i wanna thank you all for your nice comments. Appreciate it. Just wanna inform you that last time i had gloves on me was 9 years ago, and my weight was 60kg. For the past years i have just been to the gym. Not used to jump around with all this weight, as you can tell. Neither have i received any legkicks before. But i had fun :)

Very nice session. Props to both guys for keeping it light - especially the boxer. Eating low kicks for the first time could easily lead to someone starting to punch harder to avoid the pain of getting kicked

interesting! I'm a pretty heavy puncher myself, so I can definitely learn a thing or two from the boxer's movements. at the same time, learning to defend against a boxer would cover the glaring no-head-punches of full contact karate, while exposing the boxer to the world of kicks. great exchange of knowledge! parts that stood out to me: 1) clinching up & throwing knees against the boxer 2) getting jabbed in the face when trying to land a leg kick

Oh yeah this is definitely one of the most fun types of sparring, the polar opposite in style 😅

Boxers always have trouble with leg kicks. Specially someone who bears weight on the front leg like your friend. Spar looks fun though, boxers can take advantage of kyokushin dudes low hands so that sorta evens it out.

An interesting observation about Kyokushin. I studied Kyokushin from 1973 until 1987. during most of that time, we did not use leg kicks. They were just starting to be used in the mid 1980's.

I'm actually fairly convinced that a strong and talented Kyokushin practitioner would kick serious ass in Kickboxing competitions, if he does the training for it. Those kicks are beautiful and so technical, they're hard to read/block/avoid...Add to that that Kyokushin is all about resilience, being hard as steel, it's really a strength and technique focused style. I love it, wish I had practiced in my younger years. I'm too old now :(

Boxer had left hook open all day every time karate fighter kicked. Boxer could have stepped into the kick so it lands on upper thigh and not hurt as bad, and deliver left hook. With karate fighter off balance, even at half speed and power it would still likely be a knockdown.

I have a question. Why Kyokushin guys don't utilize blitz punches like Shotokan in gloved sparring? I mean things like those traditional chambered punches Machida use in MMA. To me, that's weird because Kyokushin has also roots in Shotokan Karate.
@SaikouKarate2 жыл бұрын
I would say that's generally a point sparring strategy that has a tendency to not translate very well over to full-contact continuous fighting. Sure you will see some guys do it now and again, but as a strategy it essentially stems from the point stop ruleset. ie a specific context where exposing yourself in doesn't matter as much because the match is stopped and resumed after every point - there is a minimal risk of counter attacks happening. (and if they do, it won't be hard) When you have both full contact and continuous fighting the risks are very high and the it's a generally less viable tactic. Especially considering that the stance required to properly employ that strategy comes with cripples both offence and defence in Kyokushin. Another point is yes Mas Oyama had training in Shotokan, but it wasn't a particularly appreciated time for him who based his early teaching almost exclusively on Goju Ryu Karate. The chambered punching is originally meant to represent the pulling of a limb with the "chambered arm" while punching with the other. To fight an opponent while chambering punches in the air, without pulling a limb, really doesn't make much sense.

@@Lcky-gu2gi Yeah, I will try to cross train in Kyokushin someday if I have the chance. It just looks kinda weird to me because I often watch Koshiki Karate's full contact matches which look more a combative version of Shotokan Karate than Kyokushin's version of gloved sparring.

What's the boxer doing playing so much defense? Why didn't he initially just step in and hammer the guy?
@SaikouKarate Жыл бұрын
Counters are a thing. If you just go in and try to "hammer the guy" and that person has even a vague idea of what they're doing it's just going to lead to blowing all your steam and getting hit more than you landed yourself.
@zacmich64722 жыл бұрын
Always been wondering just about how these compare: kicks from a lighter opponent against a heavier boxer. Btw, one question: why didn't you use more front kicks to keep the boxer at distance, and then, maybe a hook kick or spinning back kick?
@SaikouKarate2 жыл бұрын
There were some instances like 4:44 where he would feint either with his punches or with his feet to try to bait out kicks, retreat and then go in with punches, so I was mostly wary of that. Since I have never sparred him before and he is a larger puncher I tried to present as few openings as possible. Another thing is that as a boxer he is quite side on/bladed in his stance making his torso a smaller target.
@zacmich64722 жыл бұрын
@@SaikouKarate Yeah, boxers are very side-on. It's always a good experience to mix styles, I'm sure you two learned a lot. I myself want to try and see how a combination of a side and spinning hook kick would work but no spare boxer 😆 around to try that + you have to refrain yourself as not to hurt him after all

There's something not right here. First, the Kyokushin guy is punching the head. So, not within Kyokushin rules. Second, the boxer's skill level doesn't seem to match up. He's not aggressive enough. Missed too many opportunities to go inside the Kyokushin guy and fire rapid punches.
@mysticramen41042 жыл бұрын
That depends on who we are talking about, not every boxer is mike tyson and not every kyokushin karateka is andy hug 🤷♀️
@yaidk24582 жыл бұрын
Come on, they both did a good job. Imagine you are a boxer and you have never been kicked in your life, it's natural to be a bit hesitant... Also the reason Kyokushin guys don't punch the head isn't because they are unable to do it, it's because the martial art is without protective equipment. No gloves or wraps = head punches is very dangerous, especially for the puncher's hands.
@evernfromtha8682 жыл бұрын
So what if he's punching to the head? You think folks outside the dojo cares for what rules you follow in there? Stop the nonsense; that rule should only apply in the dojo and tournaments for safety reasons. When outside the school, whether life or death situations or sparring, DEFINITELY punch to the head. This shouldn't have to be explained.
@presentelaw2 жыл бұрын
@@evernfromtha868 so why's the boxer not kicking? Why not elbow the face or choke each other? What I'm saying is, if you want to show a comparison, it should be a proper one.
