@@ingleton20 Yes, I know he's been working regularly since the late 70s, mostly in his native Germany, but what I intended was he wasn't known to Hollywood/American audiences until 2009's Inglorious Basterds, which catapulted him into a new stratosphere in his career and awareness. Tarantino is credited as 'discovering' him and giving him the audience and career he deserved. (and 20 sounds better than 15).

Every big country is like that. It is possible, easy even, to live your entire life in the US and never need to speak a foreign language. Most countries in Europe are tiny by physical comparison. Necessity leads to learning foreign languages. If you go to Spain you'll find it is more like the US in the number of people that only speak Spanish, because the country is quite large (for Europe).

As a Scandinavian I am born with three languages, four if you count the second national language which we all have to learn but hate. Then we learn English from second grade, we take German, Latin or Spanish in 8th grade and in college we can't go deeper into a language or choose a new one to learn. Remember, bi/multilingualism is the norm in Europe, where as monolingualism is the norm in USA, so they're "shocked" when people speak more than one language.

In asian countries, its usually a combo of english with their native language. To be fair, for most people that second language will be English, because it has kind of become the universal language. When my parents went on vacation in Italy for the first time, most of the people in the touristy areas would be able to speak German and for those who didn't, the tourists would pick up a few words of Italian. Nowadays everybody just starts to talk in English to each other.

Another example of a WWII movie where they have everyone speak their own language, is an older one called 'La grande Vadrouille' A fun comedy about a bunch of a British bomber crew having to eject over Paris and their crazy travel to reach the unoccupied part of France to get back to the UK in the company of two French citizens that got involved by accident. And old one, but a good one.

So, are you an old fart, like me, or just a movie buff? A sparkling comedy, indeed - you can't go wrong putting Luis de Funes and Bourvil together in a movie.

@@latze74 well, depending on who you ask I am old indeed and starting to have some trouble with my memory or still so young and having a whole lot of life experience still to discover. The difference in opinion is between my boomer parents and my genZ oldest child. But my xennial self got introduced to all those old French movies by my parents and I am glad they did. They're not only fun entertainment but also gave me a bit of a window to the time spirit that was going on when my parents were young.

Btw Walz is from Austria. Not from Germany. And yes, it's not the same. Even if Austria would like to be part of a influential nation😘

True, he's from Austria and spent all his childhood and youth in Vienna. That being said, his father was German and applied for German citizenship for Christoph. So legally, he has German AND Austrian citizenship.
@michaelgrabner8977
@michaelgrabner8977 5 ай бұрын
@@mistym0rning That´s because the law is different in Austria and Germany. In Austria the mother´s nationality is automatically valid for the child and in Germany it´s the father´s nationalty which is automatically valid for the child. So the father just had - to collect - the German citizenship for his son with no fulfilling any requirements unless being his father.. Therefore in that particular case it is very easy to have 2 citizenships which is usually not that easy in both countries at all. Imagine the father would have been Austrian and the mother would have been German then it wouldn´t had worked that way but it would had been a bit complicated not undoable but lot´s of paperwork..because the mother then had to apply for Austrian citizenship - after Christoph´s birth - as well for the same outcome, which is no problem when married to an Austrian but it´s more complicated. But Waltz stated several times that he is a proud Austrian who happens to have additionally a German passport as well.

I really admire C.W. Such a charismatic and talented actor! I don't even like the sound of German, but when he soeaks it, I just want to listen to him firever; and oh, don't even get me started on French, and Italian, my two most favorite languages after my mother tongue; I just can't get enough of him speaking those two languages. In my eyes he is an Oscar winner every time he plays in any movie! ❤❤❤❤
