Powder from the show Arcane. You could literally have a checklist with the diagnostic criteria nearby and go through them from top to bottom: Severe abandonment issues: check, Unstable sense of self: check, Mood shifts: check, Difficulty controlling anger: check, psychotic-like symptoms (paranoid ideas, hallucinations) under stress and dissociation: check, splitting: check, impulsitivity: check, suicidal behaviour: check...

No, Powder feels more like someone who is suffering from a psychotic depression after a hugely traumatic event. She didn't killed Caitlyn and made beheading her a joke, that shows planning and that she is able to control her anger to a certain degree unless she gets actively triggered. She doesn't have an unstable identity either as things like her hobbies didn't change at all. She's fighting with her inner child, not a different sense of self.

Hey just to let you know you kinda got some of the criteria wrong and missed some, mood shifts and splitting arent in the official criteria but yes BPD people like me have it sometimes. BPD's are also impulsive in a self destructive way that isn't suicidal or self harm. BPD's don't have to be suicidal they can also just be self harming/self destructive. You also missed they have an unstable relationship history/pattern, and chronic feelings of emptiness.

Anakin is a cautionary Tale on what happens when people are not able to access the help they need. Becoming a dictator is an extreme example, but the Jedi Temple did not have the tools to help anakin, because despite embodying a lot of DBT and mindfulness principles, they preached the dismissal and suppression of human emotions. They could not help Anakin because they were out of balance themselves.

Hey I have a similar situation but in the opposite role of your story, I have BPD and also an fp who lives in another country rn, I like him so much but I'm so scared he'd get bored of me or leave me, that's why when I'm in my devaluation phase I just wanna leave him so I wouldn't feel hurt, but I love him at the same time, but then he's boring, so imagine he's boring and cheating on me at the same time. I don't want it anymore (BUT I LOVE HIM) yeah that's how my brain goes like, unlesss maybe I'd feel fully secure that we are in a stable relationship then the symptoms disappear, but its a situationship sadly. I really need help 🥺 + not all bpds could communicate clearly, many are passive aggresive

I could never forgive him for dropping out of my life entirely when I most needed a friend, but I still have a soft spot for people with BPD. I've got AvPD myself. CPTSD seems to be the root for all of us, so there's overlap with all PDs to an extent, but AvPD seems very similar to BPD in terms of emotional sensitivity. The difference is that we turn all those negative feelings inward with a laser focus on ourselves; it's the opposite of narcissism. So I relate a lot.

Another BPD coded character would be Catra from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. She has unstable relationships, emotional splitting, a distorted sense of identity, and paranoia. Her fear of abandonment arose when Adora chose to defect to the Resistance and she became impulsive and even suicidal. She was used as a scapegoat by Shadow Weaver when things went wrong and it contributed to the development of her BPD.

As the child of a severe BPD/narcissist who passed the genes, created a self-destructive monster, and imprinted this vile behavior on me from day one, I clearly identify. Gotta check out the BoJack. I believe that Loki Laufeyson (MCU) is very BPD coded. He fits all of the 9 criteria points to be diagnosed. Most notably, his fear of abandonment (he didn’t want to be alone but also self-sabotaged a lot due to that fear, testing boundaries to test if those would leave him or abandon him) Constant shift with identity (rightful king of asgard to monster, weak to strong, hero to villain, depends on those around him to maintain a sense of identity) Explosive rage (directed towards Odin, Thor, Frigga, Heimdall, Midgard, Natasha, Tony and Malekith and Kurse) Fast and sudden quick changing emotional swings Unstable relationships (Odin, Frigga and Thor most notably) Splitting (mostly seen with his family and friends- goes from seeing the best in them and loving them to seeing the worst in them and loathing them) I could go on, but there’s my take.

I have a neighbor and once friend who is a bit of a Bojack Horseman in the way she behaves. I say “once” because she repeatedly cuts me out of her life only to come crawling back in a week or so and we’re on an off period now. I’m trying to be sympathetic because I know it’s a mental illness and I want her to get better but she has a violent temper and goes from being super nice to me to being verbally abusive in seconds over trivial stuff and it’s well and truly scary. She hasn’t hit me yet, but she’s come close. I’m considering changing dorms in order to establish some distance and I don’t know how to break it to her or how she’ll react.

I know it's been a year and all but probably someone else will come across this. There's a certain border that can't be crossed with things like this. It is hard dealing with bpd and I also totally get that you're trying to be empathetic and a good friend and I love you for that. But once it starts crossing that abuse border and the person isn't actively working on it - which, of course, I don't know. I don't know your neighbour and what she's doing - but hurting you repeatedly over a long period isn't good or fair or right or justified. It can happen, it does happen, but it shouldn't be a constant over a long time. You can't live with bpd without dealing with it. First it'll take up most your time, you have to be very aware for most of it but the longer you go, the less it becomes a highly impactful thing in your life. (And when I say long, I mean long, I've been learning for 12+ years, literally half my life.) At one point you gotta learn to deal with it. There's only so man short term copes you can do, so many friendships you're gonna lose. Tl;Dr: From what it sounds like, you should get out of there on your terms - at least for a little while. There's no use in you walking on eggshells because you're afraid all the time. If not both in the friendship are happy, there is no mutual respect and support in it. Doesn't mean there can't ever be, but right now it's not good and it's not your responsibility. I hope you're both in a better, happier situation now.

@@mari_3kyu Thank you, this is so well said, and I hope it helps somebody else. Unfortunately, in my case, things got way worse. She claimed she was trying to "work on herself" by seeing a therapist, but somehow that just resulted in her developing a huge victim complex, absolutely refusing to believe that she'd ever done anything harmful to other people, and becoming possessive. I started dating a guy, and that resulted in constant castigations and slut shaming (which I later found out was common behavior for her - she'd only had one short, disastrous relationship many years prior, and it really irked her when other women dated, especially if they were actually happy), and eventually she started throwing things at me and pounding on my door at night so I couldn't sleep. I wound up changing dorms and, after she received a warning because others had complained about her, she left (screaming that she hadn't done anything wrong, of course,) and I haven't seen her since. I regret not talking it out with her before leaving, but by then I was scared for my safety, and I don't think it would have made a difference. If you told me she had NPD and not BPD, I'd believe you, but I'm just glad she's gone. I'm glad that you're doing better, though, and I wish you the best.

Hi, Sky. I subscribed some time ago thanks to this video, which was recommended to me around a time I was rewatching Bojack Horseman and also learning a bit about BPD due to a character I was involved with in a play. Not only was this video quite insightful to the condition, but also pretty revealing for myself. As I shared more traits than I anticipated with BPD, and now, having resumed therapy during the past month after a long time, I've been diagnosed with the condition itself by a psychiatrist today. For the longest time I had been frustrated due to feeling like there was always something I couldn't put my finger on about me since grade school. I knew there was just something off about how intense my emotions felt and with how I reacted to most friendships. Now that I've been diagnosed, I've felt a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders, as I now understand myself better and can finally begin treating myself properly, after years of not knowing what was wrong with me. I just wanted to thank you again for this video, which in one way or the other, put me in a path to self-improvement I've desperately needed for a long time.

Here's a few characters I am 99% certain are BPD coded, each reflect their own pain in different ways but with their own unique severities because as we are well aware, people with BPD tend to express themselves in their own way. Spinel from Steven Universe is a textbook BPD, "Splitting" on Steven after getting her memories back, it happens after she is done singing 'Drift Away', having Pink Diamond be her favorite person has her idealizing her, while devaluing Steven during the movie, she is very much hurt, and very toxic, which was touched upon by Rebecca Sugar, the creator of SU. I highly reccomend you give Steven Universe: The Movie a watch. Text does not do it justice, there is so much depth to her. Scarlemange from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is another one, this guy isolates himself but also devalues people and tries turning them like him, he has some Narc traits which is interesting seeing as it's also stigmatized next to BPD. Maligula from Psychonauts 2 has psychopathic traits with her BPD, this character is easily the most dangerous of the bunch, because her mind was altered to have antisocial personality disorder next to it. So she will hold nothing back when trying to hurt (and even murder) people. Surge from Sonic IDW Comics is a recent one, she is a victim of intense psychological and physical scarring abuse by Dr. Starlight, essentially being his test subject for various experiments, she becomes extremely aggresive and paranoid near the end of her latest arc (which hasn't finished) using various powers that are hinted to be a sort of stand-in for drugs in order to numb and try to escape from her own sense of peril and danger. Lookup "Sonic Speed Reading" if you want more info about it, it's a really good read all things considered. All of them have some sort of abandonment trauma and are pretty unstable all things considered, please give them all a shot.

I don’t have bpd but I’ve seen some headcanons that Kinga Forrester from MST3K has bpd, and I think I agree; she has the backstory for it (abandoned by grandmother multiple times, tries to get her attention in season 11), and if I remember correctly they did an interview with her actress who said something along the lines of ‘she doesn’t really know what she wants’ which could be a sign of identity disturbance, also maybe if you count that she’s literally continuing her family’s legacy project that she probably has nothing to base an identity off of anyways. Maybe leaning towards NPD comorbidity since she’s more of the greedy micromanaging boss lady that steals other people’s ideas and claims them as her own I’ve also seen people speculate if JD from Heathers has it, although the musical version of JD shows more bpd traits imo And if you want a semi-canon example, I believe Roman Roy from Succession has described himself as ‘borderline’ in one episode though I haven’t seen it I just really like Kieran Culkin (the actor who plays him) Sorry for rambling

I’m only in season one, so I could be totally wrong. But I think the fear of abandonment is such a huge element in Bojack. I think the reason he is so obsessive over Horsin’ Around is because he had a family in Horsin’ Around moreso than the fame and wealth it gave him. I think we see a really unhealthy relationship with Sarah Lynn because of the attachment between them rather than purely sexual reasons because we don’t see that really with other young/successful characters that elevate his status. He also does a lot of things out of triggering moments, I think, that may affect his status negatively. And I could be wrong, but idk if that is as fitting with npd. But I’m interested to discuss it for sure :)

@@user-mm7jn6bh6lBojack is the closest thing to a representation of BPD that I’ve experienced. It comes off as narcissism, but it’s not. It’s manipulativeness because he’s scared of being abandoned (by Todd, by the world, like he was by his family). He feels that he needs to stay relevant at all times and he does terrible things to do so. He keeps Todd down so he doesn’t leave him. His feelings about other characters change from idealization to hatred on a hair switch. A big plot point is that other characters seem to think he’s a narcissist, but the show does a great job at showing that he’s not. Bojack cares about other people immensely and he feels bad when he snaps out of episodes. He bounces back and forth from being destructive to himself and others to trying to give the world to people he feels he wronged. The show also ties everything back to his parents and a feeling of inadequacy, loneliness, and fear of abandonment (textbook BPD).

Bojack’s symptoms would align far better with npd than with bpd or any other mental illness for that matter. I don’t know why he would be an icon for people with this illness. Bpd and npd just overlap in some aspects.

I feel like part of why BPD is so stigmatized, is that people aren't really properly informed about it either. Just take a look at the number of comments talking about Jinx- she's in a psychosis induced battle with her inner child, her actual sense of self isn't unstable at all. An unstable self often can create fluctuating interests, Jinx hobbies' remained the same. She is able to think of and carry out plans and control her anger to a certain degree. She only has outbursts when she is triggered. That's not having BPD, that's being a teenager who has developped a psychosis due to untreated severe PTSD.

BPD usually stems from childhood abuse/trauma. Your points actually make Jinx BPD at least from my experience having BPD. Unstable sense of self actually means identity issues which can mean different things to different people but that battle with your inner child especially in a psychosis level counts as I have that. Outbursts when triggered also is a part of BPD which I have too. Also I was diagnosed with unexplained psychosis and untreated PTSD as a teen so technically it's more Jinx would grow up to develop BPD at adulthood.

All dramatic movies has one or several mental/emotional disorders....movies would be boring without that drama/tension. TBH, a very old movie IMO is the best study, Who's AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF is the best study. George Segal is such a narcissist. Martha is a 10 BPD with alcoholism. REAL HOUSEWIVES and 90Day Finance' have many many BPD, NPD, and ASD real life people! None of their behaviors are normal or solid and mature. And not all of that is an act either. Many have been arrested and jailed in real life.

Right it’s stigmatized but some people with BPD play the victim role so perfect that they at least deserve to be told that they are responsible for their part of the game called life. You can’t act like a three year old girl … as soon people want to hold you responsible for your actions… sorry it’s my BPD… yes people run as fast as you can from a malignant BPD person because it’s absolutely draining … do I have compassion yes but not limitless…
@EclecticallyEccentric

Of course some people with BPD play the victim role and refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. And no one with it gets an excuse to hurt others because they're in pain. However, the stigma that surrounds it is a big part of why so many people with it refuse treatment or never seek getting a diagnosis. If people believe that most people with BPD are abusive monsters, or that they can't be victims (some people with it are much more likely to wind up abuse victims than perpetrators), and that people with it are incapable of change, it does much more harm than good.

@@EclecticallyEccentric … we go in cycles… it’s not important what others believe it’s important what the person with BPD beliefs. The main problem is people with BPD watch out for validation in other humans. Than there is that believe it doesn’t work out anyway. How can you know if you never tried if DBT works. We have DBT Videos here on YT there the self help DBT book by M.L. For me the point wit Traumatic experiences is. The first step is not to listen to your feelings anymore and to make a conscious decision to break the cycle. And it’s not the other people or society. Nobody can judge you except yourself. It’s just taking care for yourself and asking for help. It’s not easy with or without BPD everybody suffers in one ore multiple ways. Life is suffering stop thinking that you are a special case in suffering- you are not. It’s not easy but Selflove starts with your own first step. Many therapists told me that my trauma is not treatable because I was there years old. But I did not gave up and now I am in body based trauma therapy. Best thing ever. I have to say Ialso meditate up to 2 hours a day. Meditation is a big healer. Before anyone of those “I want to stay in my victim bubble “ women writes that if doesn’t work. Write me back when you did it for at least 12 month every f. day. It’s possible to heal your wounds your inner child your pain body. But it won’t happen sitting in the corner waiting for the prince saving you. This is more of your same old behavior. Growing is taking responsibility that good things will happen. You only live once get your ass up and do the work…

My comment disappeared before I hit comment :- Okay so I have read a lot about BPD over the years and this was interesting. I don't see Gatsby as BPD but definitely Joe Goldberg!!! Now that I know you love Joe like I do, I have to find a video url to put in the comments for you... ;)

I think this video does a really good job of explaining Joe’s behaviors that resemble BPD. It definitely convinces me a bit. But I think this is a really big distinction between book Joe Goldberg and tv show Joe Goldberg. Book Joe Goldberg does not truly care for anyone. There is no Paco character, there is no Ellie. There are no characters he is truly empathetic or protective of. He completely lacks empathy in the books, further than just impulsivity and anger. I’d be interested to discuss this and how you may agree/disagree because I LOVE the you series (books and show) and just named my new kittens Love and Forty Quinn :)

@@sydphinfan Hmmm... interesting, Sydney. I don't feel the character is so different from the book Joe, but it's been a few years since I read the 1st one and the 2nd as well - the TV series has most likely replaced my mental image of book Joe. The 1st book is one of my alltime favorite books though. I LOVED the narrator's voice SO MUCH! I found the series voice overs quite a bit like his internal dialogue in the book.

@@ShannonsChannel it’s also a disadvantage to try to compare book Joe to tv Joe because so much of Joe’s emotion in the show comes through nonverbal language rather than what he explicitly states. In the book I believe we don’t see much emotion, certainly rage more than anything, which makes me think they’re different. The book doesn’t explicitly state very often if Joe is crying whereas we do get to see that in the show. Guess we’ll have to ask Caroline Kepnes! :)

Fun fact alot of BPD's are also INFP's and usually come from abusive childhoods. Try living with constant emptiness, urges to kill yourself or harm yourself, constant fear you'll be abandoned no matter what by everyone you ever loved, feeling like you are possessed when angry, struggling with reality and identity, constantly failing your relationships and having all the heartbreak and shame of it, the shame from being stigmatized, constant mood extremes and impulsivity and every emotion you ever feel is 10x stronger than an average person on a daily basis and see if that's not emotionally painful.

@@wormwoodcocktailI think like 50% of pw bpd experience psychotic symptoms. It's one of the diagnostic criteria. In terms of emotional pain I think people consider BPD to be the most painful emotionally is because the disorder is centered around extreme moods, lack of a self or self image and unstable relationships whereas Psychotic disorders are based on delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thinking and can be effectively treated my medication. BPD has no medication treatment and therapy has a below average success rate and can take years. If not the most painful it's definitely the #1 hardest disorder to treat

I know this is a shitty explanation but most of the time, people with BPD can’t control their actions or reactions, no matter how much they rationalise the situation or place logic on it. I totally understand where you are coming from. I'm ngl, a lot of people with bpd tend to do awful things sometimes. I've screamed at people in public over personal matters purely bc I just genuinely didn't have control. In front of everyone in our social circles without thinking. Keep in mind I have adhd aswell which also causes impulsivity. Anyways, BPD anger and our mood swings are incredibly strong, causing it to be really hard for us to hold back. That said, that DOES NOT make the bad actions we make ok. I understand your veiw %100 bc some people with bpd do use their condition to excuse their actions, but that's not all of us. In any case, if your ex did make excuses for his shitty actions, that's on him and I'm sorry you weren't treated right. You deserve someone who is healthy and makes you happy. (For reference, I'm a teen with a ton of BPD traits, but I've also been in therapy to help myself be more aware of my issues.)

Another person with BPD here. I know it's hard to understand especially when they dumped you our logic thens to be illogical sometimes. We aren't trying to hurt others if we are that's not BPD, we just have been hurt/abused and/or abandoned in the past sometimes multiple times that all we know is pain, wee also tend to feel a lot and were never taught how to express it. We both love and are afraid of love and this gets too intense sometimes and we're scare our trauma gets repeated so we jump to our emotions than logic. We also don't know ourselves and sometimes don't view ourselves as good people. If you chose to understand BPD remember to separate your ex and the BPD. What your ex did doesn't 100% apply to every BPD and BPD can explain but not excuse your ex's behaviors also BPD is possibly treatable with a ton of specific therapy
