The thing about Steve- sometimes we have someone close to us who keeps making the same bad choices over and over again and you eventually have to distance yourself in order to protect yourself. That's the way I see Steve at any rate.
@Bdixon91582 жыл бұрын
He’s a very realistic portrayal of someone who has been trying to support a family member struggling with addiction. I think it’s hard because we don’t see how long this has been going on. We get a glimpse but it’s been their entire adult lives. He’s exhausted. He hasn’t confronted his own traumatic childhood and he’s done. He’s paid for so many rehabs, seen Luke strung out so many times and we’re seeing him at the point where he doesn’t have hope Luke will ever get sober and stay sober.

The first adaptation of Shirley Jackson's book "The Haunting of Hill House" was made in the early 60s, a black and white film called The Haunting. My Mother raised us on it. Since I was a young tween, that scene has caused several of us in my family to not sleep with our hands dangling over the side of the bed! 😂
@ORION___2 жыл бұрын
I think Steven bitterness is understandable and normal here because this wasn't Luke first rodeo in rehab, it's literally been years of them (Nell, Shirley, Steven and Theo) been worried sick for him, trying to help him every time, putting tons of money for him (especially Steven and Shirley) while Luke always lied and stole from them... It's a bit sad how many people completely dismiss Steven feelings about the whole situation. You can love someone and be there when they truly need you, but there's a point where you just stop cause it hurts too much... Like I loved my mother so much and stayed always by her side while she was really sick. I did it without expecting nothing in return, I simply wanted to help... But at the end of the day, she never thought of me like a daughter, she was mean and completely oblivious about my life for like 12-15 years. I stayed but it was abusive and extremely painful for me. So I can understand both pov, as it always should be... Well... It's just my opinion anyway ⚰️ Great reaction Brad! and congrats for reaching almost 100.000 subscribers 💙💙💙💙
@Bdixon91582 жыл бұрын
I wanted to say I absolutely agree. It’s tough being the family support for someone battling an illness or an addiction. You love them so much and you want to help them but sometimes you’ve run out of strength and energy and money and you can’t stop supporting them cause that’s what you’ve got to do but you’ve got nothing left.
@katara20212 жыл бұрын
@@Bdixon9158 It really is hard. Alcoholism runs in my mother's immediate family and my father's extended family and I've seen firsthand the toll it takes on people. One of my uncle died in his forties because of it, another in following in his footsteps, and my uncle-in-law has destroyed his liver and has almost died twice in the past two years. Their family's tried everything and nothing worked.
@8bitbee1482 жыл бұрын
Stevens feelings are totally understandable, but he’s really sabotaging Luke’s recovery here which in turn is sabotaging himself, so I can also understand people being upset with him. It also doesn’t help that he’s been kind of a wanker already in earlier episodes. Steven is probably my least favorite character in the cast, but I def don’t hate him (the cast is just THAT good), he plays an important role in the story and has lots of depth!
@ORION___2 жыл бұрын
@@8bitbee148 I totally agree this behavior definitely doesn't help anyone, but I kind of hate how most people dismiss his feelings and how fucked up he is. Compared to what Nell, Luke and even Theo saw and experienced, Steven and Shirley lived pretty well till now but they suffered just like the others and completely ignoring it shows exactly how society views depression, anxiety and mental illness in general related to loss and anger for something that happened in someone's life. Steven isn't my favorite but I understand why he act like an asshole. "Just because someone is a good person, just because you care about them, doesn't mean they won't burn you", everyone seems to hate him for saying this to Luke, but again he's not wrong. It's normal having preference and connecting to some characters more but I just don't get how people can't understand his pov...

Like, it’s always been a “hey, she has that poster there, weird, maybe it influenced her…” but not 🙄 There was also another one about their interactions where I thought ‘holy shit, he’s going to lose his mind over it in a few episodes,’ so I can’t wait to see that too.

Aw sweet Lukey, my heart breaks for him. Imo his headlights monologue is super meaningful and metaphorical in relation to the house: yellow lights bring hope, red lights take all hope away. The Mom's eyes here? Yellow. Pay attention to color choices later on. Also, I know Steve is an asshole but I have such a sympathetic soft spot for him. He is severely in denial about things: he has decided on a few narratives to explain his childhood that we learn later on (which are VERY justified interpretations imo) & because of this narrative he is a very closed off and cynical individual. I do fault him for some of his behavior but I have huuge sympathy for his anger and cynicism, which is just the manifestation of his response to trauma and his feeling of being powerless most of his life.

Jump Scare Galore….ironic that you’ve chosen that for eps 3 & 4….just saying. The way you called adorable, 6-year old Luke a prick for breathing too loud had me rolling. Relatable. The stress of some of these scenes brings out the worst in us.🤣🤣 I’m one of those that rewatches this series. I saw a comment on another reaction that said this, so it’s not my original thought, but it’s so true: Mike Flanagan has created his own genre…Heartfelt Horror. It’s so accurate. The scares are definitely there, but the characters are always the centerpiece and it’s always beautifully told. I absolutely love this series. Bly is great and I love Midnight Mass, but there’s just something about Hill House. It’s so, SO good. Thank you for reacting to it!

My favorite, but Theo is a very close second. Also, I just wanted to say I very very much appreciate and am impressed by you including trigger warnings for these episodes. I think I've only seen one reactor ever do that and it's a shame. Good on you. Oh and one more thing! Theo is a "touch-know" (is capable of psychometry) --- it's not scientifically proven to be real, but it's interesting to read over. The only reason I knew about it when I got to this episode during my own first watch is actually because I watched Stephen King's Rose Red as a child and one of the characters in that mini-series had that ability as well.

I'm so happy you're watching this show! Love your reactions, you're so fun to watch 💕 I definitely understand the Steve dislike / hatred, I think pretty much everyone who watches this show has the hardest time empathizing with him, unfortunately for reasons that are legitimate lmao I watched a great video essay about Hill House and when they talked about Steve they mentioned how much he lives in denial, even when he experiences things first hand or is directly told things because he's actually very much terrified of the possibility that his whole family is just "crazy", himself included. He hates the fact that his family's been through so much shit and pain, but... Communication is lacking lmao I think that's why he's so cold and a big jerk sometimes, he's trying to distance himself from the wild stuff but he ends up hurting people.
