The first part was accurate, the second is questionable. The West is witnessing the fall of Rome 2.0. We don't know the difference between a man and a woman. Men are identifying as woman and can compete in the same sport. We saw in the last Olympics boxing men fighting against women. The East is rising again. The sunrise on the east. The sunsets on the west. We are not gone, however the shift of world power is to the East.

Romans charging forward on modern horses in a hilly, muddy spruce monoculture, accompanied by a German shepherd jumping through fire, while hundrets of legionnaires are fighting man-to-man without command: Had this actually taken place like shown in this battle scene, Maximus would not have shouted "Roma victor" but "Roma est devicta" - provided he would have had survived... The legionnaires of the Roman legions (legion, latin: "legere", meaning: the selected, the chosen) avoided dueling, because the risk of injury and death was high and therefore uneconomical. Roman legionnaires were in fact valuable assets for their legati (legatus, latin: commander, the one sent by the emperor) because they were cost-intensively skilled, resilient and disciplined elite soldiers (sort of ancient Navy SEALS) who were trained to handle harsh conditions (35 kg of equipment, daily stages of 30 km in five hours) and who could not have been replaced easily in a military campaign abroad in due time. Every victory based on their skills guaranteed and multiplied the fame of their commander when the campaign was over and he returned back to Rome. Therefore avoiding losses of legionnaires was crucial. Instead of fighting individually, the Roman legionnaires used to attack most of the time in military formations, for example in a so called "tortoise formation" (latin: "testudo"), comparable to a human tank, protecting the legionnaires with their shields on their sides and over their heads against missile fire, arrows or rocks. Because uneven landscapes made military formations difficult, the Roman legions preferred to fight on flatland; elsewhere their formations got highly vulnerable (see "The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest" AD 9, where three roman legions - around 20.000 legionnaires - got annihilated by the german tribes under their leader Arminius in an ambush in the forest of Teutoburg in the german state of North Rhine-Westphalia). The sword ("gladius") was not designed as a duel weapon that was swung like a machete but a thrust weapon. What is also completely missing in this battle is the first wave of testudoes in which the legionnaires were equipped with pila. These pila (pilum, a heavy javelin) were designed to be thrown against the shields of the enemy where they got stuck due to the destinctive design of the javelin tip. The weight of the pilum and the fact that the first third of it was made from soft metal that bent under the weight of the shaft after getting stuck pulled the shield downward, rendering it useless. Spruce grew originally high up in the Alps before it became commercial timber; german forests of the time were dense, deciduous forests and consisted mainly of beeches. Horses back then were much smaller and compact, more like ponies. Galopping on horses through rough forest terrain leads inevitably to stumbling and falling. The german sheperd must have been a time travelling dog because this breed of dog wasn't bred before the 1890ies. A dog never jumps through fire voluntarily. Training a dog jump through fire is a cruel and unneccessary trick because the risk of injury is extremely high for the animal. Catapults (latin: "onager") shown here on muddy, hilly forest terrain would have been useless because due to their size and weight they would have simply gotten stuck and impossible to maneuver. This is not about nitpicking, but all those obvious errors could have been easily avoided. Ridley Scott is a great director, therefore I don't understand why he didn't consult historians and military experts before filkming a movie like "Gladiator" on a 103 million US dollar budget. The result is of course highly entertaining - but it is nothing but a fantasy movie.😅
