Nathan Neil of Bozeman powered ahead of Owen Powell of Mercer Island WA to take the win in US#2 4:01.31.
Neil, who will run for Powell's dad in college at the University of Washington, smashed the all-time best for a Montana prep by more than eight seconds.
"When it came down to the last 50, I just wanted to beat Owen," Neil said. "He made a really big move in the fourth lap and I'm so glad he did that. It really helped the race."
The leaders went through the first 880 yards in 2:03. Neil closed in 57.95 seconds.
Powell, in second in US#3 4:02.04, ran the second-fastest mile in Washington prep history, behind only the legendary Gerry Lindgren (1964).
Josiah Tostenson of Crater OR, another junior, ran US#4 4:03.55 and became the fastest junior in state history in the 1,500 meters (en route time of 3:46.34).
Asher Danielson of Ida B. Wells OR finished fourth in US#5 4:04.10, becoming the fourth-fastest miler in state history and the fastest ever in the Portland Interscholastic League.
Vincent Recupero from Bishop Blanchet WA, fifth overall and third among juniors, ran US#8 4:06.79.
