one of my favorite movies of all time, but did you catch the editing mistake? When Maximus is on the horse and slits the throats you can see blood on the sword, next scene when it's just him on horse and he puts his sword in the air, no blood on sword....

The scene when Maximus says put me in front of my men and see where their loyalty lies is so awesome you so it in this scene and they arent even his actual soilders yet in heartbeat they surround him when threatened. Would have love to see him actually get to his troops

@srb2591 the most heartbreaking moment of the whole movie is just after Maximus meets his servant Cicero at night and you think is his army there? Then Cicero is shot full of arrows and that hope is dashed instantly. Bummer.

The deep subtle irony casual poked at is under Commodius, things are exactly opposite of how they're suppose to be. Scipio's legions were dishonored, exiled veterans while Hannibal's forces were seen through an Exotic African lens. Considering the gladiators legionary gear on, flip flopping the names of the two opposing forces would have made this whole battle scene make sense.
