Modern Pop dominates now but sucks big time for the most part. But there is hope, this decade I have listened to these female fronted Rock Bands and they kick butt. Try Halestorm, Lilac, Dorothy, Simply Reckless and Samantha Fish, these ladies and their awesome bands bring old school style with a modern feel for some real throw back rock that surprised this old hippie and made me smile to know someone can still sing like in the old days and play like the used to back in the day. The Mamas and the Papas are part of our glorious past, these musical players of the last decade have convinced me Rock, if not Pop, is in good hands going into the future. 🎸

Poor Brad always has to find the meaning of the song. So many of these artists in the late 60s early 70s don’t even know what their songs meant. Only thing that’s really important is what this song means to you. I’ve read many interviews from a lot of artist in this era and many can’t explain where the song came from. Some will even say the words came to them instantly. People like Bob Dylan would say he could write a song anywhere and many times it wasn’t up to him when the lyrics came to him.

@@raymondmanderville505 I wasn't talking about this song specifically. My point was not to slam Brad at all either. I personally love how he tries to figure out the meaning of each song. I was talking about some of the artist from that era in general. Yes for sure some songs have a specific meaning that the artist wanted the listener to grasp. In many other cases from this era the great song writers had no idea where the inspiration came from or even what the true meaning of the song was. If they do have a specific meaning many artist would rarely share with the audience. That is why I mention Dylan above, many many many times he was interviewed and said he had no idea what a song was suppose to mean or where the inspiration came from. John Fogerty kept a small notebook with song titles even before he wrote the song or knew what song would fit each title. I think we can agree we don't have the same overall brilliance in song writing today as was on display in this era. Unless the artist actually tells us what the song is about it is completely up to the listener to interpret the meaning and enjoy the song.

The haunting magic comes at 4:30 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.

This is how my siblings and I learnt how to sing harmony as children, we were taught to sing all our nursery rhymes in 4 part delayed harmony, it was a fun way to develop a good ear for music as a young child.

Yeah, not to be mean but I could see Brad being on the Spectrum for his specific comments and rigid analysis of lyrics, always. It isn’t a bad thing at all, as it helps him in being analytical for his other favourite things he has in his life. He just doesn’t like “clutter” whether noise or anything else. The girls are doing what is known to back-up singers as a "callback" which means they say exactly the same lyrics As the lead singer immediately after the lead singer says the lyrics Example: Lead singer (bar -one) "I got down on my knees". Backup singers,( bar -two) "I got down on my knees". The part Lex is talking about at the end of the song is known as "Molto Allegro" I am loven the reaction videos.

Also, please react to the guitarist that Hendrix claimed was the best in the world - Ireland's Rory Gallagher "I'm Not Awake Yet". To clarify - Jimi was in London in the late 60's and was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world... to which he replied, "Ask Rory Gallagher". In 1965 when California Dreaming came out my sister and I sang it at the school talent contest. We were good but only got 2nd place due to Lennie Furman's and his stupid ventriloquist act. We should have won because the dummy did most of the work.

Interesting reactions. Just had to smile at Brad's face throughout, his expression made me think of when we tried to introduce our toddler to new foods, now he's open to just about anything. Just like your taste buds change, a wide variety of music can eventually be appreciated too, Brad will get there. Lex is much more open, maybe due to already being a bit more acclimatised to earlier eras. It's tricky starting from a narrower view of music, you have no context for the historical progression and what was so ground breaking in each era, it moved so fast through the 50's right up to the 80's. Though, for me, something was sadly lost since the era of digital recording technology grew, with it somehow song writing and musicianship also took a dive when everybody thought they could do it, and with very little inspiration or effort. The music became generally repetitive, derivative and recycled and lost it's soul. Individualism or variety is not how I would describe modern music, everyone seems to be using the same beats and the same sampled sounds, then anything that might be unique in their voices is auto tuned to hell.

The problem with today's music is in part most songs have the same 3 or 4 chords playing the same beat. Voices are in large part auto tuned, they don't use real drums but use drum machines. They no longer play by feel but are matched to a click so there is no feel. There are not a lot of real harmonies because the lead singer does there own harmony and backup vocals. It's just to hamoginized.

Both of you guys are so right on with your analysis. There are lots of reasons why modern popular music, and I always stress the word "popular", just can't compare to the artistic quality and inspiration that the music of the late 50's through to the early 90's had and you both hit on several of them. Hip hop, rap, Disney-fication and TV talent shows have just killed what popular music once was and once meant. The sorry excuse we always hear that if you just dig harder you'll find good stuff might be true, but with the advent of affordable home digital studios now means that everybody and their dog has put out their stuff out there. There was plenty of junk in the old days when you had to work your whole life to get a record deal, now we're totally overwhelmed with it. This is what you get when everybody thinks music ought to be free. You end up getting what you pay for.

Hi again guys…another recommendation…Disturbed’s version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”. Disturbed is a heavy metal band with a singer that has an angelic voice. The S&G version of the song is from the 60’s and is a classic. The Disturbed cover (live on Conan) is the best cover I have ever heard. Here is one more Rammstein “Du Hast” in Paris Director’s Cut. Rammstein is a German industrial metal band. They sing in German only. It is a live performance in an arena. But if you want to see a sight you need to see this video! Another modern day classic!

I was born in 1944. Yep, these were good old days on one hand but I was drafted into the Army and ended up a disabled retired veteran from Vietnam in 1968. Good, bad, and ugly days all rolled into one. Such is life.

John Phillips said this song was written in a hotel in New York on a very cold winter day. It was about Michelle because she was a California girl & this was there first time up in New York & it began to snow. Michelle who had lived in California her whole life, had never seen snow before and apparently it made her homesick. Then the idea for California Dreaming was born. This story is in the inner sleeve of the Creeque Alley album.
