After a show at MASS MoCA, where some of her visual art was on display, my wife and I had the privilege of meeting her. She was the embodiment of the cliche of a celebrity who is very nice and down-to-earth when you get a chance to talk to them. I said that I always think of her in relation to her wife, because my wife's maiden name is Hines. She replied that in northern England, that's how they pronounce her name. At risk of falling into another cliche, she's much prettier in person than you might think from photographs and concert videos.

This song is about transitioning to middle age...the middle of life's road & realizing that there are new priorities in life. It's from the LP Learning To Crawl, which came out in 1984 & was being recorded after she had her first child. Great overall LP...not a bad song on it. My favorite Pretenders LP!

But there is sociopath-political commentary mixed. “As long as you don’t try dragging my bay or dropping a bomb on my street”. “But when you own a big chunk of the bloody third world, the babies just come with the scenery”

Exactly! I LOVED this song when it came out because, much like Lex noted early on, it's so different. It was different than anything else on the radio at that time. Bought the album on cassette and just about wore it out. Chrissie Hynde's voice is so deep for a woman's and the guitar parts in this song just rock. And that section of this song that has the guitars playing in thirds from each other while he counts in the background has always reminded me of the Allman Brothers' sound. This is a great driving song!

I really love this song. One correction, though. "Middle of the road" refers to moderate political tendencies, so while it's definitely a song about getting older and having different priorities, the metaphor has a distinct, specific connotation - i.e., that you just don't have time and energy to devote to all the pie-in-the-sky causes of your youth. This is explicit in lines like "...smile for everyone I meet.../...dragging my bay or dropping the bomb on my street." The idea here is "I'm just trying to get through life, so don't adopt any policies that affect me personally and we'll be fine." In other words, NIMBYism. I think, by the way, that there's a sneering, sarcastic tone to Hynde's delivery that makes me wonder whether she's reluctantly embracing this approach to life (or at least acknowledging its appeal) or mocking those who do. So you're right in a sense, but the "road" is not life. It's about being a middle-of-the-road, disengaged sellout.

Chrissie Hynde was one of a kind. She was an American in England hanging out with all of the future famous punk rockers, Sex Pistols, etc., and ended up forming her own band and creating her own unique sound. This album came out in 1979. Pretenders were big throughout the first half of the 80s. I believe a couple original band members died.

Yeah,to drugs, sadly James Honeyman Scott, the original guitarist and bassist Pete Farndon were taken far too soon. Farndon had actually been tossed out of the band shortly before he died, because his addiction had just gone too far. Those first two albums, with the original foursome, were stellar. I liked some of the stuff that followed, especially the Learning To Crawl album, which this track,Back On The Chain Gang,My City Was Gone and Show Me,were off of. But to me,the true Pretenders band died with Jimmy and Pete.

My favourite Pretenders song is "Don't Get Me Wrong"; other great ones are "Brass In Pocket", "Back on the Chain Gang", and the Christmas song "2000 Miles". Chrissie Hynde is one of the baddest songwriters ever when she feels it. The first half of the Pretenders’ first album is one of the best punk records ever. Then for the other half she wrote great country-folk, reggae, torch ballad, new wavish pub rock, and pop (which was a huge hit and is to this day). Plus she can really tug at your heart strings when she sings a slow one. She is more the hitchhiker LOL. She wrote a song called “Biker” (as in “You bring out the biker in me”) and 3 songs about S&M.

Rush Limbaugh liked it too and used it on his radio show for years. When he first started using it, the band (Pretenders) objected to it. But Chrissie Hynde's father was an avid listener of Rush Limbaugh, and though she disagreed with his politics, she felt very strongly that people should have freedom of thought and expression. And also she felt that it was a great tribute to her father (who I think might have been passed away at the time). So it was Chrissie herself who granted Rush Limbaugh the use of the song.

For the full monty, check out: "Precious", "Up The Neck", "The Wait", "Message Of Love", "Porcelain", "Talk of the Town", "Pack It Up" and "Tattooed Love Boys". Chrissie is one of the greatest female rockers of all time and wrote or co-wrote ALL of the Pretenders songs. Seeing her live in the early 80's, there was nothing sexier on stage then Chrissie slashing at her guitar or staring out at the audience but refusing to make eye contact, making you try that much harder to get her attention. Precious, My City Was Gone, Message of Love. Chrissie Hynde's led an interesting life, you should check out her autobiography. Was at Kent State when National Guard shot the kids, moved to England and wrote music reviews, was friends and acquaintances with lots of the English punks, good friends with Lemmy from Motorhead who helped find her guitarist (or drummer?), had a couple of her band members die from drugs ... and that was just the early part of her life. I'm so happy y'all did The Pretenders. They were such an important band. They came out in the very late 70s when I was in high school and I immediately fell in love. It's hard to pin their sound down, it kind of came out of Post Punk and into New Wave but it's still basically rock and I don't know. Same with her voice, she has her own sound. I got to see them live when I was about 20 years old and that band is so tight and fun but I tell you what, Chrissie Hynde is a force of nature. She is so slinky and sexy and tongue-in-cheek and hip but she's also tough and can really handle herself. I liked Brad's description also of a combination of ballsy and carefree but also there is always that darkness like Lex alluded to. This is one of their slow ones but it was a huge hit and I've seen many live clips of it including an awesome one of them in rehearsal, where she smoking a cigarette while she's singing and moving her body and it's great. Each live performance of this is just a little bit different from the other. I'm not sure what this television spot is from, but it's fairly early on as the hit was breaking and it gives you at least a look at how they were live. Although keep in mind she would also strap on a guitar and play some almost more post-punk type stuff with them as well. Brass in Pocket. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fX20g42dm6aGr8U

Chrissie Hynde, along with Drummer Martin Chambers, the two surviving original members of The Pretenders, have had a long, successful and esoteric careers. Chrissie was even involved with Ray Davies of The Kinks and covered his song "Stop All Your Sobbing", which you should check out. Bassist Pete Farndon and Lead Guitarist James "Honeyman" Scott, the other two originals, both passed from drug OD's soon after the band finally hit it big. A slight pause, and then Chrissie and Martin were back at it, with new folks. The show must go on.

This is pop punk, from the late 70's - there was a Beatles song that went "why don't we do it in the road? No one will be watching us, why don';t we do it in the road" - So this is a play on that song, a little bit -- but also, it's about becoming less of a wild spirit after one gets a certain age, when there's a kid to raise, a mortgage to pay - nobody can be wild and crazy under those circumstances -- at the same time, one has become aware enough to realize that life is full of cruel injustice - but in the end, we all are concerned that we are safe and secure and comfortable -- and the rebel in Chrissie Hynde is reacting with cynicism and anger against her own creeping complacency. You might go back to their first album and try something like Mystery Achievement or (to get as wild as possible) try Tattooed Love Boys, where she investigates a gay sex club and gets pulled into the action

Love this solo. It's more about reaching "middle age" and feeling like nobody is paying attention to your message and you're just tired. Don't let the lyric video images misguide you. You should check out some earlier Pretenders. "Brass in Pocket" brings back special memories for me.

Talk of the Town is my favorite Pretenders song. James Honeyman-Scott was one of the underrated guitar players. He had passed away at this point, so had Pete Farndon. This was the second incarnation of the band.

When we say Chrissie is bad ass, think like..Joan Jett, this lady is a no nonsense hardcore rocker, bad ass chick and that's exactly the vibe of many of their songs. Her voice is powerful, yet sultry. The whole band are beast and I would really love to see The Pretenders get some more reactor love because they were a huge part of the 80s music scene. They popped up late 70s and had hit after hit all through the 80s, but they were never doing the new wave thing. They were simply a great rock band with a female lead.

Their third album. First album is a mix of pop and rock (brass in the pocket, kid, tattooed love boys, precious, stop your sobbing). Second album more pop oriented (message of love, talk of the town). Third album also has back on the chain gang, as well as my city was gone. Chrissie (it’s her band) has trended more to pop in their more recent (4) albums

please give this band other reaction videos, Precious is amazing, bad boys get spanked is amazing. you definitely want to check out anything from the first 2 records. Chrissie has been around for quite awhile and holds her own when it comes to the boys in the band. strong, powerful, amazing singer\songwriter, performer and guitar player. she is also one hell of an artist. check out her works of art by googling her.

I loved My City Was Gone and other Pretender's songs mentioned below. I'd say they had a 60s beat with 80s sound. And Chrissie Hinds voice added so much to their distinctive sound.

This is from the 1983 album Learning to Crawl. The album also has the song Back on the Chain Gang, which got me into the Pretenders in the first place. I used to play this album all the time...every single song on it is great!! Check out Back on the Chain Gang, also 2000 Miles and My City Was Gone.

Thanks for this reaction! The Pretenders are one of my top 10-15 ATF bands. Chrissie Hynde is just a tremendous and unique talent. They've got soo many awesome hits too, too many to count. "Back on the Chain Gang", as others have said "Brass in Pocket" and "Mystery Achievement", and probably my all time favorite, "Talk of the Town". Any of these would be good, among others.

I LOVE so much that y'all dive deep in the oldies vault and react to alot of songs no one else finds on here. Keep it up because only us from the 70's and 80's remember these truly lost treasures. I have noticed you Lex get into the music and beat, Brad concentrates on the lyrics..lol.

Chrissie Hynde was super-talented...not only did she sing, but she also played rhythm guitar on most of their tracks, as well as that outro solo harmonica. Several songs I'd recommend highly include Back On The Chain Gang, Brass In Pocket, Creep, and Talk Of The Town. Try to get live versions of their songs, where you get to see Chrissie performing; She's also hot as hell, and I've had a crush on her for about 45 years now. 😍 I'm enjoying your reaction (seen a few), and this one tipped me into subscribing! Thanks so much, and keep enjoying yourselves!

Chrissie Hynde is a pretty lady and was a great musician, singer, guitarist. They were a great group with many hit songs and videos. Late '70s, '80s and little bit of the '90s. Considered alternative rock, jangle pop, a little new wave, punk ish rock back in the late '70s an '80s. Dig more into their music, lots of great songs to list! The group had good looks and swag/coolness factor.

One of the greatest humans, Chrissie will make you happy you are human with her don't take shit from anyone attitude and willing to take the lumps and bumps for having such. While there isn't many, if any, bad Pretender songs, the video that will get you clued in to how this band and that front woman connected across genres and generations is the live recording with The Pretenders - Middle Of The Road ft. Iggy Pop, Shirley Manson, Kings of Leon, Incubus...awesome live show
