Heavyweight boxers Muhammad Ali and Oscar Bonavena fought at Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 7, 1970. Ali won the bout, his first at the current Madison Square Garden, through a technical knockout in the 15th round.
***
At the weigh-in, it was Bonavena who took the initiative of indulging in psychological warfare. In broken English, Bonavena shouted to Ali: "You cheekeen...You no go in Army."Continuing with the verbal tirade, Bonavena went on to call Ali a "black kangaroo", indicated that Ali had hygiene problems, and, using an old Sonny Liston line, accused Ali of being a homosexual. Ali was left to making gestures indicating Bonavena was crazy.After the weigh-in,however, Ali began his own psychological attack by turning up unannounced in Bonavena's dressing room and shouting hysterically at his opponent until he was ejected by Bonavena's entourage from the room. On the day of the fight Ali announced:
I've never wanted to whup a man so bad. I'm gonna put some soul on his head. I tell you that the Beast is mine. And tonight he falls in nine."

Ali had only two warm up fights before Fighting Frazier for the title as he was $500,000 in debt due to legal fees. The supreme court had not yet ruled in his favor and he did not know if he was going to prison for 10 years or not. Not fighting for 3 1/2 years, Ali needed to go 15 rounds to regain endurance. Just remember, we never saw a prime Ali as he was just entering his prime when they stripped his title away. He is the greatest of all time, nothing else needs to be said.

You must not study very many other boxers throughout history. Clay was nowhere near the best. He got where he got, by his speed and his ability to run away from his opponents. Once he lost his speed, look at the outcomes of those fights. He had no punching power at all, compared to his contemporaries. He fought dirty, by down punching opponents eyes, in order to cut them up, blind them, and get the fights stopped due to blood. If you want to see the great fighters, watch guys like Joe Louis, Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey. They were true fighters, who had heart and courage. Ali was a coward. He was all about fighting when it paid him millions of dollars. When it came time to do his duty for the country that made him a millionaire, he was a scared little punk. You Ali fans are too much!

Bonavena was a tough cookie. He proved that in his 2 losses to Frazier. He was too slow and awkward to handle Ali's agility and defense. This was far from Ali at his best but 4 years of inactivity takes time to come back from. He was much improved when he got to Frazier even though he lost that one.

Commentators so far off the mark. A weird bias. This is such a biased commentory. And this isn't the only example out there. Maybe it was the Ali/Vietnam thing. Commentators stubbornly referring to him as 'Clay' etc. Ali lands 4, 5, 6, 7 solid head punches, punch after punch after punch, they barely get mentioned. Head shot after head shot by Ali... head-snapping punches any one of which would have put a lesser boxer on the floor. Barely mentioned, if at all. Why was that I wonder? Only Bonavena's occasionally contacting punches get mentioned. And replayed? Ali out manouevers and out-thinks Bonavena, but is classified by the commentators as 'static'..? He was fighting a brawler with a very strong chin. Bonavena could really take a punch. But Ali got it just right. Ahead in points still managed that grand finale! Ali was a very clever boxer. Like a chess player. I don't think the commentators here were aware of quite how clever he was. Ask George Foreman though...

most people don't understand, ali truly did want to punish him in this fight. Ali loves to promote etc.. etc... but oscar really did get way under ali's skin, and once he couldn't take oscar out in the 9th, he just cruised punished and looked to wait till the very end then close. if you pay attention ali looked almost fresh for the 15th, he was throwing bombs - 1st there were some hard straight shots, that shocked oscar, then he hits him with a quick short left hook, leans back away from a counter oscar left hook, and counters that with that 2nd left hook - bomb!! check it out, after that ali's body language backs up everything i'm saying, ali just keeps walking him down, and keeps battering the sea gull out of his jaw!!, at one point the ref has his right hand on ali, as if to keep ali at bay, so ringo can breath, and ali use's his left arm to swipe the refs arm down, and continues to follow oscar to finish him like a boss!! that body language right there says 2 things, 1st he had plenty in the tank he was saving for the 15th, and 2nd ali was a bit pissed off for i think a bunch of reasons, and oscars k.o. was a foregone conclusion. Ali's phycology is complicated, some times he is an angry man in that ring, and although i love him, i do believe towards the 2nd half of his career - he could be a little bit crazy. After the whole vietnam thing, it's easy to understand why! it's like he was fighting the whole world.

Why did Ali not have to go to neutral corner ? Like dempsey?
@paulcarey191
@paulcarey191 7 ай бұрын
tech you do, but after ringo got floored the 2nd time, instead of facing the ref he kept walking away from the ref, and ali just kept circling which is tech not wrong!!! because ringo kept changing the neutral corner by his own movement - i seen this before with boom boom mancini, the 2 times alexis A. knocked him down he did the same thing, - this kind of screws up the dynamic of who goes where, and it's a sign of the end for that fighter. Also the ref did a bad job in this fight with ali, i think he was a bit over whelmed... it's funny you mentioned dempsey, because he's the reason they made that rule to begin with, some yrs after the Willard fight, dempsey himself advocated for a neutral corner with a knock down, and got it in writing for future fights, then in a twist of fate against gene tunney, dempsey screwed himself by NOT going to a neutral corner for 4 seconds, - famous long count!! because he wanted to get at tunney so bad, things happen in that ring that are not always called right, but it gets lost in the moment! and then it's history.@@antoniokasto4293

Maybe because Ali was ahead on points from early in the fight and never fell behind. Even the 'experts' admitted this during the fight, while claiming Ali was in bad shape, not the fighter he used to be, too slow, no movement, blah blah. Then with one punch in the 15th Ali proved the experts wrong and set the record straight. Oscar got up twice, but he was out on his feet from the moment that lone punch scored.

People don’t realise Oscar B was one of them tough sons of B who had a granite chin. One of those who were just naturally so tough like the likes of G.Chavola, Oliver McCal and Ray Merser. So for Mohd Ali to knock him out especially with that beautiful left hook. Shows that when Ali wanted to punch hard he could. Just like that right hand that got both Ron Lyle and Foreman because they both could take a punch on those Iron chins as well as being amongst the most powerful punchers ever

This was the first fight I ever saw. I was 4 years old turning 5 in two weeks. I remember my mother and father talking about whether I should be allowed to watch it or not that afternoon, and I remember my father coming into my room and summoning me to the television that night. He said "Nicky, this is Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all time. He's gonna win." We had popcorn and soft drinks and I sat at the base of his recliner and watched the fight and there was much bonding. When it was over he said, "Don't ever fight another man unless he throws the first punch" and sent me to bed. In retrospect that was probably the deal he made with my mother. Also I will add, on review later in life, all respect to Oscar Bonavena, he had the heart of a champion but not the reach, I would love to have seen a Rocky Marciano-Oscar Bonavena bout when they were both in their prime. This fight was when Ali took his place in my soul, and Bonavena as well. An interesting note from the fight is that Ali's conditioning was in question but ultimately it was Bonavena's conditioning that was found lacking. Not through any lack of effort on his part I'm certain. I'm also certain that despite all the pre-fight bravado, Ali had long-term respect for Bonavena.

Ali hadn’t had a chance to catch his breath yet and cosell has him analyzing the fight and taking phone calls from Frazier. Damn bro, let the guy enjoy his victory. Howie is literally stirring the “drama stew” from ringside and in the ring. But I’ll admit, I really miss these days. I saw Ali fight 2 exhibition matches in Vancouver Canada coming back from his exile😢 George Chuvallo defended his heavy weight title of Canada. I think most came to see Ali!!! As Ali left the ring many people rushed to get his autograph. Ali was signing so I got in line and it was like there was an aura around him I couldn't believe I was so close to Ali it was quite a thrill for me even though I was in my mid 20's. I got closer to Ali and as he was signing I reached out and touched his right shoulder! He stopped signing and looked at me with an inquisitive look and his presence was amazing he was a lot taller than my 6 foot frame and as he looked at me I took ny hand away and said sorry and I handed him the fight card that came with the admission. He signed my card M Ali and I still have that autograph and it's still a thrill now when I'm almost 73 yrs old. I also have Sylvestor Stallones auto but Ali's auto is the best. My friends and I went to all his closed circuit fights! Those were exciting days. He has to go down as the greatest boxer of all time. He was smart, fast, good looking, intelligent, charismatic, a mover like no other and that jab took out so many. Ali was the greatest and will be remembered forever that way! 3 times the champion who has done that ??? RIP Ali rest in peace the show is over but the memory lives on in the anals of time ❤😊

Mohammed Ali was the greatest after all he went through . He refused to go to Vietnam . Because he didn't see anything the Vietnamese people did to him. Also during the 1960's many African Americans were mistreated. ( 1.) Separate bath rooms for white people and African Americans . ( 2.) African Americans had to sit in the back of a city bus. ( 3.) Getting to even go to a public school was hard for African American people in the 1960's . ( 4.) Getting regular jobs was hard for African Americans back in the 1960's . ( 5.) Even buying a house for African Americans was hard to do. The white people wanted all African American people to live in the ghetto or run down apartments or low income housing . ( 6.) So then came the Vietnam War .Lots of white people ran off to Canada . Mohammed Ali had all his boxing titles taken from him. Because he was pending going to prison. For refusing to fight in Vietnam . ( 7.) It wasn't until years later sending American troops to fight in the Vietnam War was all based on a lie. This is correct President Johnson sent : 58,000 American soldiers, Marines, Sailors , and Airforce to their unjustified deaths in Vietnam based on a lie. The North Vietnamese did not attack U.S. Navy Ships in the Golf of Tonkin . This tape recording with President Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara . So supposedly the need to sent American troops to Vietnam was to stop the spread of Communism . Note: Vietnam is still Communist . It is a country slowly prospering even though the entire country is still communist. Vietnam being all communist has not effected American lives. Plus American veterans are allowed to visit Vietnam as tourists . Yet President Johnson wanted to create a second Pearl Harbor as a excuse to sent American troops to fight and die in Vietnam. Why ? So President Johnson could win American hearts and minds to get re-elected . Sadly hundreds of American troops were coming home with missing arms and legs . Many were coming back home to America in body bags. A war based on a lie . A lie from President Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. These two criminals sent 58, 000 American troops to die in a war that was all based on a lie. Years later after the Vietnam War. Certain American Presidents apologized to Famous Boxing Legend : Mohammed Ali. He changed his name . Because the name Clay was from a black Slave owner. So Mohammed Ali is a America and he legally changed his name. We can change our names in America. This is legal. So what we change our names to is our name. Mohammed Ali has inspired many people to never give up and to fight for what you believe is right. With out hurting other people . We can stand up for what is right with out hurting other people. Because even Jesus Christ said ," Love your neighbor as your self. " Sadly President Johnson was only thinking about his name in lights. He wanted to be glorified as a war president . He also sent American troops to the Vietnam War by force called the Draft. Forcing American troops to die based on a lie. Yet, if we do our home work : President Johnson wanted to make his friends from Texas in the oil business richer men . Because it was suspected there was Crude Oil in the Golf of Tonkin . Plus all the money rich friends of President Johnson could make on Defense Contracts . With Agent Orange and Napalm . These two deadly items were dropped on the enemy and American troops . However : President Johnson and Secretary of Defense : Robert McNamara did not care. They just wanted to become rich and popular . As American troops in Vietnam were getting shot and blown up. This was because these American were forced to go die in a war based on a lie. Would you want your sons to be forced to go die in a war based on a lie? Think about that .

I think Ali was glad to get the rounds in after a long lay off. A very flat performance. Ali doesn't get the credit for being a puncher, but when he planted his feet and timed it, he could generate serious KO power. Bonavena was a tough durable fighter.

A veil was placed over all in attendance, as invisible punches bewildered Buenivida, though first confident, after round one Ringo knew what was truly Great. His 4 Punches that landed the entire fight, cost him 2 punches back along with a hundred others. The best contender at the time, everyone advised Ali not to fight Ringo, too strong. Like a King 🤴🏿 he with all Boldness comes out toe to toe. This deflated Buenividas' ego immediately. What was this Man called Ali, gifted by God? His purpose was to show Ringo something amazing and for his inflated persona was to taste canvas for the first time. Thanks for your post. I call that fight, 'Ali and the invisible Punch.'
