Just be careful karma don't kick your ass like it did me, my 2 Mayes dropped in on me one day, I was pumping hard as I ever had in my life to try n run over them and seriously fuck them up cuz they pissed me off .. next minute I was in the water wondering what happened, I snapped the board from pumping too hard, and it was the best board I've ever owned in 35 years of life lol

I broke my back in a wipeout back on Christmas morning, 2009. I was at Bolsa Chica and was riding my 10'6; it was high tide and the waves were just starting to feather, but not breaking a little outside - a perfect place to catch them, then ride them through the reform where once they got close to shore they broke over a nice, natural sand-groin into tight little left barrels that my board and I barely fit into if I crouched down really low. I got about 10 of these when I saw a couple guys I knew getting ready to paddle out and who were watching me. Wanting to show off, I dropped into a little barrel deeper than any before, when suddenly I was vaulted into the air when the wave ahead of the one I was riding backwashed off the beach and hit mine. Shot up into the air about 10 feet, when I came down I landed on the rail of my board just forward of the fin, cracking the rail and shattering my L2 vertebrae. I knew I was f***ed and screamed for help. The guys watching me ran down and fished me out. They carried my board back to my car as I slowly walked, barely able to put one foot in front of the other, repeating to myself, "I f***ed up, I f***ed up, I f***ed up, I f***ed up....". A couple of other guys who I had been in the water with earlier and were just getting ready to leave helped me peel off my wetsuit (Oh, I was in PAIN), insisting on calling 911, but I didn't want to leave my car and board, so I drove home the 30 miles. I pulled into my driveway and had to call my landlord to THEN call 911 as I was in too much pain get out of the car. I spent 4 days in the hospital and the doctor told me another half-inch up or down and I would have been paralyzed from the break down. He said I was lucky. After a bunch of physical rehab, 6 months later I was back in the water, crying tears of gratitude as I caught my first wave since the wipeout. But, oh, did I mention how sweet those tight little barrels were? I still mind-surf them.

Sounds like you got really lucky and I hope you've recovered. As expensive as 911 to the hospital is, it's nothing compared to your spine. Take back/neck injuries very seriously because it's better to pay money for an ambulance than it is to pay in quality of life when you lose the ability to surf again.
@PariahSojourner3 жыл бұрын
@@CounterFleche Thanks, yeah, I was very lucky. I did call 911 (well, my landlord did) when I got home. What's funny (at least I think), is that the few doctors I've had since then have taken a look at x-rays and MRI's of my back and think I should be bedridden in constant pain. When I tell them how active I am, heavy yard work, mountain biking, backpacking, etc. (I haven't surfed in 4 - 5 years because I now live deep in the Mojave), they freak out. I tell them that if I stop moving for a while that when my back hurts, so move I do. Besides my back, this old carcass is beat to shit from all the other hard-living I've had the pleasure of experiencing over my 57 years. :D If I lose the so-called "quality if life" because I pushed too hard, so be it. It'll just give me an opportunity to push back even harder. My life mantra: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” ~Hunter S. Thompson

Nobody listens to me but i will say it yet again, for the record. (Now it's in writing) Remember the gray little rolly polly bug? Roll into a ball. On EVERY wipeout. My worst surf injuries occurred when i was elongated. (All stretched out) You don't even need a helmet, if your arms are covering your head.
