I've had a stutter my whole live, and its worse in Spanish than in English... it's weird how the stutter goes away, or becomes more severe or less depending on what you're doing.

Mel Tillis, who’s daughter is country singer Pam Tillis, was known for his singing, but he also had a stutter that was not effected when he sang! I remember him from an old movie he did with Arnold Schwarznegger (can’t remember what it’s called but it was a terrible, cheesy western-and was supposed to be!).

I just viewed this clip and u beat me to it. His younger brother was feeling proud and emotional for his big bro. I can relate to this when my little brother felt emotional when i won 1st place in a squash competition. Its just brotherly love only we can feel and understand. Fun fact. The area of the brain for speech and for singing are different so that’s why most people who stutter when they talk do not stutter when they sing. :) Amazing job! 😊

To further explain when you sing you don't think. Those who stutter there is a switch in the brain that when you have to think about what your saying it comes out as a stutter. However when you sing you sing from memory and don't have to think. This allows someone who stutters not to stutter while singing. All because they don't have to think about what's being said. It's being recited.

Well, these are all great explanations, but, as someone that stutters, here's medical fact, yes, some of it has to do with thought, but, its more to do with the use of the diaphram, when people like me sing, we use the diaphram differently, instead of the spasming effect we have, its a continual use, we relax and allow the air to flow. I'm 41 and have been stuttering since i was 7 years old. At 41 i can carry on a conversation but speak a little slower, when i was 7 to 15-16, i couldnt say more than 4 or 5 words with out stuttering, people have no idea how frustrating it is to not be able to talk, especially when you have so much to say. Think of it like this, imagine an air hose.... what happens when you put a kink in that hose? When that happens our brains try to compinsate and force the air out resulting in "stuttering" . I was in speech therapy for a good majority of my life, i know what im talking about. When normal people talk, they dont realize that they stop the air flow between words, but for someone who stutters, its a nightmare. When i talk now, i do a "johnny cash" i fill up my lungs, and say everything that I can slowly in one breath. But yes, this young man has an amazing voice!

yes! also when you sing you know completely what you are about to say, and the music alongside is a distraction but like any singer it keeps you in time. you’re literally reciting from memory but your words are forced out by the music in the background. it’s like you go into autopilot:) (i stutter too)

The way he sings reminds me of a combination of Josh Groban and Michael Buble. I wasn't expecting this from how he spoke. Not because of the stutter but because of the somewhat thinness to his natural speaking voice. He has such range and strength to his singing voice. Also I find it amazing that this is something that happens a lot to people that stutter but like to sing. Mel Tillis for example stuttered quite badly at times, and yet whenever he sang he never stuttered. A fantastic musician friend of mine is the same way. He has stuttered ever since childhood, but when he sings he doesn't stutter. The man can play about 3 dozen instruments, and can pretty much master anything he puts his mind to. I guess a stutter was his one flaw to make sure he wasn't perfect haha.

I used to stutter. I went to a speech therapist. I mentioned to her that I didn't have a problem when I sang. She said it was because you use different muscles when you sing.

Fun fact! It's because when you sing, you know the lyrics. It's premeditated speech that you've learned and gone over many times. However, normal talking is something that comes to you on the spot, and as a result your vocal chords don't know what to do

This is the second time I watched this singer and still I couldn’t make it past the first lyric/phrase without starting to shake & have tears literally burst forth from my eyes. This kid has that very, very rare musical ability to touch a person’s soul, their emotional center. And that’s just something that no vocal coach anywhere, anytime can teach. The words "you seem to have an ineresting story" was clearly staged to inform the audience of his condition. That's just how television is. But, it doesn't make it less of a good episode. It's either staged or everytime he hears a singer who feels comfortable with the song/their voice that he would ask them the same question but just worded differently.

I was a stutterer until about 5.5 yrs old. I can remember how hard I struggled to not stutter, and my Mom was such a support and encouragement to me in those years! Just about the time I was starting kindergarten, I suddenly stopped stuttering...it was like a miracle!

I can't carry a tune with a shovel and wheel barrel, but I have so much color and beauty in my life because I have such a love for music in all genres. Having a deep appreciation for music or art can make ones life very interesting. Never feel like you're bland or uninteresting.

I see him and think "oh look at me...I am a coder" like big freggin deal lol. Who here knows the old country music star Mel Tillis? He had a bad stutter but was one hell of a singer. Not sure how it works like that but he had an incredible career. Loved him in the old Fina commercials.
