Kristen Boelcke-Stennes some teachers are part of the problem. But majority (especially the new ones coming in) have a big problem with the system. Unfortunately if you fight it (like I did) you get looked down upon and harassed by administration. You can lose your job

that's so true! there is a law in south korea that you must have short hair and it must be natural, and the only way i know that is because i saw this book about the best education systems (finland, s. korea, poland) and decided to read it during my free period. the book is "the smartest kids in the world and how they got that way" by Amanda Ripley.

Really people that's 400 and something people that commented on his hair and missed the whole gist of this whole thing God made us as individual people to be who we want to be, love each WITHOUT judgment...how do you think that made him feel???Funny thing is I ab solutely loved his hair ,you know why it was out of the box he dared to be who you wanted to be. In Europe: your employer pays your taxes.

But as far as things like property tax (which is absolute bullshit) or capital gains tax (money made from investments) or if you are a subcontractor and a bunch more I'm sure I don't even know of. You are responsible for filing yourself. But with programs like TurboTax, tax act and etc, it's pretty easy to file your taxes.

One of my best friends didn’t go to school altogether (she was home schooled) and she turned out to me the most successful person I know. It’s not JUST coincidence, it’s because her parents taught her how to live. Not just math and English, but how to do taxes. How to have kids when she WANTS to. How to vote, and how to make money. "We focus on testing" Yes, way too much. To the point where some teachers teach to the test, ie they know how the tesst will be presentesd and then teach you how to answer the questions. You walk away with no real knowledge, forgetting it all straight after the test, but the teacher gets good grades and looks good to education boards who claim these students have been educated. It also fails because it puts too much emphasis on a 3 hour test. Not only does it stress students out to the point where it affects their ability to perform as well as they could, its just in general a shitty way to assess knowledge of a whole semester. Students don't get a proper chance to explain themselves, you're essentially testing how well they've remembered things (because most tests are closed books), and how concise and efficiently they can explain themselves. You're not actually testing that they know the topic.

Exactly! Life is full of unexpected events, and the only thing that I think schools have us learn is how to learn, while meanwhile giving us (MOSTLY) useless information. After grade 6 or 7 (US, ages 11-13) we don't really learn anything important for LIFE, other than social skills. Basically what I'm saying is that school teaches us how to learn while occasionally using that to give us important information.

I’m in 9th grade and I get extremely stressed before an assignment and i can’t focus and I end up making mistakes like subtracting instead of adding and it’s all because of the grades or marks like when I get bad marks I just start thinking that I’m a failure and I’ll probably never become anything in life and I almost die of stress. I asked my math teacher when we were ever going to use the things she was teaching us in the real world. She said it was for those of us who wanted to become a mathematician or an engineer. Then she said she understands the majority of us aren't going to choose that career and she thinks we should be able to choose which class of math we want to take as well as other subjects. The thing is, that statement about schools underestimating kids really resounds with me. When I was in elementary school I was excited to learn. I would be excited to learn now if we learned practical things. But honestly as someone who has no interest in math and has no plan on using advanced math as an adult, I see no reason to learn the amount of math I learn in highschool. I'm so glad people are listening to you and your thoughts, Dave. I remember, last year during school, I showed this video to my Speech class, where we're encouraged to talk and debate about things, and everyone took your video the wrong way! Everyone called it bullshit, among other things. I tried to explain what you were really saying, but I was shot down. Fast forward towards the end of the year, everyone was suddenly talking about the faults in the school system. Now, I wouldn't be upset about that, but it was the fact that everyone acted like it was the first time this subject was brought to light that upset me. I don't know, I guess I'm upset about something extremely petty. But I'll have you know I'm 16 years old, 5 ft 2 in, and been repeatedly told I'm adorable and have my anger and passion constantly laughed at, even when I'm trying my best to be heard. You have every right to be upset about it; you brought up the issue in a positive way and also the way the current generation gets information, and you class was completely rude to you and refused to hear you side IN A SPEECH CLASS DEBATE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! The teacher should have corrected the students that this is NOT the way to do a debate. To make it worse, months later the issue came up and everyone completely neglected to mention or remember that you brought this same issue up months ago. You're not at the end of your education. Yes we have to deal with a crappy system right now, but do not let that discourage you from trying to make changes. Learn from the inside how changes are made, so when you get out you can try to make changes for those to come. There is still hope, I promise you. And if all else fails, independent study is always an option. I have learned more in the four years after high school than I did in my entire school career. Now that I am not burdened with five hours of homework every night, I have more time and energy to devote to growing myself intellectually in a manner befitting my learning style. I've learned more since high school, and I've actually been busier than I was in high school. I have a full time job, a three year old kid, a husband, and an apartment, along with everything else that comes along with that. And yet I managed to get my certificate in medical billing, I am about to become a certified pharmacy technician, and I'm learning some basic vehicle maintenance, as I'm considering becoming a mechanic. I never would've been able to do that in high school, even though I actually went to school fewer hours than I work. Some weeks I work up to 52 hours! And yet I'm still getting more of an education than I did in the ACTUAL educational system. Basically it may not seem like it now, but there is still home, as long as you keep in mind your education is only but beginning at the end of your career in the educational system.

I agree with you 110%! I'm 4'10, most likely not getting taller, and have a small voice. I once made an entire speech on why the education system in Arizona should be looked over and reviewed by actual students and past students, but I had allergies and sneezed at the end. All I received was, " Your sneeze was adorable. " And I got pissed! And they blamed it on the sterotype that short people have short-tempers. And then someone else does that same topic, just withoit as much depth and they were regarded with praise and nods of the head. It's so upsetting. I am in my 40s, and I am only now learning to manage household finances and learn about credit and loans and so forth. I have a degree in Paralegal Studies. I can write legal documents that could determine someone's future, potentially going to jail or not; but no one ever taught me things like, "Your rent should be no more than % of your income, and you should be saving this %, etc." Why? My father had a business degree, but he ran off with a teenager, when I was young. My mother was a radiologic technician and could teach me things like math and science but was never taught how to handle a household functionally either. I am so grateful that my college required a class for graduation that taught us how to do a resume, job interviews, etc.; or I would have had no clue on that either. My mother was very smart and did a great job raising three kids by herself, but she couldn't teach what she never learned, and it could have so easily been covered in high school. Instead I learned the same books two years in a row, the same math two years in a row, the same history three years in a row (American history doesn't take four years! Why wasn't there any world history??), etc. There was so much repetition and unnecessary information that I could have pursued on my own, while they taught me things I needed to learn for life. I didn't even know there was a bill of human rights, until I hear his song. I can write papers that could keep felons out of jail!! There is something very wrong in this country! I will give my school credit for making it mandatory that we take foreign language. I took Latin and French in high school, and though I am not even close to fluent in either, it helped me to learn every other language, including higher English and legal terminology, in my life.

The wealthiest are often depicted as obese and generally silly characters. But in reality they are often smart and fit people with varied skillsets that make them formidable. When he said that kids with ADHD will learn better moving then sitting, I literally sometimes have to or I start getting so frustrated of the nosies that make it even harder to listen like kids tapping their fingers, I would start whining and just be a blob of unhappiness. In the third grade, I was at the desk closest to the door and the tiles since well there were water fountains and a sink in there and well carpet molds so... ANYWAY! I was the closest to the tile so from time to time. I would stand up and walk up and down the tile while my teacher talked. It helped a lot but after that I was never allowed to again. I would doodle sometimes too if I got bored, but now it's rude to cause they say that U NEED UR EYES AND EARS LISTENING. Now I have real trouble focusing cause I also start talking if I get bored. My fifth grade teacher says "Do you need to be talking?" Sometimes. Yes I do Mrs. Teacher. So realize that some kids with ADHD need to be doing something almost at all times. And yes. ADHD does mean that people who have it get destracted, but that's the only thing. Yes I am diagnosed with ADHD. I know it.

I have ADHD and when I'm in school it can be a real struggle. Whilst my grades were okay, I found it hard to understand what people were talking about simply because I needed to learn in different ways. For about a year, the teachers ignored the fact that I wasn't coping well...but luckily, things are starting to change. And it's because of people like Dave, that this is changing. Though there are still lots of children struggling...I believe one day things will be better

From age 6 to 16 we repeated the three biggest religions in our country and like two others. We spent i shit you not like 5 years on four kings. We just repeated the same thing over and over. Boyinaband When you mentioned disorders in your song, it really got me thinking. My school has given me counselling three times and only one of them worked and that's because I asked for it. The other two I was given because I didn't speak up much because I've always been too scared to, but the counsellors didn't help it whatsoever. And the third one, I actually talked to her and explained how I felt and that I always felt second best because of my brother's autism always coming first. And I knew more about autism than the school counsellor did. Hardly anyone knows anything about it because we aren't taught about it, a kid at my school thought it was a subject at university. So none of us can even recognise one or know how to help it. I can't talk to people I don't know so the idea of gettting a job is terrifying to me, but I can repeat the electro-magnetic spectrum to you. I can even find a value using something that doesn't exist without even knowing why on earth it works, but I don't know how to express feelings or emotion or how to comfort people.

I know how you feel! My cousin has autism & nobody seems to know what it is. I constantly have to explain that he sometimes doesn't understand certain social things ( like when people are just joking about things or being sarcastic) & that they didn't do anything wrong they just might need to explain things a little more. & make sure he understands what you mean so you don't offend him. I really think schools should teach people what autism is.

I had a guy in my class with ADHD and he would always get in trouble for doing things he wasn’t supposed to. The school literally tried to drug him but his parents obviously said no. He wasn’t that bad at school he just couldn’t focus on the boring lessons that he didn’t need.

As someone with adhd i felt that. It honestly sucks sitting for at least 45+ minutes in a single classroom in a single chair unable to really *move* besides wiggling or moving your hands and legs but subtly and almost sneaking because you don't want anyone to notice unable to pay attention to a lesson you'll forget in an hour anyways and then getting in trouble for something you can't even control over and over again and when you're undiagnosed and no what knows what's wrong not even you or when you are but don't have any form of medication to at least calm it for a few so you can seem like an average human.

3:40 EXACTLY. I was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago and I can not sit still for longer than 10 minutes unless I am interested in the topic being taught. Most of the time when we’re doing our work I find myself standing while working because I find sitting and hunching over very uncomfortable. I don’t stand and work I kind like crouch a little bit and work. If I’m not distracted by the work then I’m distracted by the clock and “How much longer till class ends?”. When I get sick I’m happy. You know the school is doing something incredibly wrong if kids are happy to get sick. When I first moved to where I currently live, the school system and the teachers made me depressed and suicidal. Why would I have been depressed and suicidal if the school system was good?

I think it’s amazing that his song opened up an actual discussion to something so important. We need to tech more life lessons in school, when they get out of school they have no clue what to actually do so they get into credit debt not realizing it harms your credit so much, or how to save money to get ahead in life. They have no clue what taxes are, 401k, savings bonds etc. we never learned that so in a way we fail our kids by pushing them to finish school not knowing the basic skills to survive the world of money or how to secure a future after you land a job.
