Very well put. We currently have a neutered boar and a female. When our kids were living with us, we had a bonded pair of boys. After 8 years, our oldest piggy passed away and we found ourselves missing piggies. We rescued a boar (who we had our vet neuter), and a few months later we rescued a female piggy (yes- it took a while to find a female as all that was available at local rescues were boys). They get along very well with each other and they live in a 10' X10' C & C cage with a second floor wing and many hidys, cozy beds and a hammock. I use your hay log. They love it.

I am glad that you told people the difference in sexes of Guinea pigs. I’ve heard so many people tell people that they were TOLD the piggies were the same sex. If people want to have baby Guinea pigs then adopt them. There are a lot of babies out there. I went to get an adult pig and they had let them out to free roam and couldn’t find it. I ended up with a baby Shelty. I love both of my piggie girls.

A comment on cage size. We started out with 2 female piggies and a 10 sq ft cage, it seemed huge when our two girls were just babies but once they hit about 8 months I feel like it was too crowded, I mean they seemed content but I knew they could use more room to run! So we built a DIY C&C cage (thanks for your tutorial video, I couldn't have figured it out without that!), we built it as large as the space we had available is, it comes out to 28.5 sq feet, when we moved our two girls in it seemed gigantic, LOL, almost too big. Then we started hearing that all the shelters are full and the rescues were having to turn away piggies so, since we had the extra space and resources we decided to adopt 2 more! It was amazing to see our girls REALLY come out of their shells in a small herd, we couldn't be happier with our decision, it's so fun just watching their social dynamics and they seem SO much happier now! Anyways, my point was that, we have 4 and one of our girls has quite the attitude, I couldn't imagine them in an enclosure half the size, I feel like there wouldn't even be enough room for each of their houses and I don't know about other piggies but our girls gotta each have their own house, lol. I guess what I'm saying is that I think 16 sq ft is even not enough room for 4. Just my opinion though, I'm not a specialist like you guys are! I agree with you, I don't think "the minimum" is enough, I don't even think the "preferred" is. Love you videos and work, keep it up! ❤

My bf was looking for a friend for his little buddy who had lost his friend. He was going to go to a pet store and I was like eek here watch Scotty's video's and then he decided to take advantage of the fact that there was so many piggies in need of a home off of the group's we're on and his daughter and roommate fell in love with one and brought him home and both him and I panicked a little but they introduced the two and they were super chill with each other they did their normal sniffing and then they started playing with eachother and then they shared veggies nicely and actually cuddle with eachother in their hidies. I was just like you just experienced A miracle lol

Good for you for not going to a pet store. I think if more people boycotted pet shops and supported rescues there wouldn't be any demand for unethical breeding farms, unwanted pregnancies and piggies living in poor conditions. It's basic supply and demand.

Hi Scotty, don’t forget to mention that baby piggies can get through the squares of the c & c cages. I found that out the hard way lols. Luckily he was on floor level at the time. I had to double up the panels to make the squares smaller on the main cage for a while. I have two boys. One so chilled and laid back he could be a buddah, and the other one, as you said of one of yours, is a real jerk. They are chalk and cheese, but love them both equally. Thanks for another great video. xx

I got two guinea pigs a year ago. One came from petco and the other from a shady pet store. Both were in bad shape. One had a respiratory infection and the other one was so emaciated I thought he wasn't gonna make it. I had never owned guinea pigs before because it was my girlfriend that got me to buy them and the only thing i could think to do was to watch videos and try to make them better. Thanks to your amazing videos I was able to nurse them back to health and provide them with the care that they deserve. The vet told me that I have the healthiest pigs that they've seen in 20 years. Keep it up Scotty because your videos really save lives. My best friends are happy and healthy because of you. We all know that there are countless animals suffering right now and all we can do is keep trying our best to save them. I just wanted to say thanks for everything you've done for us.

I have two bonded boys, got them when they were about a month old. They will be 5 years old soon. They are my little potatoes. After they pass, I will get boys again. They are just little joys. I love the personalities . They have a huge area for just the pair and it is nice when they need space. I would not introduce a third into this pair as they are super mellow and it is a nice vibe.

I have three boys, they're brothers and they get along great! One of them is a little bossy, but they never fight or chatter. I added them to my family a little over a year ago when they were just a few months old. I've learned so much from this channel, including how lucky I am to have three happy brothers who get along. They have a 2x4 c&c cage with a loft that they use all the time and they eat high-quality hay, pellets and veggies. Thanks Scotty for showing the right way to do things!

We have 3 boys. Not sure if 2 is related. We got them from the same ppl. The other 1, no. Sometimes they seem ok w/ each other. Sometimes, no. They have their own room, own things, & plenty of space. Not sure what the problem is. ...We used to always keep them in the same room w/ us or just near by. So, maybe now that they're downstairs, & its not as convenient for more close monitoring, guess they go wild on each other sometimes. I dont get them. 1 moment they're in the same hidey, acting as a team, the other, fighting over 1 thing even tho everything is split evenly. They all have completely different personalities. We have a pitt & a bird too & I swear, all the pets r jealous of each other and 😔🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ idkw. Bc I, at least, dont show favoritism. Also, I purposely married my husband so I wouldn't hafta touch my boars peckers. I really didn't. But I make him do those dude choirs anyways. I just simply feel wrong doing that. I can do everything else. That, not so much. 💡🤭😊Which reminds me, I need to remind him to look at their "poop sack things" too. (I know, I make up my own words. But I forgot the terminology. But he'll know what I'm talking about, ha).

Was watching this video with my Buddy, and the idea that people were looking out for guinea pigs got him so excited he peed all over. I have two pairs, one male and one female. I bought one of the C&C environments where there are two 2x4 cages on top of each other. The boys live down on the ground floor while the girls are in the penthouse. I've never had any issues, but of course I keep them apart.

I have three separate boars who all each live in 2x4 cnc cages, kept next to each other. It’s taken over the whole room and all three are cleaned out every single day. It’s a lot of work and I wish I had known what I now know about piggies but I previously had four boys all living together with not so much as a single teeth chatter…. now I realise that was a weird miracle! Anyways I love my boys dearly and despite the work, I’m privileged to be their piggy mum ♥️ Shout out to Horse, Makemake and Amos ♥️

Im adopting two female piggies from my local rescue (Mending Spirits animal rescue) in Minnesota. I purchased a 2x5 c&c cage and cant wait to give these girls a good life, compared to what they have had. Apple was found in a dumpster, and Coconut was neglected by her first owner who was an animal hoarder. Im currently setting their cage up with everything a guinea pig could ever want and need, and I cant wait to see their reaction when I bring them home. I might cry.

I always love your videos, I'm a guiene owner and had 3 boys in one cage 2 girls in another, originally the plan was to get him nudered but then we ended up rescuing more boys that were in the back of the pet store and nobody was buying them plus they couldn't be kept with the babies so of course we could not leave them . But all 3 ended up getting along for about 3.5/4 years and then one boy died ,he was the biggest and leader of the room woth him gone the entire rooms dynamics changed 😢 no more happy chirping for food 😢...but they did very well as a trio but they all started ad babies and grew up today .

Interesting video! I started my guinea pig journey almost 6 years ago with 2 boys and added 1 1/2 years later a neutered boar to the group. We had some drama, because one of my boys probably thought that the neutered boy was a female (because they had only known intact males so far) and started to react very aggressive towards his friend. So we ended up getting my 'aggressive' boy neutered as well, separated him for 2 weeks from the others and reintroduced him. Everything went well and the trio lived very peaceful together. Sadly my former 'aggressive' (he was actually very sweet) boy passed away 2 years later and I tried to bond a new neutered male from the shelter with my 2 remaining boys. The new boy didn't like my intact male and reacted very aggressive towards him. So we had to return him. The shelter assumed that the little guy only reacted aggressive towards my boy, because he was the only intact boy. He had no issue with my other neutered boy or with his neutered dad with which he had lived (and was later adopted out) so far. I ended up neutering my last intact boy, since there really seemed to be an issue, and introduced a neutered baby pig (4 weeks) to my pair. Needles to say that everything went well. My baby boy was properly raised and socialized by my 2 older boys. 6 weeks ago one of my older boys suddenly and sadly passed away and I adopted 2 new neutered boys. The introduction with all 4 boys was hard, because my two new boys (4-5 months old) haven't had the best socialization so far. Both are rescues and neither I nor our rescue know their previous living conditions. But the scars and marks on their ears suggest that they had a rough life. Both of them were very insecure and stressed during the bonding and reacted therefore aggressive and snappy towards my boss pig (my baby boy who is 1 1/2 years now). But my boss piggy learned a lot from my former boss pig and managed the whole situation like a champion. It has been now 3 weeks and the new boys are calming down a lot and all four are slowly becoming friends. So from my experience, you can have a group of boys as long as you follow some 'rules'. I would definitely say, that neutering, a good socialization (meaning having one or more social and at least 1 1/2 years old males raising a young pig and teaching him conflict resolution behavior until he is at least a year old), a lot of space (around 1 square meter per pig), patience (a lot of owners separate their fighting piggies to early) and experience (knowing when fighting and some bites can be tolerated and when it's time to separate them) is key. It is also easier to introduce boys, who have experience living in groups, into new groups (there are even studies confirming this), because their hormones differentiate from boys who live in pairs. A boy who lives with another male has a higher chance of survival when he is the alpha. So his hormones adapt towards a more dominant and aggressive behavior. A male who lives in a group on the other hand has a higher chance of survival when he lives inside the heard. So he doesn't take the risk of getting kicked out of the group by being too dominant or aggressive. It is also scientifically proven that guinea pigs can adapt their hormones to both situation during their whole life. So the hormones of a male, who has lived in a group so far, will change after a month when paired up with only 1 other male and vice versa. A lot of boys fall apart once they reach their hormonal stage. During this time it is especially important to have an older and social boss guinea pig who can teach the young ones how to solve conflicts without fighting, respect boundaries and face the consequences if they cross them. It is the same with humans. You can't have children raising themselves. They need adults to teach them manners and how to live peacefully in a society. It's the same with guinea pigs! Social behavior isn't something that humans or social animals are born with. It is something that everyone has to learn during their childhood from social adults!

The important thing to remember is that all piggies are different so a situation which works well for some, won't work for others. I adopted 6 (unneutered) boys all of whom get along very well. Most of the time they are in stable pairs, but they also have a large (8 sq metre) outdoor run they can all share as one herd in warm weather. As far as my boys go, as long as they have plenty of room and enough water bottles/food bowls there aren't any issues due to being territorial or possessive. It helps that they have all grown up together from pups and I've been very careful to pair them up so there is a definite dominant/submissive heirarchy. Issues tend to arise when similar personalities/sizes are paired up and there is pressure for conflict to sort out the pecking order. Don't be afraid to have males, but be careful with giving them opportunity for conflict - don't make them argue over females, space or food/water. Always give them the opportunity to keep their distance and escape trouble if they need to.

I have a neutered boy and 4 girls, all living together in a herd in a 2x7 C&C. In my experience, neutered boys are good at keeping the peace between the girls, especially when their hormones play up. Here in The Netherlands many rescues have neutered boys and you can bring your girl piggies to the rescue for a date, so it's very easy to find a neutered boy if you're looking for one.

So refreshing!! Great info! I wish everyone could hear this! Especially about boys and girls in the same room. Also I have noticed a trend going on with bonding guinea pigs. People are doing scent swapping and introducing (Piggies) with bars in between and I’m seeing that it just amps up the anxiety before the actual bonding session. I’m sorry I get a little bit upset because I’m noticing a couple channels one channel in particular is on their first round of (Piggies) and thinking they could give all this different advice and it’s not at all accurate. And why do people keep advising more toys for their guinea pig cages? I loved your video on guinea pig toys equals more tunnels! Guinea pigs do not play with toys and I don’t care if people wanna put toys in their guinea pig cage but if somebody’s doing a cage reaction don’t tell someone with a perfectly awesome cage they need to put more toys in their guinea pig cage I mean who do they think they are really. Some channels are taking step backwards and all the work you guys are doing to send out accurate information to Guinea Pig’s. I wish people would show their guinea pig channels but don’t give advice just show there (Piggies) and have a good time. It is totally counterintuitive to try and help other people when they Themselves are just learning. Thank you for your video Scotty. I’m always recommending your channel.

My crazy Abyssinian female is alone because she will chase and pester another piggies till they are scared. My two other females are bonded been together since 8 weeks old. My dominant female of the 2 acts up at times but then they are snuggling together in there dome. They have the love hate relationship and cannot live without each other. The single female is right next to them watching them . All 7 of my piggies are in the same room and the boys are ok with the girls no boys getting worked up over there girls in the room. They live together and shake the bars together for food in harmony

I foster for a charity and have all sorts of boy/girl combos. I have a herd of girls (in a very large pen) who I have added to slowly. Adding a new girl or girls into that group is pretty straight forward and bonding when you have a big group is normally easy and pretty uneventful. I have a newly neutered boy who I will add to the group once it's safe to do so (a few weeks post neuter so he can't make any of the girls moms!) Adding a (neutered) boy to a girl group usually stops any "handbag behaviour" amongst the girls.even when any are hormonal and therefore moody! In my foster room I have boy/boy pairs-( as Scotty said usually mellow and closely bonded) and neutered boy/girl pairs. Luckily having girls around doesn't upset the bonded boy pairs and I don't have any problems. I know this isn't always the case but I.ve just been very lucky.

They are all in one room as we also have a cat and I have to keep all of the piggies in a separate room, and I'm starting to think that part of the reason i'm struggling to bond them is because I have girls and boys in the same room. I've only had success bonding my neutered boar who just passed away a few weeks ago, leaving his female cage mate alone. I want them all to have friends, but even my females don't want to get along. I was hoping to have at least all my females together in one herd, but every time i try to introduce the girls, a fight ends up breaking out.

Ooo! Comment on females vrs male! I agree with you, I can see how two males could be more consistently chill than females. Female guinea pigs go into heat once a month for a couple days and they drive eachother absolutely nuts on those days, some girls are worse than others in this way. We have a herd of 4 and two of them get pretty bothered when they are in heat, one goes around trying to hump all the others and irritating them (she is the boss pig though so no one tries to fight her over it thankfully) and our other girl, Stella, literally storms around the cage rumbling ALL DAY, lol, for that day or two the other 3 will ALWAYS be on the opposite side of the enclosure from Stella and when they hear her rumbling getting closer they all scurry to the other side of the enclosure. 😂 Think 4 girls living together, it's like women when they're on their periods, it's actually quite funny. Our other 2 girl's aren't as extreme about it, Sage likes her space during those days, will rumble a little more if someone wants to share her house but she's still pretty chill and our last girl, Maple, is still a baby so I we shall find out how she is going to act when that time comes, hopefully she's more like Sage and less like Stella and Page 😂

Hey Scotty, as a new Guinea Pig keeper I appreciate your videos. I got a single 3 month old male from a rescue and I was wanting to get him a friend. The same rescue got a litter of 3 2 week old piggies not too much later with 2 males and 1 female. I took the 2 males to live with my 1 older male. After getting the younger pups wheeled off of the bottle we had a meet & greet it was clear that they all liked each other. Now I've got 2 4 week old brothers with a 4 month old male. The older on is very protective of the younger 2 and even shares treats but is certainly the dominant one. I feel like my 3 male piggies are socially healthy now but should I be concerned about how they will develop as they all mature since none are fully mature yet? Thanks.

Hi Scotty. Your videos are great! I'm about to adopt my first guinea pig. I have been told by the rescue that he has to be adopted alone as they have tried to bond him with many different male guinea pigs and he has been very aggressive with them. He is under one years old. Do you think there's any chance he will be lonely alone? Or do I try to bond him? I don't want an unhappy piggy. Thank you 😊

My girl piggies used to have pee-fights. It was insane to me until I researched it. I thought I was tripping 🤣

is there a time when its ok to have a single pig, esp a male, like an older one or a special needs pig? assuming you are devoting the necessary time to him/her?
@avaggdu1
@avaggdu1 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the individual piggy; some pigs actually prefer to be alone or have issues that make it necessary, but as a rule of thumb, most piggies are happier in pairs or larger groups (but don't assume that piggies will automatically be friends with any other pig). Human contact is a poor substitute for piggy companionship. Pigs are not like cats or dogs that will adopt a human companion.

I have a Midwest Critter Nation cage. Would it be a good home for two Guinea pigs?
@ScottysAnimals
@ScottysAnimals 8 ай бұрын
If the Midwest cage is 8 square feet it is considered the absolute minimum for a pair of guinea pigs but I personally don't recommend anything less than 10 ft. Look at a traditional C&C cage and understand that the grids are 14 in there for a 2x4 grid cage is actually over 10 ft

I have had guinea pigs for about 6 years. I have always tried to keep in pairs. But currently I have one male (Shade) that I've tried to pair up but he traps the other GP in corners or houses. So he's still by himself. But he has paired makes on each side of him. I also currently have 5 females that were in 6x2 c&c buti have had to separate due to one being agressive. I have 14 total right now that have all been rescues or babies of rescues. I have recently seen a local farmer breeding GP's in Michigan. It makes me sick.

I went to LAGPR knowing I wanted boys. Didn't care about the details of age, breed, size, etc. For the only reason that boys are harder to get adopted. I ended up adopting two 3ish-year-old and minor special needs boys (that broke up a week into bringing them home; now living side by side). I truly believe me and my 2 boys were destined to be together. It's crazy. They were easier to tame definitely. I assume because they're older. And if I were to adopt again or try to find them friends to share their space with, I'd definitely go for older boys again. But as Scotty said, I know my space limit. And I currently can't commit to 4 permanent solo pig cages in case the bonding goes sideways.

It is kinda obvious in unneutered boys! There's something quite comforting in feeling a pair of hot guinea pig testicles nestled against your arm!
