I haven't seen it mentioned yet so I have to recommend the documentary "The Act of Killing", it's light on context but it served as my introduction to the history of the indonesian genocide and it effectively communicated the horror of it in a way that sometimes escape a dry historical account.

As a German I had never heard about Dutch colonialism before. Our history lessons are so focused on European history and the world wars you never learn about any atrocities done in the East be it by the Dutch, Japanese or others. I understand why they do it that way because Germany has it's fair share of history and atrocities that's important about to learn from but I'm always shocked about all the history we skipped in school.

You can learn more about the Indonesian Political purge in The Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer. Nationalist gangs were and still are openly supported by the Indonesian government, and committed a huge amount of the murders. Some of the most prolific killers are still alive and hailed as national heroes. One of them is the main “character” in The Act of Killing.

Thanks for talking about this lads, honestly Indonesia has been pretty secretive about the horrible things they did in both West Papua and East Timor, Suharto's propaganda is still very much planted into people's minds, and you know, this video made me realize that us Indonesians are a little bit too gullible and naive for thinking that we never really did anything bad Wish you all the best, hope they don't find out about this vid and decided to block it here And also yes, Bung Karno is a very sexy man, I agree with that

I clicked on the video because I thought the Philippines was involved somehow, and I say that because the background of the thumbnail features the Philippine National Police logo. But I'm not disappointed because I learned about the horrors of the US-backed mass murders in Indonesia and the ongoing fight against Western imperialism in island of Papua. This was an eye-opener, and I'll definitely check out the documentary! Thank you for the bravery and journalism! Cheers from the Philippines!
