Only problem about the song is it was not the Black and Tans but the Auxiliaries that they fought. The Auxiliaries were mainly Officers from WW1.

Essex and Manchester regiment only the Auxies went to wrong place and left the gap through which the column escaped. The search of the area was instigated as a result of an IRA spy who revealed the column base and arms dump. The spy was John Buckley alias Patrick Coakley a Bandon officer see Murder by the throat spies and informers in the Irish war of independence
