Autism hasn't kept 12-year old Ethan Fowlks from playing the game he loves. He hit a walk-off 3-run home run giving the Salt Lake Sidewinders the Championship at the Cooperstown Dream Park tournament.

Then we moved and he missed a season but hasn't looked back. He has played on competitive rec teams and travel teams. He could not talk til he was 4 but he can play ball. He loves all sports intensively but plays baseball. He played every in field position last Spring and plays SS and pitcher and catcher now. He hasn't gotten his HR yet but soon. He has hit several triples. I wish they could meet!!!! I have a best friend that lives in SLC so maybe we should make a trip to see him play! :)

I'm just like your son. I wasn't verbal til 3 though. But i'm two years older and pitch just like he does, the only difference i that i don't catch and i play second base. When you're son goes to high school and tries out for the team, just tell him to relax and have fun. The first year of high school is tough. This is coming from a incoming sophomore. Your boy could be the next Jim Eisenreich.

People with developmental disABILITIES deserve and have the right to try anything and do anything they desire. They very well may not be able to do the things that a non-disabled person can do but that does not mean they shouldn't try. The dignity of risk is the term used to describe this. Of course, it's right to use common sense when anyone does anything that could cause harm or be dangerous in any way but never just assume someone, anyone, simply cannot do something. This is a heart warming story in many ways.

If you have met one person w autism, you have met ONE person with autism. There are no "rules" for how "disabled" they may appear. Some of these kids were lucky enough to have great early intervention amid worked VERY hard to appear normal sometimes. My son is the most normal kid ever when he is playing ball. And his "gift" of being super focused on ball means he is self aware and aware of every possible play while on the field. He is rarely distracted! He has made more double plays than any other kid on any team we have been on. Open your minds to what great people you are ruling out bc of their label.
