I think Braavos caused the Doom of Valyria. The dragon lords were about to break their promise with Braavos, so the Iron Bank paid the Faceless Men to detonate the mines beneath the peninsula.

Slavers Bay/Essos is based on the Italian city states of the 15th & 16th century. Braavos clearly takes huge inspiration from Venice but with a few influences from elsewhere thrown in

The fact that Athens was the first City state known to make it illegal for their own people to become slaves at odds with the Spartans, Athens again having temples to foreign Gods, Especially Egyptian ones, since they became the Rulers of Egypt also ... Banks were a thing in ancient Greece, with 2 main kinds ... Merchant banks and temple banks, with legislation on the temple banks to stop them growing too powerful... So glad I found this video. Braavos always seemed to be worthy of its own show. So many cool aspects to it linked in Mediterranean history. Spanish style fencers, a colossus at it's entrance like ancient Greek Rhodes & purple dye like that of the Phoenicians 😍

Braavos where do they get their foods, they should be south of essos or mid essos. They should also own a large lands and farming because Vencia did owned a good farm and lands aka real life Braavos.

Kings landing has half a million that is equivalent of a modern city with 8 or 5 millions people living there. London around 1300 population was like less or more then 80 000

Sahil Singh the main line of books don’t give too much background on non-Westerosi areas. Definitely more than the show, but more limited. A World of Ice and Fire is the main source for this information.

Braavos was a secret city. They are hiding from the dragon lords coz they were slaves. Dragon lords died in Doom of Valyria along with their dragons. They revealed themselves to the world later, and made gifts to the remaining dragon lords for them to not invade Bravos. Also, they will gain nothing from conquering Bravos than keeping it alive for it's gold and resources. Bravos's Iron Bank make lot of allies.
