I've said this before, but John Cazale was an underrated actor. Just look at the movies he's been in. The Godfather.(1,2) Dog Day Afternoon. The Conversation. The Deer Hunter. All great films. R.I.P. Mr. Cazale. Gone too soon.

Fredo had been warned by Michael to never take sides against the family ever again right after the meeting with Moe Greene had finished unceremoniously several years prior to the missteps that nearly cost Michael and his wife their lives and the very existence of the Corleone family. Unfortunately, Fredo's ego and resentment of Michael got the better of his glaringly weak and dangerously stupid persona when he was approached by Johnny Ola, who was able to play on Fredo's psyche and manipulate him into a situation that was never going to end well for him. Look how easily Michael manipulated Fredo into confessing everything, including how he really felt about his kid brother in his heart of hearts, and just how far involved he ended up being in his betrayal. Based on this, Michael had only two choices: kill Fredo, which he tasked Al Neri with doing, or banish him in a way roughly similar to how Napoleon was exiled to St Helena, which could have proven to be problematic over time.

Fredo’s ego got him killed. He didn’t know how good he had it. He didn’t have to be involved with the dangerous side of the family business and was basically paid to entertain and take care of basic tasks. I would love to be wealthy and spend my days doing easy jobs, sleeping with women, and goofing off. I wouldn’t want the stress and responsibility of being a boss and couldn’t care less if anyone respected me or not.

This is what I like about the Corleone Family. Sunny was smart enough but didn’t have the temperament. Fredo had good direction but he wasn’t nearly smart enough to handle the more personalized side of business. Mike had the smarts, temperament and direction. He was basically Vito reborn. And thats why it saddened Vito so much. He knew how capable he was and the more capable the more dangerous it gets

It’s unfortunate that Fredo was a doomed man no matter what. If Michael did decide to spare fredo he would be hunted by all of his enemies and the feds. Even if he were to hide Fredo indefinitely there is no guarantee Fredo would last long because he likes to party and socialize. Fredo was a weak link and even though he didn’t mean any actual harm he still proved to be liability towards the family and especially Michael. Also Fredo wouldn’t live with himself on almost getting Michael and his family killed so even if he spared him he would probably take his own life both out of fear or the guilt of what he did.
@misterpinkandyellow74Ай бұрын
He did mean harm though
@masterzombie161Ай бұрын
@ no he didn’t, he didn’t know they wanted to kill Michael. Fredo thought it would be a business opportunity to gain respect. Now indirectly caused harm would be more accurate because at the end of the day he’s a simple man not really meant for the life they live. He’s a party guy who entertains guests, unfortunately it’s his biggest weakness and it even gives him away as the guy who told Michael’s enemies where he lived.

The way people dressed back then is very classy. Much better than the slobs of today. I guess Michael was always ready for an impromptu meeting or something.
