Jamaica is a place if you are born there then you're Jamaican. If you have Creole in your lineage then you are Creole. Geechee is not just A PLACE in the South Eastern USA but it's a people with a history and culture, a past filled with pain and suffering, and a present where you are trying to stop white people AND local governments from taking your lands for new developments by the water. It is a lineage that includes being kidnapped from Africa, enduring the Middle Passage, surviving slavery, surviving Jim Crow, and constantly trying to navigate the racism of present times like red lining, police brutality, etc. No, I don't expect you to understand it. Because you are a certain type of white (a purposely delusional type). These are things that we have faced and are still facing. Now, unless your lineage includes these things then you are NOT GULLAH GEECHEE! This is a part of our 'American Experience'. Yes, started in Africa (place), concentrated in South Eastern USA (place), but the experiences separate it. Every black person isn't Gullah Geechee. Every Southerner isn't Gullah Geechee. Every Charlestonian ain't Gullah Geechee. And Every American ain't Gullah Geechee. Why? Because they don't have our particular history.

@@SlimThrull Geechee is a culture. Let's not play there are only black Geechees. Being Geechee refers to the black people that retained a lot of their African customs that fought in war to end their enslavement. That specifically happened in South Carolina.. Not even all black Americans are Geechees that is something that is talking about a specific group of black people. So no there are no white Geechees... Just like there's no white aboriginals... English people say the same thing. In England they will tell you there are no black English people. They say the black people there are black British people. Being English for them is a specific thing, is it not? Let's not play. I don't suddenly become Japanese because I like anime. That is still a part of their culture and people appreciate it. But it doesn't suddenly make you Japanese because you like it, let's stop playing...

If people define 'race' as just the colour of someone's skin and not the entire cluster of culture, history, associations, biases, and lived experiences, then racism can't be real if people "can't see colour." The same is true for all those other concepts. If 'culture' is just the way in which people grew up, and not associated with race, history, associations, biases, and lived experiences, then everybody can belong to a culture. But in reality, neither of those are true. Because marginalised groups can never fully belong to a dominant culture. To then conversely claim that you belong to a marginalised group, but insist on your whiteness rather than standing with your group against a dominant culture that marginalises that group, is showing loud and clear that you do not in fact belong to that marginalised group. I don't deny that white people can grow up in a dominantly black cultural group. And I truly hope they feel included completely, and don't get excluded because of their race. But if they don't stand with that group, don't struggle together with that group for equality and inclusion, then they have left that group. Because they could, and didn't care that others couldn't.

Do you know what should really irritate you about this video? Not only is she unwilling to let other people have their thing without trying to force her way in, she also won't support the things that could legitimately be hers. When is the last time that you saw a Highland Games Festival planned for your city if you have a sizable population of people with Scots-Irish background? How about an Oktoberfest or a Chrismasmarkt if there are Germans? The Greek and Russian festivals in our town have almost completely died out, and I take partial credit for keeping them alive because I run the annual plant sale at the Orthodox church that helps to fund those festivals. I'm Pakistani. What connection do I have to those cultures? Nothing, but I like to see them continue. Where are all the descendants of these people and why aren't they making efforts to foster the culture? Instead there are so many people like this woman who insist on pushing their way in to another culture because they feel that the legwork has already been done there. Go find the long-since-dead parade for your people that your grandparents likely supported and bring that back.

Fun fact! Red hair is not exclusive to white people. ALL human groups, no matter the colour of their skin or their ethnic background, carry the gene for red hair. It is present ACROSS humanity. It just tends to express itself more regularly in the white folks because they tend to carry more recessive genes which gives the red hair gene a more likely opportunity to be expressed. But you can be black with naturally red hair. You can be asian and have naturally red hair. You can be native american and have naturally red hair. It's rarer, but it happens.

This os th3 colonizer mindset: they think because they move onto a land and/or into a culture, they can claim community with that culture or identity to those people. Cultural identities like Creole and Geechee arent memberships that you and buy into. If she truly believed what she was saying, she wouldn't have to say *white* creole and *white* geechee. Even her subconscious is telling her she's not creole or geechee.

It’s funny how she started out with skin color relative to nationality (fine, however ignoring how white people arrived in those places to begin with, obviously,)and then decided that same skin color relates to culture in the same way. As a white person, with a southern background, I can see many similarities between the culture I grew up with, and the culture my Black brothers and sisters grew up with. That does not mean it is the same culture. Our ancestors lived in the same place, ate many of the same foods, shared some beliefs…but had ENTIRELY different experiences in society and so the cultures, while similar in some aspects, are remarkably different in some key ways. MY GOD, the audacity of this woman, I mean…

What about if a white child was adopted by an indigenous Mexican family and raised in an indigenous Mexican community? There are fringe cases where the answer is a complicated (which is what trans-racial use to refer to before it got co-opted by a different group of people). But it’s mostly just a discrattionary tactic as it’s such a minor issue and point that it doesn’t really change the conversation in any meaningful way. A different example is when people say in response to abortion is a women’s right issue is, “well some women are infertile so it’s not all women.” Like sure, that’s true, but that doesn’t change anything or add anything to the conversation

As a White person from Latin America, I don't like the comparison with White Afrikaans, Hispanic countries had something call "Mestizaje", Mixture of cultures, we had our history with racism and slavery indeed, but segregation was different (Not better just different), it was difficult to segregate people when the majority are already mix, so many countries encourage European migration and thus the new immigrants usually intermarried with other European migrants like my grandparents but by the second generation it becomes more rare, I'm what we would call "Criollo" (Not the same as the term Creole in the USA), to us it currently means local-born no matter the color, and thus the local culture is a product of the mixture of the various cultures While in English colonies that wasn't the case, segregation was an important aspect of them, creating various distinct cultures instead of a mix of them, the white South African is different to the Coloured South African, who also different to the Indigenous Black South African, this is different to Latin America where each group have adopted aspects of each other creating a new culture I wouldn't say I'm the same as a Black person from my country, but to us we are both Criollos

Like how do you start out by saying that people don’t know the difference because race and nationality, then say something that stupid! You can be white and you can be Jamaican, but the truest sign in my book on someone that is claiming something they are not, is when they put a modifier on a nationality or culture that otherwise doesn’t have one.
