A teen with special needs could not stop crying with joy when she entered a hallway in her school and discovered her boyfriend who has Down Syndrome holding a bouquet of flowers and ready to ask her to prom. The beautiful moment took place between Hailey Harris, 19, and Hunter Ward, 21, at Hope School in Marianna, Florida, on March 2, just a few months after Hunter moved away from the area. When Hailey saw Hunter - who was surrounded by teachers and pupils holding signs of support - she began to well up, only for Hunter to reassure her not to cry. He then got down on one knee and expressed to Hailey how much she means to him before presenting her with a series of gifts, including a chocolate bar.

As a Dad to a special needs child myself, My daughter was voted as the entire Class' Homecoming Queen. There was no "Special dance/homecoming" for special needs children at her school. So, I absolutely love this!

My first girlfriend had spina bifida, and I wanted to get to know her better, so I asked her to homecoming. She said yes, and we began a relationship. Unfortunately, things didn't work out the way we wanted, but the important thing I take away was my intention was to make someone happy, just like our friend in this video. I wish more people like him existed in this world.

@@user-mj9ti4zz8cas someone who also has Spina Bifida I don’t see anything wrong with the term “disability” as the definition states it as “a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.” This true because neither me nor that little girl (I’m assuming) can walk and that’s something that causes limitations in our lives. It doesn’t mean we are less than other people, it just means we can’t do something that the majority of people can do and by calling what we have “different abilities” you are willfully ignoring the struggles that disabled people do face every day….of course this is just my personal opinion. I’m not trying to start a fight i just want to point out that disabled people are normal people that have various ranges of sweetness and innocence. That guy is doing better than I did. Both years that I could go to prom growing up, all of the girls I asked either already had dates or just flat out told me no. So…I just went stag both my junior and senior years. I had female friends who I got official pictures with, but it felt more out of pity. I still had a good time both years, but it’s always been one of those things I really wished could have been more memorable.

Don't give up. There are a lot of videos on You Tube showing people that overlook someone's disability and ask them out on a date or the prom. That girl who turned you down..well, at least you know what she is REALLY like: a stuck-up snob. I used to go to a place--before COVID spoiled the whole thing--where there was dancing. There was a girl there with down's syndrome, and I made sure I danced with her every evening. Not many other guys danced with her--some, but not many.
