The haunting magic comes at 4:30 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.

This song was composed in the early 60s by John (tall guy with the guitar) and Michelle Phillips (woman on the left), husband and wife. The were in NYC in the winter playing some other gig (before the Mama's and Papa's was formed), and it started to snow. Being from L.A., Michelle had never seen snow, so they went for a walk. Not realizing how cold it was, they "stopped into a church [they] passed along the way", for the sole reason of getting warm. Needing a reason for entering the church, they "got down on [their] knees and...pretend to pray". When they returned to their apartment, they wrote the song together. When they returned to L.A., they gave the song to Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction") in 1963, but his version never took off. Later, when they formed the M and P's, they released the song as a single from their first album in 1965. The song shot to the top of the charts, and the rest is history. If you haven't already done so, you might react to Angelina's version of this classic pop song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3OsaH6jaN9qY7c It is an Absolute MASTERPIECE!!! The fat girl in the group is not just a backup singer, she is easily the best singer in the group. When the group broke up she began what was a very successful solo career. On July 24, 1974, “Mama Cass” Elliot, one of the most memorable and charismatic members of the Los Angeles-based folk rock group The Mamas & the Papas, died in her sleep in a London apartment at the age of 32. It was the death heard about 'round the world, or at least around California.

@@george217 That's the same asshole, George. And while there are many accounts of John's assholeness (is that a word? well it should be), Mackenzie Phillip's (not Michelle's biological daughter) book was published after his death, so he was never afforded the opportunity to defend himself. And instead of causing John defamation while he was alive, she ended up hurting many family members who were left to deal with the public persecution. What a mess!

A little insight into why "The Mamas and the Papas" - you got the groovy part of this, and this was very much the days of the Hippies Mamas and papas were how hippies referred to women and men, not just mothers and fathers Great reaction. This song was one of the top hits of 1966. The follow-up hit they released was "Monday Monday," which is also worth a listen. As for the whole "Mamas and Papas" thing, you might be surprised to learn of a group called Wilson-Phillips, which is comprised of three women -- Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Carnie Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas. Wilson Phillips broke big in the '90s with a couple of amazing albums. Check out their covers of these songs by their parents, "California Dreamin'," "Good Vibrations," "Monday Monday," "Dance Dance Dance," "Twelve Thirty," "Don't Worry Baby," "Dedicated to the One I Love," "God Only Knows," and a few others like, "California," and their breakout hit, "Hold On." These three women came from such amazingly harmonic lineage, it's not surprising that their music is steeped in beautiful harmonies. I know you'd dig 'em. And then you'd know what these Mamas and Papas (and Brian Wilson and his wife) created.

Probably out in 66 or 67. Short lived group but many hit songs. Very successful in less than 3 years. Denny Doherty in a vest singing was a great singer Mama Cass had success as a solo artist also. Many timeless very good songs

The blonde female, Michelle Phillips, went on to have a supporting role on the TV series Knots Landing; and more recently has acted on several Hallmark Christmas movies. The shorter dark haired guy, John Phillips--married to Michelle-- is the father of Makenzie Phillips from One Day at a Time TV show. Michelle is Makenzei'e step mom.

John Phillips in the blue shirt started the band. His wife is the blonde her name is Michelle. They were in NYC hating the weather being from LA. The church in question is St Patrick’s Cathedral, Michelle went inside and John waited outside. John and Michelle wrote the song together.

Well, now they're old enough to be your great grandparents. Three of them have passed away. you guys are SO much fun to watch!! (my fave is reaction-to-silence-of-the-lambs...scared ME). you DON'T interrupt alot with needless comments...thanks. also, her laugh is fantastic and real, and will make you smile. and he is about as handsome & smart, as it can get. both are reserved just enough, and listen to each other intently, and with a quiet chemistry between them. they remind me of two african american teachers in 1971 in Minneapolis, ,who had just started teaching, as we were just starting high school, 9th grade She was my gorgeous and patient typing teacher that I adored. And he was the no-nonsense PE teacher (and history teacher) that was really cute, but very strict & serious. which made him all the hotter. I recall that she had moved there from St Louis, and he was from Chicago. They were married by the end of my senior year, 4 yrs later !! Thanks again for the fun intelligent entertainment !!

Apparently. the story is that they came back from a vacation to the Bahamas after beginning to experience a little success in New York's Greenwich Village "folk revival scene" of the first half of the 1960s to discover all the artists they knew there had been signed to record company contracts and moved to L.A. where the industry had moved to, and Michelle Phillips (the thin blonde one) tells John Phillips (soon to be her husband) that "it's too cold here, we need to move to L.A. with everyone else." Which they did, and where they recorded this GIANT hit (and others) for themselves. Supposedly, the lyrics are very nearly a transcription of what she said to him when they got back to NY in the winter of 1965 to find themselves cold and alone, with everyone else having gone.

Composed by John & Michelle Phillips in the winter of '64 when they were in NYC, suffering with the cold. They joined forces with Cass Elliott & tenor lead voice Denny Doherty, to form the group. They had no name, but came up with what they did as they signed their record contract.. December of '64, January of '65, this was what was called back then : Folk-Rock. -----------MJL< 75 y/o
