If you look "white enough" for people to consider you white in America, then isn't that sort of the whole point? If we lived in a perfect world where we never categorized or judged anybody on their appearance, and instead somehow had access to not only their whole family tree but actually none of that matters because we could immediately understand the content of their character and judged them only on that... she might have had a point? But that isn't real life. It's kind of like when people insist they are "color blind". Our education, healthcare, political, and criminal justice systems are demonstrably, quantifiably not color blind.

It's so easy to get stuck in a shell of ignorance, school, pop media and the people I grew up with were never going to give me another perspective and help me understand just how deeply ingrained into my society bigotry is. How deeply it was/is a part of myself. Even though it strongly contradicted my values, even though I held no hate in my heart for poc, I was still racist and I had no idea. The way children are treated the things we teach them, it leaves us a tangled web of confusion and bitterness that takes a lot of time, care, patience and people to help untangle us. I'm not asking for sympathy or such, I just wanted to further explain how and why you're spot on with your comment. I know very little about Brazil, but I remember quite a few Brazilians flipping out because Nayara Justino, who was chosen for the Globeleza carnival queen in 2013, was "Black." Lots of commentary about her being too dark, being more fitting as a maid, and that the title was "supposed" to be held by a light skinned woman. There were, of course, people who had no issue, but enough did that the outcry was deafening. Justino got actual threats and had her title rescinded with no reason or warning given. That does not sound like a society that doesn't categorize people by racial phenotype.

I knew this woman, she was white as snow, bright red hair, and was partially Puerto Rican. Now, I don't know quite how Puerto Rican she was, because her parents looked like super white happy neighbors in a 1950s sitcom, and it wasn't really my business. But it's valid to this story. And because of her heritage, she called herself brown. But any time it benefitted her to be white, she'd say she was white. And on top of that, other white folks treated her with all the perks of her skin color, without a second thought. But if things didn't work out or she was called white, she was the vengeful, hateful recipient of racism. Especially online. It was actually really frustrating, and that kind of mindset was why I couldn't be her friend.

"proving" is such a red flag. There is no amount of effort or such that exempts you from the CAPABILITY to do racist things. And the worst part is that when you tell yourself that you could never do anything racist, cognitive dissonance will just make you blind to anything racist you do. It seems like she means well to some extent, but the worst of things are often done with the best of intentions. Wouldn't mean to be racist =/= couldn't be racist.

As a Brazilian white woman, I feel very embarrassed by this. I want to bury in my head in the sand. I can give context tho on what she means when she says “I’m not white, I’m Brazilian”. It’s because in the US and Europe, we are latinos. So since she apparently lives in the US, she may have similar experiences as people from Mexico, Colombia, etc, rather than other white Americans. For example, there’s a lot of xenophobia towards Brazilians in Portugal and Ireland now bc we’re latinos and not white for them. She is still full of shit tho.

I get it, like I'm Ashkenazi and its so cringe seeing other Ashkenazim be like "I'm not white, I'm Jewish". You're a white Jew, dude. We *are* targeted by the violence of white supremacism but we also benefit greatly from white privilege, it's complicated. We're pretty much white UNTIL we run into a white supremacist who does not perceive us as such, thus stripping away the protection of whiteness. That is not the same thing as being a POC though. But yeah they don't get it, they only clock the "targeted by the violence of white supremacism" bit and just run wild with it.

I'm a white Irish woman but I've been living in Scotland for 7 years. There's racism everywhere, but I thought in Ireland it was more xenophobic ignorance rather than pure racist hatred. In the past 5 years especially things have gone crazy and "foreigners" are used as a scapegoat for everything by an emerging far right. It's abhorrent! My Mam was at a bus stop in Dublin and this a-hole local stood up and started a passive aggressive racist rant at a young Brazilian woman. After challenging the man verbally and giving as good as she got, she turned to my mother and said, "What do you have to say for him?". My Mam made it clear he had nothing to do with her, invited the lady to sit beside her, and they chatted while completely ignoring the ranting maniac who was still going! They shared ear phones and listened to music to drown him out. Immigrants are, and always have been, a boon for Irish society and contribute so much by choosing Ireland as their new home. A particularly singular example: Caio Benicio is a Brazilian man who, at great risk to himself, defended a woman and two young children from a knife wielding attacker. He is a HERO in Ireland. I heard he is running for political office in Dublin. No better man!

Yes, but in the United States, NO ONE would look at her and go "Oh, she's Latinx!" She looks like your average, European white woman. I wouldn't have guessed any bit of "Brazilian". She even sounds like an American, and Brazilian isn't a race or ethnicity, it's a nationality. I was born in Japan, I'm mixed black and Ainu, but I'm not Japanese, except for my nationality. That girl needs to stop and put the shut to the up. If she had said something like she's Pardo, OK, but she didn't, she dropped her "I'm not white" ish while looking every bit of white.

@@RK-dc2esI think you just summed up how in America, whiteness is based on purity. Ashkenazi Jews, Pale Latinos, Pale Middle Easterners and anyone else who has non European admixture despite looking "white" isn't considered white. This is why we had words like "octoroon", "quintroon" or whatever to describe varying levels of blackness, or why Elizabeth Warren tried to identify as Native American. You can have someone who's 1/8 Filipino try to say they aren't white but "white passing" because of their Asian admixture. In Latin American countries like Brazil, these terms don't exist, and all these groups would get labelled as white.

My current husband is Puerto Rican and I asked him in his country are "white" skinned Hispanics treated differently then Hispanics that are darker. He said absolutely. If you're too light with light hair light eyes, you are seen as different in rich or elite in that type of way. The darker you are the more you're looked at as poor or trouble and don't know much. But the olive/tan looking skin then you are the face of what Puerto Ricans should be, you're now appreciated, respected, genuine. But he said just as here in America the darker your Puerto Rican skin is the more disrespected and judged you will be. Race does exist in Hispanic countries too.

She was so close when pointing out how people react to her pale skin and perceive her as white, she almost got it for a second. Last time I checked racists weren't doing genetic testing before deciding how to treat people. You look white you are treated white, That's how it is. We don't get a choice about who our genetic parents are just as we don't get to choose how others will react to that, we can only do our best to learn, grow and not carry that hate into how we treat others. Then share that wisdom.

That was my own comfort as a white woman talking; I'm so far removed from the issue that I genuinely did not see a problem with what she said on a first viewing. Then I read the comments. Within SECONDS, I realized exactly what was so wrong, watched the video a second time, and picked up on the red flags I had missed in my own biases before. Y'all teach me as much as the professor sometimes, and I thank you for that because I'll be the first to admit I get it very, very wrong sometimes. And that's why I'm here! To learn and to unlearn! I visited São Paulo Brazil twice. It was the most racist country I have ever been to. I was surprised how people who were clearly mixed treated black Brazilians so bad. I had to show my Canadian documents in order to access spaces that were for tourists “white” preferably. As long as you were black from Europe or North America it was fine but you had to prove it. They shamelessly admitted that they were screening to ensure that black Brazilians were not pretending they were foreigners in order to access “white spaces”. At stores I had to prove I was a foreigner in order to be served with dignity. Again! They had no problem with black Americans , Europeans or Canadians. They were simply not having any black Brazilians in upscale establishments. This woman with her support for “all lives” is the epitome of Brazilian privilege. Brazilians who look like her, do not represent themselves as black or mixed in Brazil. In Brazil they identify as white.
