Great Fun. Very interesting concept. This brings back so many fond memories of building and flying RC models in my late teens and early twenties. That is more than a half century ago. How did that happen? I wonder if adding some length to the wings with poly-dihedrals might add some stability to the craft. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

Simply make the fuselage a bit longer! Results in a far more versatile design, we used to fly control line 'flying wings' with 2.5cc diesel motors in the good old days when schoolboys were trusted with solvents, sharp instruments & even ether based fuel, now i have to prove i am over 25 to buy a potato peeler & as for a bottle of 100 paracetamol, don't even think about it!

I'd bet it would fly better if lighter. Perhaps you could fit a longer nose to move the motor and battery forward and thus need less extra nose weight to make CG. The bane of cardboard has always been it's weight disadvantage, so anything you can do to lighten the design helps.

@@AndrewNewton Flite Fest is at the end of June this year. Still plenty of time to plan an international trip. Just sayin'. . . But seriously, if you ever do consider a trip over here and genuinely hope to spend a bit of time with the FT guys, Flite Fest (and the month leading up to it) is not ideal. With all the work that goes into the event and so many people here, it's hard for the guys to find much time to mingle outside of photo ops, autographs, or friendly greetings. Cool beans... You beat me too it. I did build a pair of profile planes using foam core board that I am waiting on an ordered Eflite 480 outrunner to show up for. I had tried a smaller brushed motor in the smaller profile plane and the power was lacking because in spite of weighing less than 3 ounces a brushed 8520 motor stolen from a 1 ounce Minimum RC plane was far to little. On the other hand the 8520 does a bang up job connected to a Guillow's Flying Machine along with micro electronics. I really don't like the foam core board for durability and would like to try gator board or a decent foam if I can order it.

I've built ~5 planks now with similar design (though with foamcore and 2205 motors). I've had very stable flights with the CG at 17% back from the leading edge. I like planks due to the very simple construction and savings in servos, pushrods, etc. You commented mid-flight that a "better thrust angle" was needed. Better is more up or more down ?

Hello to Australia from cold rainy central Europe 🙂 Nice video, thank you for upload 👍 Q1: How did you get longitudinal (pitch) stability without elevator or autostable airfoil? Q2: Do you use elevons for roll/pitch control? Q3: Do you plan to build bigger one? (if any bigger cardboard box will appear in your neighborhood) 🙂 Thank you for eventual answers.. Have a nice day downthere! eMPi
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton Жыл бұрын
Hello MP. Yes all flying wings or planks need elevons for control, and this one needed some reflex for level flight. It would be better to have a proper plank airfoil with reflex built in.
@leechild4655

Thats a fun design there. You are right it needs a good power set and all the weight a tad forward of the center of gravity. I was thinking maybe less throws on the flaps just to keep it from tipping the wing so easy? Could you set it up for some gyro and switch between modes?

@FPVREVIEWS
@FPVREVIEWS Жыл бұрын
with such fwd CG, hence so much downforce required (evidenced by the extreme reflex in the elevons, the opposite of what you need for good lift), what is lacking is not more control throws, but more lift. much of the CL coefficient of lift (total amount of lift that the wing can generate) is being wasted just to attain pitch stability (which is still not very good). Plank flying wings use a special airfoil, with most of the lift being generated by a unique shape on the leading edge. An even better solution is to add a horizontal stab... I wonder how well the Corvo actually flies, and how well it would fly it it were not using this strange and inefficient configuration.?? love your ingenuity with the cardboard construction. often these cardboard planes of yours fly better than the production models. the configuration that you are replicating got you on the performance in this case. considering that, you made it fly remarkably well.
@marielizysurourcq
@marielizysurourcq Жыл бұрын
I agree that a strenghtened (carbon rod) large horizontal stab could be there since there is a vertical tail already. I would even make it removable for transport. This would remove most of the reflex

I know it's part of the game, but cardboard is too heavy and your wing loading is probably responsible for the flight issues. Take any nicely designed foam poster board plane and dupe it in cardboard and you'll hate the result. I wonder why the CORVO didn't use poster board. Equally transparent to radar, much lighter and even stiffer. Sure cardboard is free, but for this application I don't think one dollar per board is any kind of factor. Perhaps these are being locally reproduced in Ukrainian homes and cardboard is all that's available. But given you need a lot of pretty significant electronics, that doesn't seem likely.

They're already cheap enough that one standard Russian infantry squad mag dumping costs more than the drone, at least if you're calculating using market price for 7.62x39mm ammo.

With enough power you could fly a real brick (with inadequate wings [or even no wings if ridiculously overpowered , haha] ) so with today's motors and batteries it's not really that amazing what the hot wire carved Styrofoam and cardboard platforms can be flown

Aerodynamic efficiency does make a difference to range / endurance though, which is important in the Ukraine situation. Cheapness is good too -- GPS and autopilots and even inertial navigation sensors are incredibly small and cheap now.

@@BruceHoult and I imagine that drug smuggling will be changing real soon where radar invisible drones carry smaller amounts to scattered preset locations where someone is waiting to receive it. Law enforcement can't cover everywhere so instead of one big 1000 kilo load you'd have, say 500 each 2 kg loads going to 500 different places / receivers, dozens up to hundreds of miles from the border (and scattered along the border too).

@@bobjoatmon1993 perhaps it's time to take another approach to drugs?

@@BruceHoult oh yes, the war on drugs was lost a long time ago and has led to the militarization of the US police (and in my opinion turned a lot of them into jackbooted authoritarian thugs in uniform, and I'm an old white guy Conservative who should be a law&order guy but instead despise the police) So my take is let "evolution in action" take place. Let people use any drugs the want BUT if they injure anyone or cause property damage while F'd up then they don't go to jail, they get a indentured servant collar (with a small decapitation charge in it) and have to work for society for the rest of their life. And not live with any family, they gave that up when they were irresponsible using drugs. Or set up a Purgatory enclave of a thousand square miles out in the west US and dump all the convicted into it where they can be dog eat dog. Make it death to cross back out. Ship in food and water and let them sort out their own society (want to bet it'll be strongest and most viscous rules?). No more prisons, just a fence with automated machine guns and anti aircraft missiles around it. Residents didn't like the US laws and customs, let them make a society on their own inside the boundaries.
