She needs to remember that for HIM, he's on the greatest adventure of his life. He's ship disembarking for uncharted seas, and he's excited. But I totally understand how she feels. My youngest son is graduating from high school. For over 20 years, my WHOLE existence was supporting them and making sure they had a home, and had food, and had the things they needed, and had money for college, and I stopped having friends, and having a life, and stopped going out, because my whole world was THEM, and they're gone, and it's been hard. Finally started to pick myself up and get some hobbies, but it's one thing to live your life for other people, and it feels totally different just doing things because I feel like it. It's like it has no point.

I'm 19 years old currently and after reading your story, even though I can't personally relate to it since I'm not a parent yet, I can really empathise with you as I think my parents are going about the same period in their own lives where my brother and I are going to go off on our paths outside of our house where we've grown up in for 20 years. I just hope my parents and you can find something to keep yourselves motivated and happy for the years to come after your respective children start living their lives more independently than before.

That's the way of things since the beginning of time "Children must leave parents". If they do it, it means that you as a parent did the best you could... You prepared them for what the world is going to throw them. It is normal to feel alone, sad, crushed or fear even happiness. I mean, what parent won't feel that way? But here is the thing: When you have a kid you become a mom or a dad. But it is important not to forget how to be a man or a woman, a husband or a wife and as long as you remember it the feeling of emptiness won't cause too much pain. Of course, your child will always be an important part of your life but he or she should not be the entire center of your world or the one thing that keeps you going on. Otherwise, when the time for them to leave arrives, you may feel betrayed, alone, or that your life has ended and over the years you could grow cold, bitter or angry with everything and everyone that surrounds you.

Not really - it's a modern times thing for children to leave their parents - since hunter-gatherer times families have been relatively tight knit and integral to the survival of the human race. Humans cant feed themselves without other humans to teach them and to work with. It is no surprise western countries are falling apart.

I mean many children just return to their parents only, UFC Legend Don Frye lived with his parents and never switched hometown, Cowboy Cerrone of the UFC lives with his Grandmother, Wife and his 3 sons to this day he keeps going to his hometown Denver, Dominick Cruz of the UFC too lives with his grandmother, mother, grandfather and brother. Many UFC Stars live with their parents and all.

Why Mason doesn’t have any reaction or emotion? He becomes cold the because of the way he grew up? All those conflicts and change of environments. It’s like nothing can make him sad anymore even when his gf had left him.

I'm a dad of twin boys.. ..they 16 soon. I divorced 12 years ago, been a more hands on dad the average as co parented with there mum, without hate between us. This scene is soooo relevant to so many parents, it's over way quicker than you realize it's going to be.....and you forget about the person you used to be, because that person you left way behind.....and it's a bit scary going back to find them. Beautiful film....... truly

I thought Mason's overall choice of friends was poor. Like those guys he goes "camping" with in the house (apart from Tony who seemed OK). And his stepbrother and stepsister seemed okay as well. His girlfriend Sheena was shallow and bitchy too. There are plenty of guys who don't behave like Mason's "friends", and plenty of girls who are nicer than the bratty sister Sam. Nicole at the end of the film seemed nice.
