Blimey Darren, it doesn’t seem that long ago when I watched your video on Bradford with the ‘Bradford 2024’ sign outside that lovely building. I must be getting old. From a foot shopper/diners perspective, pedestrianisation is great. I don’t think anyone will argue with that. The area does look very nice and I am sure it will invite more shops and customers to the area. Even if they are coffee shops with outdoor seating. It all brings footfall. After all, you can’t sell anything if there is no one there. But from a utilities point of view, pedestrianisation is a nightmare. Before I retired I worked for a national communications company and working on pedestrianised streets was really awkward and made life a lot more difficult. But it sure looks good. Thank you for all your vlogs this year, I don’t think that I have missed one. Seasons greetings to you and your family and all the very best for 2025. Keep those vlogs coming! You have another coffee to enjoy. Thanks once again.

I’m a Bradfordian and proud one at that. We love going into town for our pre-match footy drinks on a Saturday, but visits to the city centre really do highlight where the council has got so many things wrong over the past twenty years, and the number of glaring cock ups have been. The footfall around the centre is minimal. On a night out everywhere’s half empty. A place like Sunbridge Wells which would be packed every night in most other centres across the country, feels like it’s dying. The independent shops all close within months in there, as do the bars outside of the main two. The first priority should be increasing good quality city centre living - there’s very little compared to places like Leeds and Manchester, cities that have increased the population of their relative centres by over 500% over the last 20 years. This then fuels the night time economy as a consequence. It’s lovely to have pedestrianised green areas, but is that really what people go to a city centre for?! Bradford is surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s as accessible for all around as the centre is. Use the space to build business parks and inject some more investment into the city. A green area is pleasant to walk through, but doesn’t address Bradford’s most pressing issues. Bradford Live - meant to be open months ago - no sign of it opening any time soon! Darley Street Market, originally to be opened last year, then pushed back to April, then September - and still not open! Why?! People just thinking outside the box a bit for quick wins - all those small independent outlets in Sunbridge Wells all the way up the main tunnel - all shut at present. Why not allow vendors to rent for a daily rate? Just to give them a chance? Or have a little independent market in there once a week or something? The city has been consistently let down for decades by a lack of vision of those holding the purse strings, and an even bigger lack of execution in the projects that they originally set out. Meanwhile we loom around us at cities like Leeds and Manchester absolutely thriving because the people who have directed these cities have vision and recognise social trends. Bradford council is run as it was 50 years ago, but with a bit more emphasis on useless green space. Such a shame how much the city has been let down by those governing it.

Was born and brought up in Bradford but left over 30 years ago really glad I did. But my mother still lives in the city but now finds it nearly impossible to easily get from one end of the town to the other because of all the pedestrianisation. Right you need a major reset on your understanding of what has gone on. Don’t forget for near 10 years there was massive hole in the city centre after Westfield pulled out of their planned development during the global financial crisis. During that time other cities flourished while Bradford was left to rot with no real investment and a massive eyesore. That had nothing to do with the council, if anything they were left with that situation. So before you go pointing fingers do your research.

I live in Derry, the first city of culture back in 2013. If I remember correctly, the city got about £250 million for preparations. I have to say though, not much came of it. If you look at Google Maps from 2009, the city looked far nicer back then than it does in 2024. I love this place and there’s a lot of people who do their best to make it a great place to live, but there’s only so much you can do when there’s derelict buildings and decaying shopfronts everywhere you look. With that said, I’ve only been to Bradford a couple of times in my life and just from this video, it looks a lot nicer than I remember it. It does seem like things are on the up for Bradford, and I hope this is the boost it needs to bring it back to its former glory days.
@danielgardecki104610 күн бұрын
The glory days will never come back... Biggest and best nightclubs - All gone, never to return, as two of the biggest buildings which contained 3 of them plus a large pre-drinks bar have been converted into other things, plus the guy who owns most of the other has kept them closed for the majority of the last 17+ years. They're now spread out, rather than being in one area, and are mainly smaller clubs and bars now. A lot of the flagship shops - Closed - But don't worry, we've kept our flagship shop in Leeds open. Having a hole in the ground for 15+ years killed off most of the big shops and customers. All we've been doing since The Broadway was built is relocating shops we already had, and replacing some of the units they left behind with poor quality shops. And now this - Every build or renovation we do takes longer than the council expected, and costs much much more than the council expected. Then when they're finally complete, they're sat empty for months/years/forever, yet still they insist on building more "offices" which we don't need, as we have 1000s of mills, factories, warehouses, office blocks etc sat empty already. The traffic was bad before the works started. Then The Interchange was closed for most of 2024, while they investigated possible structural problems, but will be reopen early next year. And now all the roads in the city centre are gone, with a new bus lane raking in 100s of 1000s in fines, and more vehicle sized cycle lanes which no-one uses, therefore the traffic is now even more ridiculous than it was before. They just love wasting money on things which no-one asked for, while we're on the brink of bankruptcy, yet things we actually need they ignore.

I think what Bradford is doing is a good thing. It’s trying to model itself after cities in Europe like Eindhoven. Admittedly we’re not as flat as that city but for too long cities in the UK have pandered to the car driver and so the vision for the 15 minute city that will drive cleaner air and more cafe culture is something I fully support. People forget that Bradford was a major casualty of the global financial crisis which resulted in a massive hole in the centre for nearly 10 years. Recovering from that will take a long time and finally investment is being put into the centre. Regardless of what people think, decisions have been made that they can’t go back on and I for one hope the dregs in the centre and the run down 1970s buildings are pulled down and a new open air walking city centre with nice outdoor spaces and a cafe culture will drive more people living into the centre which will in turn create more shops and restaurants for these people. Too many people are quick to criticise and totally offer no alternative view of what they would have done when faced with the challenges that this city has faced.
