Good, fair review Rob. I bought a BPS B1 Bushcraft knife earlier this year. I'd never built or modified a knife before so I thought I'd have a crack at improving it. I removed the original handle and fitted orange liners and stabilised myrtle wood scales, wet-fitted the sheath to the new handle then re-stitched the sheath with orange thread to match the liners. I polished out all the imperfections when I shaped the new handle. It's now one of my favourite knives, and it was an absolute bargain.

I bought my BPS just before the war outbreak. I cold blued the blade to reduce rust after 0000 steel wool treatment on tooling marks. Handle was a bit rough, so hand sanded and used Linseed oil to seal. Mink oil on the sheath that was excellent. Unfortunately, I can't afford a custom knife for myself, but I'm happy with BPS. Cheers from New Orleans

I with you. I have their knives and the hatchet. So I guess knowing how to sharpen and treat knifes make them a great deal for me! But I guess some people walk into a ford dealership looking for a Farrari

Interesting design and made in 1095 rather than the usual 1066. I have a few BPS knives and quality can be a bit hit or miss. Overall, they are still a great value. Thanks for sharing Rob

I was wrong, it's 1066 , looked like 1095 on the blade.

According to the website it's 1066 carbon steel and 2,8 mm thick. To me anything less thick than 3mm doesn't need a saber grind for outdoor use. 4mm or thicker and still want it to be a good food prep knife (slicer) a flat or high saber grind does make sense. On this one it's a miss. They just wanted the knife to look like the DBG (Dutch Bushcraft Girls) knife and charge extra so they can get their 10%. So the knife needs work, the sheath is leather but rubbish, the handle from the firesteel comes off. Get a new sheath and fix the other problems and it's no longer a budget knife. You can get a Joker knife with micarta scales for the same price and you don't have to fix anything and have perfect fit and finish.. I'm not talking down on BPS. Take for instance the Adventurer by BPS. You now have about the same knife but better at food prep, a firesteel and a leather sheath that works and it's even cheaper (10% cheaper). You can buy and start using that knife without having to fix anything and now we're talking about a budget outdoor knife.

It is 1066, I got it wrong, I've yet to try a joker, I only hear good things about them , it's definitely thicker than 2.8mm and I agree that it's too thin for a sabre grind.

The bps knives I’ve gotten so far I would argue the sheathe is worth as much as the knife, kinda crazy how badly they messed this one up considering they could’ve used the standard sheathe they had already.

Great and fair review I have two of theirs A small one and a big one Can’t remember the numbers Both arrived wicked sharp with scandi zero grind Excellent users The small one backpacking The sheath is a little flimsy but the newer one have better leather The large one an amazing field knife

If you're on a budget, I think for £50 and a couple of hours work you could turn that into a reasonable knife and the work that goes into it will make it personal to the owner which will give it more appeal than a cheap Mora to some people.
@RobEvansWoodsman6 ай бұрын
I like that way of looking at it.

Good point on smooth steel - just got the Savage which is rough and rusts like crazy. My other BPS is like a mirror and vastly better. Thanks for your expertise.
@LoreTunderin6 ай бұрын
That's unfortunate about the ferro handle and the sheath retention strap. The leather they use is great, I replaced the sheath that came with my Bark River knives with BPS sheaths that fit perfectly and are better quality.

Its a fair assessment. I think they are inconsistent. I have one of these knives and it doesn't have all of the defects that yours has. But as you mentioned, its hard to beat the knife at the price. Great video! Thanks!

Wow, what a blunt knife! I'd expect sharp from the box. I keep mine all scalpel sharp. I have 3 Mora knives. I have a few Opinels, my main knife is an old MOD knife.

I believe these are 1066 not 1095. I would buy one instantly if they were 1095.

Same. Even though i dont like the wooden handle and particularly the weak spot near the choil that will crack that Rob mentions. But i have a 1095 BK7 that hangs above my wood stove in my basement to bust up kindling and havent had to touch up the edge in 3 season! I hear the 1066 is not as good
@dmitryk7546 ай бұрын
agree with review, except the grind is pretty thick for a small knife. Recommend regrind to thinner bevel, but a commercial company would be hesitant to do it at such a low price. They will get too many complaints :)

Great vid! Thanks for sharing. I think the steel is 1066 carbon?

Not for me, as you say you can't go wrong with a mora, not a chance on earth I'd pay a ton for that even with decent scales on. It's a cheap and cheerful knife okay but not for me. Thanks for showing it though.👍🏻
@mrc22056 ай бұрын
It looks like a nice shaped knife, but even a cheaper knife should be sharp. I would definitely go for a Mora, I can rely on what I get. 😊

It won't be used long term as I'm going to give it away on a member giveaway after a little modification.
@dmitryk7546 ай бұрын
This is not 1095, its SAE 1066, 60% carton compared to 95% carbon. It's a simplest of spring steels I think. It's fine for a hard use knife, but definitely as simple as it gets.
@klausheisler50146 ай бұрын
They must have applied a DBK tax to it. They have other (larger) scandi models for less.

I'm huge fan of Mora, recently found out that, here in Bulgaria, we have a nice knife company called Manly. Now I'm in love with those blades. Got a D2 fixed knife model called Patriot, small beast. Tho its not scandi. There also other models with different sizes and steel types like cpm 154, rwl 34. What is your opinion on them if you are familiar?
@RobEvansWoodsman6 ай бұрын
Manly knives look really good, no nonsense knives.

Watched a review by someone whining about the Mora Garberg.Carbon today. Basically the same very minor issues that were mostly personal preference, and evidently a general complete lack of knowledge about the sheath system or how to make inexpensive non invasive add one so that the retention strap can still be used WITH a much better belt loop.idea, so guy was belittling Bush crafting , fire craft etc. I did NOT subscribe, have no intention of doing so. I thought "Bud if you can't look.around and find simple modifications to easily improve a Garbetg, please don't buy a BPS!" 😂 I enjoy little projects like this tho!😂

Hey mate, the steel is 1066, not 1095. The specs on their website state that. Is it only me or it rusts fairly easy?
@RobEvansWoodsman6 ай бұрын
Sorry I got the steel wrong.
@Slasher0066 ай бұрын
I have one. I like the knive but the sheath is horseshit. I use a sheeth from my BS2FT wich works very well. Mine has a very pointy tip and the firesteel is firm in the wood. I think they should use there standard sheath and scap this one. I dont mind a knive that needs a little work. The B1 that i also own needed a bit because it had sharp edges on the handlepart. Unscrewed the scales and get rid of the bur with a small file. Now its perfect.

Finish on the wood moras are terrible for the money, I was going to buy one for a review but when I saw them I didn't bother.
@piotriwaszko22956 ай бұрын
If you put a few hours of work into it, they would be much much better. It's a pity, because the knife has a lot of potential in my opinion 💪🏻.
@RobEvansWoodsman6 ай бұрын
It definitely has potential, it's just a shame that sheath was terrible, a simple taco sheath would be more practical and easier to make.
@piotriwaszko22956 ай бұрын
However, it must be admitted that the sheath is made of very good leather and well finished. I hope that BPS will draw constructive conclusions, because they have the potential to become a Premium brand (within a reasonable budget) in the future. I keep my fingers crossed for them 💪

@RobEvansWoodsman PS I purchased the extra sheath with ferro rod tube for their Woodlore/Condor clone direct from BPS so I had a spare sheath, there is a degree of commonality in fit between sheaths for the same blade length despite their style so voila I had a good sheath for the DBK knife no tube however, thus will do however till I employ my limited skills in an attempt to modify the original (the stud unscrews)
