How does a £80 ($100) Brad Nailer fair against more expensive brands. In this video we take a look at a cheap tool from ALDI, a UK Discount Supermarket, and find out if it offers value for money or is complete rubbish. For 2019 ALDI are marketing it under their FERREX tool branding.
The tool is a fairly common design and examples can be found from other brands including:
Freeman
VonHaus
Knox
Air Impact
and Clarke Power Tools.
In the US Harbour Freight do a very similar design. Plus before Ryobi introduced their One+ battery system, they also produced the very same design of brad nailer.
A key feature of this tool is that it can fire both brad nails and staples.

The Aldi Ferrex nailer is a hard machine to find when it's not in store. The Katsu 18ga Nailer is basically the same machine and available at Amazon: amzn.to/3bjiLsT it has reasonable reviews and having seen the machine in-person recently it appears to have a similar level of quality and performance. At £129 it's almost the cheapest machine you can buy.

Great review, I have an air nailer and wasn't looking to buy another nailer...but I find that having to fire up the compressor every time I want to use it makes me use it less and less. This might be a better idea for me and I love the WORKZONE stuff from Aldi, everything I've bought seems to be very robust and does exactly what it should...maybe sometimes without the whistles and bells but hey...it is what it is! :)

I've never had Nailer before so when I saw this one in Aldi I decided to buy one. I'm very pleased with it and use it whenever I can. It has worked faultlessly so far. I do agree that it is heavy. My only 'gripe' about the gun is that it is not obvious where to 'aim' the tip to put the nail just where you want it to be..? What I ended up doing was putting a line on the faces of the yellow tip to help me line up where I want the nail to go... I hope this makes sense?

Nice review of an electric nail gun, bet those rubber pads don't last long before they go through though. I'd stick to the air driven brad nailer simply because of the flexibility of turning up or down the pressure depending on what sort of wood you're working with. The trouble with electric is when the battery starts to weaken the brads tend to sit above the surface and you start to get feed jams which is a real ball ache. Even the plug in nailers are renowned for feed jams. I'd like to see how you get on with this nailer over time and actual use rather than an out the box test.

I’ve just bought a Titan today to replace a Stanley that lasted one and half uses, taught me never to buy tools off Amazon again as I was out of my return time. Both of mine have required two hand operation with one hand one the rear of the tool. This makes it very awkward as I make photograph frames and It’s impossible to hold the mitred joint in place whilst I use my nailer. I wish I'd seen this review first. I don’t think you stated the price? The one I bought today was £35 off Screw Fix and the previous rubbish was about £25 off Amazon. I don’t need a top of the range for any of my tools, I just need reliable. Great review which randomly turned up in my recommendations...a day too late! Oh KZbin, you have a cruel sense of humour! I see in the description it was £80, thank you.

Strawbyte Workshop In all honesty I've never had any problems with Amazon returns within the 30 days, they’ve always been very helpful there. Stanley were quite unhelpful on their website with the chat, they were telling me to take my nailer to a shop in Liverpool who are one of their service centres. They would tell me there if I was able to return it or not. I live in Preston, and both my wife and I have disabilities and if there’s no parking we are stuffed. If I buy from Screw Fix they are 3.3 miles away, I could even get there on my mobility scooter if I have something to return or nip in on my way home from work.

Just a quick note:- this nailer may be a bit heavy for the job of fixing picture frames? It tends to mark the moulding. I discovered this when I was putting up mitred trim on wainscotting. You can get round this to some extent, by holding the nailer 'square ' to the face and not pressing too hard. Hope this helps.

John Ball Thanks John, I’ll bear that in mind. Although I’m giving the framed images away I want them to be the best quality possible for the charity who gets them will be able to raise more money. I don’t want to do anything that will bounce back of their reputation as they are incredibly important to me. I’ve got the print and mounting spot on with 360grm A3+ paper, archival inks, 4mm UV protective anti glare Perspex (glass of the same quality it too expensive and would be over £100 per print) and beautiful mount board. So I want the frames to be better quality than you can buy from the average shop. Hence your advice could end up priceless and I’m genuinely very grateful. I’m also using splines which are more decorative than holding together and I have a Woodcraft hidden screw jig which I’m actually using with Kreg screws. I thought frames would be easy but I'm on a massive learning curve.

@johncoops6897 2 жыл бұрын
@@markharris5771 - for picture framing you should be using a Micro Pinner (23ga) or a V-Stapler, which are the correct tools for the job. Both are considerably smaller, lighter and more maneuverable than this thing, which is designed for Brad Nails and construction projects. That said, this thing is also huge because it's battery powered, so if you want a small and light tool then you need to get Pneumatic, not this DIY toy.

A decent honest review. I needed to break a lot of concrete - saw the Aldi concrete breaker for sale - and pricing between the tool rental shops and Aldi figured the price I would pay was 4 days tool rental. So I gave it a go hoping for 4 days worth and I tell you it is a proper and solid tool - needs oil topped up in a reservoir and everything. Still chugging along when I need it - which was even more than I figured. So yeah, thanks Aldi.

I get asked this sort of question often. 18ga Brad's are very narrow and while they have reasonable holding power they fail when exposed to weather. A small storage box I made using Brad's began to fall apart after a couple of years. So I would say no they're not suitable.

I have a Ryobi and it wonderful. It’s never jammed. I previously had a cheap corded nailer which failed after a short while. However I didn’t like it anyway because of the sound and the unpleasant recoil. The Ryobi can be bought cheaper from America on eBay and they also do perfectly good cheaper batteries. It’s a quality product. The toolzone looks to be similar in action, but will it last? I wouldn’t be without a cordless Brad nailer.

There's no oiling recommended in the manual, from what I recall. That said when I have had jam and had the firing head apart, I've used a little 3-in-1 on the inside of the parts. The biggest factor for me when I get inconsistent results has been the nails themselves - if they feel rough to the touch I give them a light sand with 400 grit wet/dry paper.

@StrawbyteWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
The staples are best for fencing projects but 20 mm us quite thick and you'll only get 10mm in the timber you're nailing into. Nails would give you the depth but at 18 gauge, they're prone to failure out doors. 16 gauge nailer or a framing nailer would be best for that sort of application

I haven't had a situation where mine has jammed in that way. Over the course of filming I'd fired off over 400 nails and drained the battery fully twice and I was dearly wishing for a jam. You are right without it the video is not complete. But I do appreciate what you say. I've had the firing head apart and it's really not as simple as other nailers and if you had a jam I see your point. I remain delighted with mine but now have it only fire staples as I've a second nailer now.

Thanks for the response mate, greatly appreciated 👍🏼. I definitely will give that a try and see if they sell the firing pin on its own. I don’t think they will cover warranty for me as I have modified it by changing the lower part of the gun to run on Milwaukee batteries instead of the work zone ones.. it was working great until the firing pin broke I was shattered! But again thank you very much for the reply mate your a champ 👍🏼

I can't find anything showing the thickness of the tip of the nailer and where exactly the staples would be released from without the rubber cover. I need to be extremely precise with my staples and need very good clearance to get within millimeters of a perpendicular surface so this information would be very helpful.

I always do a test fire on a scrap piece against a pencil mark to get my eye in. As for getting it upright try placing the tip on the workpiece and then rotate it by 90 degrees you your desired firing before firing. I always find that helps with getting the nailer, or any drill for that matter, plumb to the work.

Aldi have a terrible mix of battery platforms now. I did a follow-up video on modifying an Ebauer battery for use but when I later realised that you need both the battery and Ebauer's charger for it to work the solution wasn't as cheap an alternative. I rang the support line and ordered addition batteries through there. If you have it insist you need an new battery. But the default charger isn't great. But you only paid £80 (with change) for the tool.

It uses brads between 20 and 50mm and staples between 20 and 30 mm. I do find I use the 20mm brads a lot more than longer lengths in this particular machine. But if you're looking for a smaller nailer/stapler you ought to be looking at the Tacwise Electric Nailer/Stapler or similar machines from other manufacturers. I have a Parkside (LIDL) machine which is quite handy, especially for craft projects and picture framing.
