So I’m confused once they fired they guns why didn’t they have a shield wall while they reload
@Andrew-cp3ki4 ай бұрын
@@TPF443 If you’re wondering why they are fighting in the open, then it’s because of the “customs” that armies used to fight with. However, it is important to know that historically, the Colonists used more guerrilla tactics to defeat the British. Also look way back to the Napoleonic War, and even the American Civil War. They used to fight this way to maximize the damage per volley, since muskets were inaccurate and had a long reload time.
@senpainoticeme96754 ай бұрын
@@TPF443 armies at that age have cannons, so forming a shield wall only exposes a large portion of their troops to cannon fire. Not to mention that in this era of linear formation, forming a shield wall would shorten their lines and expose them from flanking (enfilade) fire from their opponent.

@TeamQuiltzYT5 ай бұрын
You're failing to consider the fact that technology wasn't as advanced back then, like the person said above being in big groups would provide better defense against cavalry, communication would also be a lot more easier since they didn't have radios back then and guess what? Muskets are single-shot and take a pretty long while to reload one especially under fire, if you lined up and shot in a volley you would just have more firepower.
@brunswickgaming18155 ай бұрын
Stupid? You mean practical?
@HamburgerMan-ch1od5 ай бұрын
Yeah it is stupid. Why would they do that? Well, nobody was that stupid to do that back then. This is NOT how armies fought back then. At least the distance they would shoot each other at. Engagements would start around 200 yards from one another. Not 70 feet. At that point you might as well just charge.

I also remember watching this movie back in History Class in my final year of Middle School and the whole class including myself erupted and we were clapping when Benjamin killed Tavington (one of the most satisfying villain deaths in movie history.) This is one of my favorite historically accurate war movies of all time. @TeamQuiltzYT5 ай бұрын
It was just a lot more effective that way in their time, grouping up together provided better defense against cavalry and you'd have more firepower grouping up like that and also that communicating was a lot more easier this way, I also want to mention that while muskets were inaccurate they weren't as inaccurate as people make them out to be, a musket could fire about to 150 studs if I remember correctly.
@Mixer29045 ай бұрын
@@TeamQuiltzYT yes but later more advanced muskets could be quite accurate like in civil war with invention of the minie ball and other stuff, muskets became more accurate that's why you have people in civil war battles taking cover, but during revolution and earlier muskets were much more inaccurate and their range was poor.
