Willie Pep was the greatest defensive boxer of all times and he didn't duck or avoid anyone either (having faced the devastating boxer-puncher Sandy Saddler 4 times and losing 3x's). His use of lateral movement, circling, foot feints, arm feints, slips, ducks, weaves, step backs, leans, old school "wrestling" tactics (that were actually holdovers from the bare-knuckle era pre-1860's), stiff arm/stop punches, spins, variable jabs, inside-fighting techniques, and counter punches made him a walking encyclopedia of boxing technique that has largely been forgotten today. With a final record of 241 total sanctioned professional bouts (with only 11 losses), it's easy to see that Pep knew what you were going to do before you even did it.

Hey Wilson, Lu here. I'd also note in footage like this that guys like Pep were very good at facing and threatening the center line. Like a fencer with his sword aimed at your body, the opponent always feels threatened. Famechon begins in good positions, but let's Pep's use of angles change the way he's facing, resulting in him not being in optimal punching positions and always being a step or two behind Pep's movement.

If I had to pick a modern guy like Willie Pep, it would be Pernell Whitaker. Sweat Pea ducked, crouched, rolled, moved laterally, twirled opponents, and leveraged punches with aplomb. If you're thinking Mayweather -forget it. Floyd does not have this perpetual kinetic ability -although MayMoney is good at suckering guys in and tagging them, and tying them up..
@seandafny
@seandafny 8 жыл бұрын
Floyd does have this ability as evidenced by his earlier fights. The thing is his boxing IQ has become so massive that he barely even has to move that much in the ring to protect himself.

Great vid man. Your pointing out Pep's master usage of angles for attacks and defense has been noted by many to include Mike Tyson. Tyson recently said Manny Pacquio's usage of angles against Brandon Rios is reminiscent of Willie Pep. While I like Pacquio I don't think he is on Pep's level with footwork and I don't think this was Tyson's point. Just that however brief it might have been a highly skilled boxer like Manny Pacquio had moments were he resembled one of the true boxing "masters."

Pep is good but manny would kill pep in the ring... manny just too athletically gifted for him and the way manny shifts his weight on every punch I don't think pep would be able to take them shots... maybe if pep was faster but pacquiao too fast for him to keep pacquiao at bay
@Bill-Butcher
@Bill-Butcher 9 жыл бұрын
+Feedback406 Nonsense. Pep was school Pacquiao in the art of boxing. Pep might not have had the body type to go up the weights and be effective the way Pac did but at featherweight were both guys were young and prime, Pep would box the shit of Pacquiao much worse than Morales or Marquez ever did.

Feedback406 as much as I love Pacquaio, I think Pep will give him a boxing lesson. Pacquaio has always struggled against good boxers how much more if it was a great boxer like Willie Pep who is not only defensively great but also has great offense.

+Feedback406 Sanchez is one of my favourite fighters but that's a ridiculous statement. Both were arguably the top 2 featherweights in history and both were master boxers. Sanchez carried more power in his punches and Pep had superior defence and movement. In pure boxing, Willie Pep is as good as there has ever been.

Agree 100%. Thing is nowadays most people want to see brawls and don't necessarily appreciate technical skill. That's why Floyd will never be praised by that audience regardless of his clean and effective counter punching, his masterful footwork and his sublime defence. I've learnt to accept that there is no shortage of ignorant opinionated people in this world. I wonder if they'd also accuse Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard of 'running' too.

I loved the way how he lured his enemy into moving into his fist by tilting to the side. Good stuff but other things like putting the head into the arm pit of the opponent would for example not work with MMA at least (sorry im MMA practictioner). He would be in a Guillotine choke in no time. His footwork reminds me of Muhammad Ali.
@buzzkill808raven2

A lot of what he does wouldn't work in MMA. You could go on and on... Dominick Cruz shows us how Pep's style can apply in the octagon, and I'd say he made a good case for it.

Good vid. If only everybody in the ytbc knew what the greats actually brought to the table then maybe actual skill would be more respected now and boxing would be far more competitive with highly skilled fighters. But knockout dummy fighters and knockout dummy fans have prevailed.

***** Which is a true statement. Let ko's be a conclusion to your skills. Don't go out swinging away looking for the ko with little regard for defensive responsibility. Defense is also a skill. IMO the most telling skill on how good a fighter is. Everybody can throw a punch.

And what can Mayweather do in comparison? Pernell Whitaker knew more than Mayweather (and had a tougher career). Pep didn't duck anyone. In fact, he found his kryptonite in the devastating boxer-puncher, Sandy Saddler - who Pep fought 4 times and lost 3. He fought EVERYONE he could - ending his legendary career with 241 total professional fights. Pep was WAAAAY beyond what Floyd was able to do. Pep actually threw plenty of punches after setting his opponents up with generalship (Mayweather will oftentimes refuse to throw many punches against lesser opposition), used lateral movement & circling, and as the video showed, knew inside-fighting tactics (different than the basic grappling moves). The "Willie-Pep spin" (a move also used by Duran) was brought into the forefront by Pep and named for him. Mayweather didn't even have the spacing control (with his feet) that Pep had while using the entire ring. Actually, old school boxers like Joe Gans, Benny Leonard, Holman Williams, Charley Burley, Kid Chocolate, Tony Canzoneri, Ezzard Charles, etc. were far beyond Mayweather as far as controlling the spacing and timing of their opponent. And they didn't cherry-pick and duck.

I don't disagree that what Floyd does in personal life is fucked up, but I objectively look at a fighter's skills when they're in the ring. When fighters step in the ring, we have to be fair and judge them based solely on their skills. People call Edgar Allen Poe an all-time great poet, even though he banged his13 year-old cousin.

Basically you would hate Willie Pep's fights too. In his fight against Fabela Chavez (you can watch on youtube), some rounds had virtually no action because of Pep's clinches. Just a comment. People overexaggerate everything that relates to Mayweather, his second fight against Maidana really had some excessive clinching. But Pacquiao's fight? Probably Pacquiao clinched as many times in his fight against Brandon Rios (count it!) and until the round 10 in his second fight against Bradley, Pacquiao had clinched 10 times (more than Mayweather did in their fight).
