I have a different father than my 3 older siblings. I came late. My dad took in 3 young kids, loved him as his own, took them places, did things with them, taught them to swim. When my oldest brother got married he dedicated this song to him and danced with him. My dad cried his eyes out like sobbing. Unfortunately he passed three months before my sister got married. She played this song for him for the father daughter dance. My brothers, my mom, my grandma, my stepgrandpa, my aunt, her hubby all just gathered in a huge circle, danced and cried

This always makes me tear up. I married my husband when my son was nine. My son's father was not a constant in his life, and my husband wound up being Dad to him. My husband and I just celebrated twenty-one years of marriage, and my husband is still always there for my son, and my son knows he can always go to him when needed. Love, love, love this song.

My mom was also a single mother of seven, then she met my dad, they got married and had me. Dad loved all the children as much as he loved me and raised us all the same, no partiality was ever shown between my brothers and sisters and me. Dad used to say that the only steps in our house are the ones that go upstairs. Mom and dad worked hard for us all and there was a lot of love in our home. They are both gone now and I as well as my brothers and sisters miss them so much.

Thank you for the lovely reaction! This song always brings me sweet memories of my late husband. When I fled an abusive husband and hid with 3 babies, I figured I would always be alone, I didn't even try to find someone, but an amazing single dad came into my life and we merged 2 single parent homes into one, he was wonderful. I felt SO blessed.

My stepfather came into my life when I was a toddler, and my parents married when I was 5. He was in my life as long as I could remember. It wasn’t until I was older that I appreciated all the love, stability, and support he brought to our lives. He left us due to Parkinson’s a few years back and this song always reminds me of what a good, decent father he was when he didn’t have to be ❤

When I was 7 years old, my mom started dating a man with four kids. He had one still living at home. They got married a couple months after I turned 9. I'm 46 now, and Pops is 82. My dad always said he was so grateful that my mom married Pops because he was such a good man. Dad died when he was 49. Pops is still with is, but he has Alzheimer's. I was blessed to have both of my dads in my life. My mom and stepmom got along as well. It's rare, but it happens.

I was so blessed to have my dad become my daddy when I was just 2 yrs old. I lost him when he was 44 and not a single day goes by that I don't miss him. I have also lost my mom and I can't stress enough to people that if they are blessed enough to have their parents (and they are able) to please let them know that they are loved and if possible record their voice and take video and pictures because there will come a day when you will wish you had those.

As a single man, this is the song which gives me lots of love for single mothers with children who need a father. It’s just sad that most avoid them just because they’re not theirs biologically and it’s “not good for men to be stepfathers”. I simply and strongly believe that, if you’re a real man, you genuinely care for all children without fathers and want to provide them with protection and be a good role model.

I had 2 kids when I started dating my husband who has no kids. His friend, who was divorced with 2 kids himself told him he shouldn't date me because I had too much baggage. I was shocked but learned there's a lot of divorced fathers who view single moms as too much baggage, as if they themselves don't have any. And the funny part is I had far less baggage than that single dad. My kids have different dads but neither were really in the picture and always respectful of my husband's place whereas his friend had an ex wife who was constantly ruining relationships and 2 kids who would push away any one their parents dated because they wanted them back together.

@@juliejenkins8897 indeed, it’s a sad reality when people value others opinions more instead of forming their own values, beliefs and opinions. I’m happy for you that you found a man willing to be your husband and the father of your children.

Except for the fact that this is written from a male perspective, this song feels like it was written about my life. I have a bio father (who I never really knew) and I have a daddy. My daddy came into my life when I was five, even taking me on his and my mom's first date (just like the song). I've learned a lot about love from others but more than anyone, from him. I can still remember where I was when I first heard this song.

This was me and my dad. I was 1 year old when he married my mom, and there were 3 of us. My biological father and mom divorced, and she married my dad, and he adopted me and my older brother and sister, and we have his last name. We were never treated as stepchildren even after he and mom and two more kids. I did reconcile with my biological dad in my 30's, I met him once before he passed away, but between him and my dad I have 13 brothers and sisters, and we all are friends...I'm now 61....

My dad met my mom shortly after she had me. She was a single mom back in the 60's when this was a much bigger social scandal than it is today. We both won the lottery with this man. He married my mama, and then adopted me. Two days after the adoption papers were finalized, my dad died from a freak heart attack in his early 40's. I suspect it was probably more to do with an arrhythmia, and if it had happened a few years later he probably could have been fitted with a pacemaker. Mom never remarried, she didn't even date a guy until I was very nearly a grown a man myself. While we didn't have a long time to be together, I'm thankful to God for my Dad and his courage to step up and be a man and the example I would need for the rest of my life.

This is the song/story of my life. The dad I was raised by wasn’t my birth father but took the role on before I was even born after the other one took off. He didn’t have to step up and do that but I am so thankful that he did and for everything I learned from him. Since life comes full circle many times I wound up doing the same thing. Met my wife when she already had 3 kids and tried my best to raise them the best i can and also have 2 together.

I had 4 stepfathers. My father was far away. Somehow, I on my own gained a Pappy. After Korea and Vietnam. This man stepped up. When I got out of the service, He was the only one who would face me. He saw me at my worst and never showed an ounce of fear. It was the worst time in my life. He never judged me for it. It was his gentle guidance that brought me back to life. He pasted away years ago. I hate to think where I'd be today If one ole man/soldier hadn't bought me a cup of coffee. I love and miss him every day.

I was adopted in 1951. My mother drove three and a half hours to pick me up. I was at the Salvation Army in San Antonio Tx. I was told she walked in to pick me up, and I was mad at the the whole world. I was evidently wet, and not happy about it.She held out her arms, and I happily left with this strange new person. She drove me home, and placed me in a homemade playpen that she had made. About two hours later, the man who was to be my father, hero, and teacher walked in. She said he stopped, looked at me and smiled. And I looked at him and smiled back. It was love at first sight, and forever. He became the dad he didn't have to be.

As a country fan of this kind of music, I've always felt very protective over it since country, especially because of modern country, gets overshadowed by the stereotypes that people think of. So it's very refreshing to see a self-proclaimed former country hater (lol) watch and listen and appreciate the art and storytelling that is country music.

I know how this song touches all of us! I just want to recognize one additional thing. Even though the "dad" had done all these things for the mom and the stepson, he still didn't appear (in the video) to be interjecting himself into the family moments he loved at the end of the video. He was standing in the background and watching. It was enough for him to witness the love and satisfaction from across the room. I had 4 children when my husband of 42 years met me and this is his story.

This song shows that being a father does not mean you have to be blood relatives. I've known many men that have contributed to the genetic makeup of a child, but have absolutely no ability to be a father. It sometimes takes someone else to step into a child's life to actually be the parent

I wanna shout out to the rooftops my grandpa, Who stepped up at 22 with my grandma and two year old mom, my mom, who raised my two half brothers exactly like her own, and my brother in law, who treats my sisters oldest son just like the two they biologically share. They all freakin rock

This is exactly what happened 2 my daughter & I ❤ I had all but given up on finding true love because the few guys that I dated as a songle mom seemed 2 not want her around. Until I met my now hubby ❤ He never asked me 2 do anything without asking for my daughter 2 join...& she was only 2 at the time... so every time we did anything...it was something he knew she would enjoy... usually the park ❤ Now...we have 2 more kids together & never once has he ever treated my daughter any different than when we first started talking ❤ He has both our hearts ❤❤

I saw a documentary about Brad Paisley when he first got big. Here’s the story of this song. Brad had recorded an album but the studio wasn’t releasing it because sales were slow across the industry and the timing didn’t work for them. He was pretty frustrated but went back to doing what he does. There were two or three other guys who he wrote songs with routinely and while they were together, one of them mentioned that he was about to become a stepdad. They got to talking about the responsibilities he was taking on and this song was the result. Fanfair is an annual event in Nashville where artists signed to labels perform and interact with fans. He performed this song at Fanfair and the label noticed the crowd reaction and quickly added the song to the album he had already produced. I saw the doc on cable but I don’t remember the channel. He was interviewed extensively and talked about how much bigger the album was and how what he took as a failure launched his career. I may be fuzzy on the details so please feel free to fact check. ETA: all that to say he writes with the same people so it would sound similar.

I was 10 years old when my mom married my step-father. I remember clearly he said, “The only steps we have in this family are the ones leading to the bedrooms.” From that point on, he was my dad. When this song came out, I had just finished driving my kids to school (we lived in Minnesota and it was one of the super cold days) and I had to pull over because I was crying so hard after hearing the first verse! That night, I asked my husband if we could use that song to create a video for my dad of him with me and our kids (his grandkids - no steps in our family!) and send it to him for Father’s Day. It took us several months (which is good because it was ready in time for Father’s Day) to create, but we sent it to him. I think that’s the only time I ever saw him cry. His own kids forgot him on Father’s Day, but I remembered him. I lost him in 2016 (cancer sucks!!) and to this day, I still say that he’s my dad and my kids’ grandpa. I love you, Dad, and miss you every day!!

I have been doubly blessed having a fantastic father and ever devoted step-dad. My parents divorced when I was 4 and shortly after that my mom started dating the man who would become my step-dad. Now it's been 45 years, my dad has been gone for 20 years and my mom for 4 years. My step-dad never had kids of his own so my sister and I were his only kids. This last summer I was honored and blessed to be his best man when he married his new wife and I can't think of anyone who deserves happiness more. This song has deeply resonated with me for years due to my relationship with him.
