleach has left in the hair. 😂 (sorry for my bad English)

Question .... I thought in school they say to bleach on non washed, dry , dirty hair because the oils in the hair save it a little better than sqeeky clean hair. I know sometimes what where taught in hair school sometimes there are better wats to do things so im just curious because i noticed you washed her hair . Im a new cosmologist so trying to learn different techniques! Thank u!

Why don't you share this video to your hairdresser, and ask if it's something they could do for you? If you have a good hairdresser they should be willing to watch it and learn some of her techniques. A good hairdresser will always be open and willing to learn new things. If not you need a new hairdresser. Just keep in mind it is a very long process and time is money for a hairdresser. We generally make between $100- $200 per hour depending on the service and products being used. That process would cost a minimum of $500, but going forward you would only need a touch up and the cost would be much less.

The blondie purple toner you added to the colour bowl at the beginning- I can’t find that product. May I ask where you got it? I’m looking to do something similar to what you’re doing in this video. Need to go from dark golden blonde to more of a platinum cool tone.

Try doing the hair that has color first so that way you wont over lift the new hair growth and cause damage and you wont have to hassle trying two different toners to tone two levels of hair.Once the hair is too white the hair wont be left with enough strength left.Good or bad I still learn thanks for video😊.

Edit: just kidding, I asked too soon before finishing the video! Thanks so much! I'm so curious, what do you charge for something like this? I've only been to one hair stylist my entire life, and while she's never done anything like this, I'm sure she doesn't charge me full price.
