I am an American. I spent two weeks in Honduras in Central America and one night I was hanging out with some locals. A young man pulled out an old beat up guitar and strted playing Dream On perfectly. He did not know how to pronounce the English lyrics - so I started singing. A HUGE crowd gathered in a mountain village of Honduras as we - two strangers - connected through this beautiful song. It was sublime.

I love Lex's comparison to an alarm clock at the end of the song. I'm not sure if that's what Aerosmith intended, but it makes perfect sense. Music can speak without words and Lex has a great talent picking up on things like that. Glad you both enjoyed this classic.

I agree, she's quite intuitive and she often quickly recognizes what a producer was trying to do by approaching something this way or that. And as for this example, things like that are generally intentional, and I seem to remember Tyler saying at the time it was released that it was an alarm. Regardless, most other artists I know learned over time that that the difference between so-called good and bad artists isn't how much talent they might have inside them, but how many ways they find to let it out. That creative choice to end the song that way is the kind of next-level layer of meaning that a less experienced band or producer misses as an opportunity. It's what makes the great people so great--they are doing so much more--and it's also why every one of us always has room to grow.

Right with you there. I "like" Aerosmith but never really got into them, but this song has great power and meaning - that may be it too - many of their songs are superficial and shallow about sex, drugs and rock n roll and that's all well and good, but there's not much to sink you teeth into. This one just hits different. Also his singing is more subdued and you hear more of his range instead of the constant high, head screams he is famous for. Here, he only uses his scream to accentuate at the end and I think (and Lex certainly agrees!) that makes the switch to the high, power scream much more impactful.

Insightful reaction, guys! A quick little story...Aerosmith played a fund raising concert for my fledgling private elementary school, and my pops was involved in the booking. It was 1974 for the tour of their second album "Get Your Wings." Some of my mates and myself got to go backstage and greet them before the show. They couldn't have been nicer; especially Steven Tyler who gave us high fives and a minute or two of small talk. Then watched them from up front. This song came out in 1973 both on the album at 4:26 long which is what you did (the good one) and a single that was shortened to 3:25 for radio stations that often resisted anything over 3:30 long. I listened to and liked it for years before finding out it was Aerosmith. Today I could just search the Net and find out all about the song and the group and every member of the group. But then, if the DJ didn't tell us very clearly before and after, we wouldn't know. The neat thing about your reaction is that even now, after my listening to it these many years, I'm getting more out of it because of you. Lexi's observation that (almost) the whole thing sounds like an intro put words to my feelings about it building tension all through. And her thinking about the ending - "Time's up!" - was perfect. And as you both said, how unusual it is, is exactly why I love this song and why it never feels dated.

Janie's Got a Gun would be a great Aerosmith choice. Amazing vocals, harmonies, and instrumentals. Plus, the song and video tells the same story! It's one of their biggests hits, and it's about an intense subject.

I'm always happy when i see you're doing a reaction to a band / song i love. I've been listening to this song since i was a little boy. I always loved it and still do. It's fun to see young, smart people react to it. Thanks.

Steven Tyler wrote this song in high school during one of his classes

WHAT??!! I've been listening to this song since I was in high school (late '80's) and..... I NEVER knew Steven wrote this as a teenager himself!!! That's a hell of a lot of wisdom for a teen!! I've loved him(and Aerosmith) for years..... that just upped the "IT" factor a notch for me!!! Thanks for the info!! Peace... :)

@@NoKingsNoGodsOnlyMan 😂🤣😂 From what I remember, Steven had hard lines on his face even back in the 80's.... pretty sure that's what happens when you're coked-up 24/7 and you're straining to see things clearly every minute of everyday!! 😉😅😁

SIDE NOTE: The greatness and power of Steven's voice reminded me of something.... you NEED to check this song out.... "HUNGER STRIKE" by Temple of The Dog..... (a one-time collab in tribute to Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone. More on that when you do HUNGER STRIKE! 😉😁) *** it's Chris Cornell (SOUNDGARDEN and later AUDIOSLAVE) and Eddie Vedder (of PEARL JAM) .... TOGETHER!!!! 🤗 It's where the members of PEARL JAM met and became PJ!!!😍😎 and Chris and Eddie's voices together is ethereal!! Brad will LOVE it for sure!!! 😉🤩

Not exactly where members of Pearl Jam met. Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard & Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament were previously in Green River and Mother Love Bone together. They along with Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready were rehearsing with Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell & Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron (later he joined Pearl Jam - late 90's), for Temple Of The Dog. Eddie Vedder came to audition for Pearl Jam and was at the rehearsal. Cornell was still working out vocals to Hunger Strike and Eddie Vedder stepped in and sang what he sang because it seemed Cornell was struggling with it but it turned out to be what Cornell was looking for and it turned into a duet.

@@mikenastasi8927 Dude.... I am WELL aware of who, what, how, when etc., PJ was formed, how Eddie ended up on the track for "HUNGER STRIKE" etc..... the words you just wrote are MY WORDS (in a nutshell) from my comments on several other reactions done on Hunger Strike. It was just a brief summation of what/who were involved in the TEMPLE OF THE DOG album. No need to go any deeper til they do Hunger Strike. Just saying..... Pearl Jam, Soundgarden/Chris Cornell, Temple Of The Dog etc., are my boys and have been my "jam" since I was 19..... it's been close 30 years now.... That info you just wrote came from ME and one of several of MY comments that I've left elsewhere in an effort to share it with others who may enjoy knowing about it. Just saying... However, what happened was.... Chris Cornell was in the studio with Matt Cameron (Soundgarden), Stone Gossard (Mother Love Bone), Jeff Ament (Mother Love Bone) and Mike McCready (fill-in occasionally for The Screaming Trees) trying to record "HUNGER STRIKE" Now, Stone and Jeff had flown Eddie Vedder up to meet and audition for them after Andrew Wood's death...... Chris Cornell said they were in the studio recording Hunger Strike and he was pissed. To quote him he said "I was struggling to get my voice to sound the way I was hearing it in my head. And then this guy ED got up and quietly, but with some BALLS, walked over to the mic and started singing! I liked it, we did a few run throughs and the rest is history"...... So, from that one moment of Eddie just walking up and singing all on his own..... Stone and Jeff knew they'd found their new lead singer. Eddie and the guys spent the next couple months hanging and jamming with each other and Pearl Jam's ICONIC "TEN" album was release 8 months later!! Amazing and I like to think that Andrew Wood played some role in bring Eddie and the guys of PJ together!! ;) Peace brother....

@@tinagilbert8902 I didn't read your comments on other posts. I only read what you posted here, which was that it's where they met. I merely added some info in case you didn't know because you seemed a little misinformed. I wasn't being condescending, was trying to help. I've been a fan too for 30 yrs, so that's cool. Did you get to see them live? I never got to see Soundgarden or Audioslave but got to see Temple Of The Dog at Madison Square Garden in 2016 on their 25th Anniversary tour (1 of 7 shows they did). Who'd know Cornell would die like 6 months later. So sad. They did the whole Temple Of The Dog album, a lot of Mother Love Bone, and covers. Close to 30 songs. If you saw that tour, where did you see them?

Such a classic, love their early albums. Steven's voice sounds so much like Freddie Mercury in this song.

It took a whilefor the song to become a hit. Steven Tyler wrote it when he was a teenager, before Aerosmith existed. It was released as a single off their first album in 1973, but stalled at 59 on the pop charts. Two years later, their third album ("Toys in the Attic", which had "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion" on it) had taken off commercially. Late that year, the label re-released it and it became their first Top 10 hit almost three years after its first release (and almost a decade after it was written).
