Saltaire is one of my favourite places. Although I live down south, I always visit Saltaire and the mill when I’m ‘up north’. For me it’s a special place because of the legacy and ethos of Titus Salt. What a great man. Visiting Salts Mill always invokes a warm feeling in my heart and restores my faith in human nature. Long live Salts Mill and I hope it continues to prosper and provides joy for eternity!

My grandma and her aunts worked at salts Mill and lived in salts houses. My dad said he was really good to his workers.

Love Saltaire, the main reason why it remains beautiful is because home owners aren’t allowed to modernise with UPVC windows and doors, it’s kept with original features. Great vlog

I used to live in Saltaire. Good place. One thing, the station building disappeared for the good reason that the station was closed for many years, until WY Metro reopened it. Don’t have dates to hand but was closed for about 25 years.

The station closed in 1965 and was demolished in 1970. It reopened in 1984, though as a modern un-staffed station with just wooden platforms and shelters. To fit in with the historic area at least it got stone waiting shelters instead of the typical bus shelter type buildings of the 80s.

There also a couple of underground tunnells. There one near the top of the stairs at the mill. There some big black doors and he made that so his workers could go straight to the canteen without having to cross the road. There’s another one from Victoria hall under the road and into the collage. The opened them up a few years ago durin Saltaire festival for tours

My beloved wife ❤ & I visited Saltaire some years ago & it was absolutely amazing, so very tranquil & clean too. Unlike SO many towns & cities nowadays, there are tower blocks & council estates dotted around but my wife & I don't even recall seeing any phone mast tower's, blocks of flats or fly tipping spots. It was amazing & we went into a shop & when we asked how much the bill was, to our absolute astonishment, the nice lady informed us that you put however much money 💰 you want to pay.into a tin box!! We both thought that the lady in question was joking, but she wasn't. I was born & raised in East London but I'd absolutely love to settle down with my wife ❤ in Saltaire. Just totally adore the town's rustic aesthetic & beautiful scenery. 😏 👍

A lot of these model villages didn't have a pub because the mill owner disapproved of alcohol. Bournville still doesn't have one! On the other hand, Styal in Cheshire does have a pub. Samuel Greg, the mill owner, reckoned that his workers were going to drink anyway so he may as well have a pub in the village so he'd get the profits!

The station was closed as part of Dr Beechings railway cut backs in the 1960’s. My Dad worked for British Rail back then. I spent hours on that station as a small child. Thank you for bringing back some very happy memories. ❤️❤️

Great video, thank you. Brought back a lot of memories, I worked in the office pool at Salts mill, danced on Saturday night at the Victoria hall and had my wedding reception at the Victoria hall. Lived in Shipley on Hirstwood road loved going to Roberts Park and Shipley Glen, cost 1d to ride the tram.

Shipley Glen. My grandma used to take us out at weekends back in the 60's from Bradford to Saltaire and up the little tramway. Great days.

I've been on the Shipley glen tramway, both up and down. As far as I could tell, it's counter balanced twin cars connected by cable are controlled by the electric gear at the top manned by an operator. When in motion the machinery makes a loud whining noise until it stops, then all is quiet. At the top there used to be some amusements, dodgems etc ( not sure if they're still there ) as it's many years ago since we went there.

There's a cheap apartment block and some mews housing where the "amusements" were - sad really.

The amusements was already disused when I moved to this general area in the early 1990s. It was all demolished some years ago, and replaced by housing.

I grew up not far away in the Batley, Dewsbury area my dads side all lived in the Birkenshaw village (now uber expensive) and my most memorable times were the annual walk over Baildon Moor into Ilkley. I guess it was 8 miles or so. The walk came off the moor by the Roman bath house then the train ride back to Bradford. All great stuff when your a lad of 8+. It was a general tradition to do the moor walk and I think it was easter or whit Monday. It was generally a family get together. Took the glen railway up to the top. A house cafe and small funfair was there. There were peacock's strutting around, then the shorter walk on the escarpment rocks to a pub where the adults had liquid refreshments before the start of the moor ramble proper. Oh happy days back then in the 50's I hope this post stirs up memories in other folks.

@@AdventureMe oh thanks matey, pleasant memories from back then! I haven't been to that neck of the woods for years so I don't know if the tea rooms and funfair still exists. I know I bought an old caravan on Dobrudden farm overlooking Shipley Glen before the farm sites became sofisticated with running water and electric and proper 🚻 😂 I left Yorkshire in my early 20's and eventually ended up in Martins land but that's a story for another day!

I seem to recall from my school days (I went to school in Saltaire) hearing something about how Titus Salt used to pay his workers in his "own" currency, which could only be spent in shops, etc that he owned thus recouping some of the wages he paid out. Could be an old wives tale, can't find a record of that online. Interesting none the less. Great video, really enjoyed it.

I love Saltaire, I just wish it wasn't so expensive to live there! Still, it's only 15 minutes' train ride from Leeds or a stroll along the towpath from Shipley. A friend bought a house there recently and pre-Covid, we used to visit every September for the festival which is very well organised and attended. The Hockney gallery in the mill is lovely too and the boathouse is a great place for getting slowly sozzled by the river on a sunny afternoon. It's a pity about the bridge (and the huge trees outside the institute, though I know not everyone agrees) but it's good to hear they're going to uncover more of the cobbles - I think they should do this everywhere as they're hard wearing, much nicer to look at than tarmac and act as a natural speed restriction.

@@AdventureMe This was a great break for us, the canals, the locks the steam railway at Keighley and Saltaire topped it all off.Even had a meal in the pub, The Boathouse overlooking the river. Where we live in Co. Durham most industrial buildings etc. are destroyed by the council as if they are embarassed by them. Off the top of my head can`t remember the name of the stair case locks just up the road towards Skipton.

Sir Titus Salt also named the streets in Saltaire after members of his family, and the tramway was first a toboggan ride but was closed and changed to a tramway after a bad accident. Great video 👍

Darren, you must have filmed this the day you did Milner field! The station building must have been taken down when Saltaire ceased to be a station in 1965. It was on the Midland railway, You can also wee where the footbridge used to be, there are still remnants of the plinth, but I beileve the original platforms were wood as they are today, and they were just removed. It became a station again in 1984 when it gained World Heritage status. I often ask people this pair of questions. How many model villages can you name in England. They all get Bournville in Birmingham, and port Sunlight in Liverpool, most struggle with saltaire in Bradford (well except locals) The second question is which of those 3 cities actually had 2 model villages? The answer is Bradford, because there was Ripleyville in West Bowling. Even though there is only one terrace left! Rumour has it those lions were considered too small for Trafalgar Sq, and so the smaller ones went to Saltaire! There is actually a Saltaire in Long Island New York State!

There's an old urban myth about the street names. Where they ran out of family names, it was suggested that Lower and Upper were added. Eg. Lower Darren Road or Upper Martin Lane. The urban myth is that there's an Upper Fanny Street. There isn't. It just sounds funny to imagine it might have been considered. I was told that, after the village was allowed to sell off buildings and a pub opened, it was called Fanny's.

My mother worked in Salts Mill on leaving school until she got married in 1935. She married a Lancashire boatman so that makes me a Lancs/Yorks Hybrid - foot in both camps so to speak!

I'm so glad I live near here, having lived in Bradford most of my life, I'm glad I made the decision to move away from Bradford City centre. Away from all the noise, all the rampant drug dealing and wannabe gangsters. I finally get the quality of life I deserve. Been in this area for nearly three years, best decision I ever made compared to all the other places in Bradford.

Not cobbles they are sets, it's a common mistake because people tend to say "Cobbled streets". S o much more to explore so thank you for your visit.
