A pretty common thing actually in punk or pop punk rather, indie, postpunk etc. to really find your sound around this sort of riff built around 2 notes at a time. Many bands get lost in the ether because of this trick… only a few stick out and Skiba is one that does it interestingly enough to still stand out, maybe because of his cool voice and incredible lyricism.

I love skibas riffs, I wish blink still had skiba in it with Tom. The two of them writing songs together with blink would be nothing less than amazing. I get that blinks a trio but just imagining them all together gives me chills. Blink182 needs to do a side project with skiba.. I wanna hear it before I’m dead lol.

I love Skiba but I don't think blink was a good fit. Skiba couldn't really do what he does best in blink and, without Tom, it kinda sounded like a different band that was inspired by blink rather than the actual blink. Just my opinion obviously.

Bro I wish Tom just kept finding aliens tbh. The new album is terrible. It was auto tuned and over produced. California was downright amazing but Nine is literally underrated. I went back to that album and was blown away how he managed to mature Mark Hoppus. Tom had been trying to get Mark to write mature songs since Angels vs Airwaves creation. Here comes Skiba and they produce an amazing pop punk Emo album that went unnoticed

Private Eye doesn’t sound quite right. I always play it on the top two strings. E/A - O/10 6x, O/9 2x, O/12 4x, O/10 4x, 7/9 8x, 8/10 8x.

I play that same kind of riff all the time but in 2 note arpeggio form. Always a good layer over power chords and works great if you are shitty lead guitar player.

@@kevincollins8620I completely agree with that man, if I keep using the droning technique is because it does sound beautiful over the rhythm lines i come up with, it just works. I was just taking a jab at myself as I'm the furthest from a technical player. And yes, I've jammed both as a bassist and a rhythm guitarist with lead players 10 times technically better than me, and they cant find a good lead line to play over my and the drummers rhythms. They either over play with lots of tapping and sweep picking or just bend everything and tremolo things.

Just my usual Axe Fx preset, which is based on a Mesa & Marshall sound mixed together. The Mesa is mostly for the distortion, and the Marshall helps to fill in the mids. Hope that helps!

Step one: Choose Amaj or F#Min Step two: Down pick out of step ones chord off the arpeggio. Step three: Palm mute chosen key chord progression during verse. Step four: Open up with full power chords in the opposite of what you chose for step one for chorus. Bridge optional.

Have you also noticed the one vocal melody that Skiba often reuses? I love Is This Thing Cursed? but the overuse of this melody is really apparent to me. See the verses of Krystalline and Heart Attacks, for example. The same melody can be heard in the track Vienna from his side project. I’m sure there’s others.
