I remember the conservative talking points at the time said that interracial dating wasn't normal in America and liberal media was trying to normalize something that was abnormal for most Americans. As a kid growing up in a diverse metropolitan area, Shawn and Angela's relationship looked normal to me and I started questioning why conservatives didn't want that. It was honestly the beginning of my understanding of conservative "values" when it comes to "purity". You can't unsee that. While interracial marriage is more accepted by conservatives now, we still see them fighting for gender purity, and certainly can't forget those years of them fighting for the "sanctuary of marriage". It all comes back to purity morals that are patriarchal and racist.

It’s so interesting to me that the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s had such a myriad of wonderful representation for Black women and girls and until recently there was major regression. You had characters like Angela; bohemian, beautiful intelligent and carefree, Lisa Turtle, Ashley Banks, Laura Winslow, Moesha Mitchell etc. for the last couple of decades Black women onscreen are either invisible by erasure, cartoonishly stereotypical, or a prop/foil to all non poc characters. One of the reasons growing up in this era was unmatched. Black women and girls had the opportunity to be fully realized and fully fleshed out characters onscreen. We were depicted, in all our nuances as human.

Why do you think this stopped?

@@WatchTheClipsFilm-TvBecause the so called progress Hollywood really only want us around when we fit into their own preconceived stereotypes. Thats why there’s no room for the prude, wealthy, nerdy, or conservative black woman, just the slutty, poor, ghetto, ill-behaved ones that they keep cramming down our throats in music and television. It’s extremely annoying, feels like our reputation as women are always under attack.
@mtblaho5 ай бұрын
@@WatchTheClipsFilm-TvI think part of the reason that this stopped is because in an effort to bring about equality of characters people started focusing on all the things you couldn’t do with black characters because it will be seen as racist. And while that has merit and is admirable it always makes some people skittish so that resort to making flat characters that have no flaws etc which makes them uninteresting and not relatable. So people lose interest. So then the writers and show runners start believing that people don’t want to see black women characters when the truth is we want to see fleshed out characters. It didn’t center around them being an interracial couple, just two people that really loved each that happened to be from different racial backgrounds. Trina as Angela with her natural hair, styled hair, with lines, and having her own brand of humour and personality is ever a statement. The character is an icon not only for BMW but for TV history, and Trina is a hero for many, including me. I loved her vulnerability with her family when her father was introduced and I remember hearing the audience reaction when she finally told Shawn she loved him. If they could fly through the ceiling, they would. Same here. That they ended is realistic, yes, but I hear many fans say that their relationship is the most realistic one on the show. There can only be one Cory and Topanga yes because there is only one Cory and one Topanga. But Shawn and Angela were different, and fans, many fans, wanted that too. They did work, and they pulled each other through things, and the way they respected one another, reconciled, and put one before the other is an example to many. I like GMW and their characters too. But them writing Angela like that left a bitter taste in my mouth. Of course, Trina pulled it off nicely and you still see Shawn's care for her come through. "Put more of you in the world" was his answer when she asked him if she should have children, and yeh, I cried. But just for what their relationship could have been, but for what her continued character could have been in the show.

One thing people get wrong is the "life long crush" thing with Topanga. Season 1 just had her as the "weird" girl Cory went to school with. They retconned a lot after season 1, like how his sister disappeared for several seasons. I always loved Trina's character on the show, she was like a slap-in-the-face the show really needed. And they really did do her character wrong. I've only seen a few episodes of Girl Meets World, and what I saw did not live up to the original, much like other shows they tried to do follow ups to. I can't speak for the people that identified with her, nor as someone who could identify with her on race and ethnicity, but I have to say, her being on the show and them not making a big show of her race being contrast with the rest of the cast helped normalizing such aspects in current shows. It gives us a positive look at what a world could be like without the hate so many people jump into (basically conservatives). In one aspect that some might not think about, that I think is important, they normalized her existence in a non-scifi show, meaning it didn't have to be some fantasy, other worldly life that in many ways seems impossible to live in, they gave us a look at our own society and living in the here and now (mostly) without the predjudices we otherwise see every day. Or if needed to put simply, they didn't have to stick her on a space ship named the Enterprise, for her character to be taken seriously.

As a woman of color who grew up with predominantly white friends and partners (honestly purely because we shared the same interests) I don’t remember race coming up as a topic very much at all. I was just one of the girls. We were the “Blondtourage”lmao I know that’s not the case across the board, but the “color-blindness” they’re referring to isn’t too far a cry from what real people experience. With all that being said, the real issues and inequality she experienced behind the screen is still just as important to acknowledge and talk about because real people experience that too.

I'm 36 and my youngest child is 8, oldest is 18. Both boys. I remember my eldest and his cousins tween years being pretty similar to mine. Well, minus some of the wilder stuff I got into as a 90s latchkey kid. My 8 year old and nephews are also into the same stuff more or less as his older brother was into (video games, Legos, Pokémon cards, anime, etc.) I wonder if this is a more tween girl oriented issue.

Jacobs was a racist. Girl Meets World should have made Maya biracial, a child of Shawn and Angela, Angela having died in child birth, Shawn distraught and becomes an absent father, which explains why the Matthews care so much and would give Shawn an arc.

Why does Angela have to die?
@ZeroXMarquis3 ай бұрын
Ideally, she wouldn't. However, I was working within the confines that they were. At the time, Rider Strong didn't want to reprise the role at all, so they would need to explain Shawn's absence in a way that could be redeemed and legt the Maya character somewhat broken. Had they known he would guest later on and throughout, they could have just said he was away at work and kept Angela around.

Topanga is a complete hypocrite. Shaming men in harassment episode for the same Actually less forceful behavior then Forcing a kiss on the boy locked to a locker and flat said don't kiss me

Why is it token black actresses just HAVE to find "micro aggressions" to tweet about? I wonder what Anne Frank would make of this "struggle"?
