The following is on the description of the documentary,
The threshold of a new millennium is an ideal point to review the recent past of Bradford and to examine what effect the last hundred years have had on its citizens. Who could have imagined, as the people of Bradford prepared to celebrate the dawn of the 20th Century, the momentous changes about to take place in industry and commerce , living and working conditions, sport and entertainment.
We reflect on these events with the help of people who experienced them and who share with us a century of triumphs and tragedy, war and peace, hardship and good times.
Written and researched by local historian Dr Gary Firth, the historical background of these major Twentieth Century changes is clearly explained.
Incorporating interviews with local characters and beautifully illustrated with archive film, photographs and modern footage.

A lovely documentary, brought back many memories of my first 22 years of life first in West Bowling (back to back terrace housing), then a new semi-detached - with an actual inside toilet!! - up Haworth Road and finally a lovely old semi-detached in Baildon. I left Bradford in 1967 to become a "Ten pound Pom" and have lived most of the rest of my life in Western Australia. But I will never forget my early days, I'm still glad that I grew up where and when I did, and I still watch Bradford City AFC via a streaming service. Again, thanks for the wonderful memories.

Such a shame what has happened to this city. Years of urban neglect by the council of not transforming old mills into liveable spaces. Corruption at trying to sell the Odeon and it being saved by the public - a historic building left to ruin. That council has a lot to answer for - now you have a major run down city centre that hardly anyone goes to... if any city needs rescuing it is Bradford - and that's a shame as in the 80s and 90s it was a hive of activity.

the Islamic influx has ruined Bradford, and any one who lives here knows that. But nobody says it. I walked through the city centre yesterday, and it took almost 20 minutes before I heard a British accent. I saw DOZENS of gangs of fighting age foreigners, hanging around once their 4 star hotels boot them out, hanging round the town centre, harassing young girls, cheeking elderly women, being rude and aggressive, and openly spitting at white folks feet. I hate them, but I didn't used to... Bradford has made me racist, and that's their fault. rapists and heroin dealing terrorist supporters dominate this city now.

What a wonderful documentary - thank you. I was born in 1972 in Bradford and lived there until 5 years ago - I then moved overseas. I miss many things about the area and frequently travel back to see family and the amazing countryside close by :-)

Great to see and hear the Bradfordians interviewed. I agree a number of treasured buildings were lost in the 1960s and 1970s. The old Kirkgate Market would have been a jewel in Bradford now with some imaginative ideas but they weren’t too imaginative in the 1970s. Now its successor the Kirkgate Shopping Centre is being prepared for demolition. Mind you it is a fairly horrible building. The part near the top of Ivegate could not be uglier. There are still some lovely buildings in Bradford. I just hope in the future we can keep the best of them and build some beautiful buildings to add to the Bradford story. I enjoyed this super film about Bradford. Where my parents grew up and worked - Brown Muffs, English Electric, Crofts, Tankards Mill.

Great documentary,imagine the shock of seeing myself as a small boy in Santa’s grotto,on a regular visit to Busby’s with my Mother.Remember the young Girl encouraging me to smile,also the beret my mother insisted I wear.Can remember my first encounter with Santa,never forget it.Don’t think my Mother bought the photo,but then my Father was a keen amateur photographer,so had hundreds of photographs of their only child.

Hello, i too, went to Busby's, with my mother, and brother, Paul, to see Santa, back in 69 when I was 5 Sadly she gone now, but she made it so, soooo special for us, and I'll never forget, those special times, that we had as children, at Christmas, miss ya mum.😢

Very enjoyable, reacquainting myself with the history of Bradford. So many familiar sights. As a youngster growing up in the late 60's and early 70's I witnessed the changes as older parts of Bradford were demolished to make way for the new Carlton Bolling school. I remember the last years of the trolley busses especially around the Church Bank / Leeds Road area.

Glad you enjoyed it, for years I was trying to find this documentary online but could never find a full version so I ended up burning the DVD onto a computer myself to show everyone else. Its one of the better Bradford documentaries in my opinion.

I played in salts mill when empty - late 70s - I found an accident book . Big leather ledger thing . First entries were turn of century - broken wrists . Hair pulled etc . That’s what I remember . Big wicker baskets on wheels & plastic bobbins and sample cards strewn all over . Happy days exploring . I think it gave me an appriecation for my local history . Grandparents worked there Also . I grew up 5 mins away and the mill was a major feature on the beautiful green landscape . Happy days !

What a lovely documentary. I'm not from Bradford and have never been there. I grew up in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, so there are similarities which I can identify with, plus, I find the history etc, fascinating in places, particularly in the north of England. It's a shame they demolished some of the old buildings in the city years ago, but I guess that unfortunately happens in a lot of towns a cities up and down the country. Thanks for posting this video.

@@tdoran616 ... oh, really ... that's terrible, the Council's don't seem to care much do they. It always saddens me when beautiful victorian buildings get flattened, only for some cheap monstrosity to get built in it's place, which probably won't even last as long as the one that was demolished.

there is no economic decline. Leeds is Europe's fastest developing city and has been for almost 2 decades There is BILLIONS in investment opportunities, but our council is more concerned with finalising Bradford status as a sanctuary city, meaning 40,000 extra heads, most of them not even speaking English, and quality of life for us taxpayers has disintegrated.

@@NiSiochainGanSaoirseBradford had a thriving wool industry,had 2 professional football clubs,city & park avenue,a top rugby league team in Bradford northern,a test cricket ground at park avenue,more millionaires,apart from London,some of the finest buildings of any city,home to many noted people in the arts,politics & literature..so what happend ? Cheap labour from abroad,middle class flight to bingley,otley and Ilkley etc,leaving a poor working class viewing for resources with a high influx of people with a different culture,as numbers and resentment grew more people now working class lost faith & pride in their city.i do not know what the future may hold for Bradford,I hope it's good,but any area or country needs unity & a belief in a shared comradeship,can that emerge from here?

Bradford, a shadow of what it use to be. I was there last year in the area and decided to pass through. A lot of superficial government investment and development is ongoing, but the city lacks well paid jobs, business investment and needs to attract people back to the city. What seems to be happening is that the money has moved out and a lot of the people too.

@tdoran616 it was actually really nice, it even had its own bakery, separate from the main kitchen, where all the bread and confectionery was made, with three bakers.....there were three chefs, a lady who did the dessert, and a lady that just made salads. All the food went down to the restaurant in a dumb waiter. ....when I was there, we had a string quartet in the minstrel gallery. The smell of coffee and fresh bread in the retail shop was out of this world. I can still feel the chair that I used to sit in , in the staff rest room.....I also worked in the Bradford business club in piece Hall yard...that was really interesting I can remember making a special fish pie for the managing director of Fatterenires....sorry when I was there it was called the Bradford Union club... changed later to the business club...Dan our head waiter came from the Talbot Hotel...
